I can't see this happening, because with Skype, Vonage, and Fring, plus 3G access, the iPod Touch becomes a telephone that makes Apple far less money each month than an iPhone. I don't think they care as much about the iPad having 3G access because no one's going to hold an iPad up to their head to make a call. But it would be unwise for Apple to allow the Touch to function as a phone when not on a Wi-Fi network.

Perhaps you're right, but I just have a hunch they'll add 3G capability. If you're able to make Skype/Vonage/Fring calls over wifi, is it that much of a difference adding 3G into the mix (and charging a data plan for all those new users)?

And don't you think most iPhone users want to keep their regular and reliable voice plans? I think it's a small crowd who would switch to VoiP calls only. Hmm, it would make for an interesting poll here on MacRumors.

The iPad isn't so bad for making calls. One way I do it is put on headphones and then speak into the top of the device (where the microphone is). It's not so awkward that way, but yes you wouldn't want to walk around all day making calls on it.

It might be, i dont see why not other than iPad sales which they might think it'll decrease.

I think Apple will hold the keynote on September 8th this year, and will make some awesome changes to the iPod touch.

  • $199 - 16GB 3rd Generation
  • $299 - 32GB 4th Generation
  • $399 - 64GB 4th Generation

4th Generation will include (IMHO):
  • Either a new iPad-like aluminum-backed design or the same polished steel design
  • Retina Display (960x640)
  • A4 Processor
  • 512MB RAM
  • 802.11n WiFi
  • Gyroscope
  • 3.2MP back-facing camera w/ video recording (same as 3GS)
  • Microphone
  • iOS 4 (4.1?)

I dont think they'll have a new 3G.

Huh? I don't think they'll add anything to the 3rd Gen, but right now the lowest end model ($199) is a previous-generation (2G) and I think in September they will make the current 3rd Gen 16GB and keep it as the $199 model.

I know that. If they're going to do that then they should have a 8GB 4th gen for the same price... which obviously they will if they dont have a a higher baseline model. So i dont know why i just said that. ;)

meh, I won't lie, I would much rather have the extra memory than the new gadgetry. 8 gigs is a bit small, and I don't even have all my stuff on it, and I think the jump from 8 to 32 gigs is kinda ridiculous. I would personally get a 32 gig, because my library has surpassed the 16GB mark as well, but I think the 16 gig slightly older version would sell better.

I would use no where near that much, but i'm afraid that if i get the 8gb i'll surpass it somehow. Even though i'll probably only have like 2gbs of music ON THERE. I'll probably have a gb of video AT MOST. And then im afraid that apps will take up the rest but i doubt they will. I dont think my apps will take up like 4gb worth of space.

Naaaa all of the new hardware (Retina Display, camera, etc.) would cost too much to put it in the $199 model. And 8GB is too low of a capacity when flash storage is so cheap now. I think they'll keep their current example by having a last-generation model in the $199 place w/ 16GBs. We'll see.

I think if anything they should have something somewhat 4G, maybe no retina as the baseline for 199. But i guess we'll all see.

I don't know about that. But it's Apple. Anythings possible.

That would be hilarious seeing someone walking around a store or something with the iPad to their ear like a cell phone. :D Not to be mean or anything.

Im going to report this because there already is such a type of thread.

This thread has been going for over two weeks. There seem to be more recent threads that might be more deserving to be closed. A thread with this identical title was already closed earlier today.

Really?!? When did you get here?

Anyways, we need another poll: What is the name gonna be? A. Ipod Touch 4 B. Ipad Mini C. Itouch D. IpodHD

I vote B. Ipad Mini

Well, actually, technology companies everywhere have priced the whole iPhone 4 and its hardware at a little under $150, with the most expensive piece being the retina display for $28.50. It's just the typical "pay less, price more" mindset. So if they priced a 4th gen 8/16GB iPod touch at $229 like it used to be, they'd still make 70 dollars a pop, not to mention the 32 ($299) and 64GB ($399) models that people are more favorable of. Also, the only reason Apple put a 2nd gen at the baseline of 3rd gen is cause they look the same.

You guys

alright, some of u guys are being somewhat idiotic.

first of all (and yes we have this argument every year after the iphone is announced and the ipod is about to be refreshed) history and logic dictate;

The ipod will never have all of the features of the iphone without the phone bit. FULL STOP (not unless they charge £500 for it)

the design will become standardised across the line (ipods) the iphone will remain with a design of its own, this reaffirms that it is unique and an industry leader (as opposed to an ipod touch with a phone chip in it)

the camera will focus on entertainment instead of quality and functionality- expect the iphone 3gs camera chips. no forward facing camera, no 720p video.

RE; Retina display, for me, as the screens will already be there for apple to use, maybe. but this could go either way.

no GPS no Compass maybe Gyro.

as for the 16GB (r u crazy) how would that fit into a pricing lineup - would you pay the same for half the memory with slightly better features or create a new size range.
the memory capacities will stay the same this year, 32 and 64 the higher capacity chips are still too expensive.

remember guys, just because you want to have the iphone 4 without a chip really cheap. dont mean yer gonna get it.

ok thats me, apologies for spelling and grammar.

I thought the same thing when I got an 8gb 2nd gen. 940 songs, and 116 apps later, I have 634mb left on it.

I recently bought a 32gb 3rd gen off Woot.com for $234, and couldn't be happier.

I will most likely by the 4th gen if it has a camera, but not until Feb (tax return season! LOL

Seriously, who would close this? It's the most popular thread on this subject and this is the first thread SPECIFICALLY about the ipod touch 4G. There's one about when its going to get a camera, but thats it.

Just cause you report it doesnt mean theyre going to close it.

I'll try.

{Edit} I cant have more than two polls on one thread.

Please rate the thread!!!

I don't like negative comments.
16gb for $149. It's as simple as that.
