Apple is really pushing the Facetime thing, but nobody can use it, because at the moment both people must have an iPhone to Facetime. Apple must have a plan for making Facetime a real selling point, and the only way to do this is if there are actually enough people with Facetime devices.

This is why I think the next touch will have Facetime (i.e. front camera), because this would add many more opportunities to use Facetime, plus it would be a huge selling point. People who wouldn't buy the iPhone would be really tempted to get the touch just for Facetime. At least, I would be tempted...

Last, of the two cameras, the front lower resolution camera would be cheaper to add on. But i think it would be nice of them to put both :)

I just don't know why Apple would bother pushing Facetime for iPod touch. The iPhone is a communications device, such that such a feature would be a big selling point. The iPod touch is not a communications device. It is for fun & games. A rear camera for taking pictures videos falls right in line with that.

Front camera and Facetime starts to encroach more into iPhone's communications market segment.

Considering the iPod touch does everything an iPhone can do besides make calls with AT&T, it's foolish to say it isn't a communications device. Just because Apple markets it as a gaming device doesn't mean they want to make a gaming device. Apple doesn't make it a gaming device, the apps do. They market it that way because that's what studies have shown are popular on the device. The iPod Touch has apps to make phone calls without AT&T (skype, fring). The design and purpose behind the iPod Touch will remain in line with the iPhone. It won't veer off into a unique gaming device category just because it is marketed as one.

With that said, I would much rather have an HD camera than a Facetime front facing camera (if we can't have both). I would use a regular camera for taking pictures/videos far more than I would use it for video-chatting.

Of course, one of the bells and whistles we will never see on a Touch is a phone. I am still wondering if we are getting our hopes too high for an updated iPod Touch this September. Has the resources at Apple been been spread too thin to come up with a major upgrade, with the iPad and the new iPhone? I hope not, but throwing that out there for consideration.
I'm pretty sure the phone and GPS and whatever else the iPhone has that iPod Touch doenst helps in the cost of the iPhone. It most definitely would be stupid not to release it in September because, as mention before, they would miss a Christmas which is a HUGE selling point.
It's actually better to have a front facing camera. I mean, it'd be nice to have a back facing for pictures you can actually see, but Apple is only putting one camera on this thing, and there's no way in Hell they're selling 10 million iPhone's by the end of this year unless that price drops like pants without a belt. But, it's either gonna be 2MP or 3.2MP, so don't get your hopes up for 5MP with flash. VGA would make me NOT buy it.
I think if a camera is going to be on the ipod touch they will have the back one before.

I like that expression. :)

I HATE VGA cameras.
It looks like all the retailers are gearing up for something new from Apple for the iPod Touch. There are some good pricing on them right now.
Them?

I am stuck with which camera will have a higher res. I think it will be the same, cause a higher res for the "front camera" would mean more use, most likely, but you're most likely going to use the "back camera" more, so im stuck.

I can't believe how Jobs has brainwashed you all into pathetic specs. 64gig is an absolute travesty in this day and age, especially for a so-called media device which is a so-called industry leader. Have a little dose of reality. Apps + Music + MOVIES needs more than 64 gig to be worth anything. Otherwise for the priviledge of Jobs screwing you, you get some kludgy device you have to continually swap stuff with like its your second job. Some of us have lives.

There's a media player device that has more than 64GB of flash storage? I'm well aware of hard drive based devices, but nothing with flash.

I guess, but like everyone's saying, he promised 10's of million FaceTime devices. Also, giving it to touch would broaden the limited horizon of FT users. No one's gonna be thinking "OH HEY, leme go buy a 300/600 dollar iPhone and call one of my friends on FaceTime!" if they have a 200 dollar touch that could do the same, ultimately resulting in MORE money made. Or, Apple could just be Apple and leave us with a cheap back camera, no camera at all, or make a whole new device in the Apple line (iFace or some crap) and sell THAT accompanied with the iPhone.

It is able to communicate, but that is not its primary function. I am speaking of market segment, which Apple is pretty clear on. There are now four legs to Apple: Mac (PC), iPhone (smart phone), iPod (mp3 and fun) and iPad (tablet). iPod touch is in the iPod category, which is for fun. I argue that its purpose is in line the iPod fun category, although you are right its design is more like an iPhone. What I am saying is not the touch veering into a new category, but remaining in the category it is in.

I could be wrong - they might include Facetime, but I think product segmentation suggests a rear camera comes before the front camera. Steve Jobs comment about Facetime does suggest the latter. We'll just have to see.

I'm in the same camp as you - I'd rather have the HD rear camera from iPhone 4, but I expect it will be the iPhone 3GS camera. The HD rear camera would make a killer iPod touch, but Apple always cuts back on features seemingly purely for product differentiation.

I understand that people can need more than 64gb. But i still think thats ridiculous.

...is referring to the different models of iPod Touches. All three models are being sold at a discount at many major etailers like Amazon, Walmart, and Best Buy.
Wasnt sure.

iPod Touch 4G?

3-5 MP Camera
Retina Display
All iOS 4.0 functions including iMovie support
A4 chip
Bigger Battery
Volume Buttons, Power get updated to something better like on the iPhone 4
Maybe FaceTime but very unlikely
Design will be similar not a radical re-design.

Same day the iPod Touch 4G is announced iTunes Cloud will be announce w/ Wireless Syncing for all 4.0 devices.

I didnt read the post completely the first time, but it kinda already has wifi. ;)

No, I mean a separate device with wifi AND 3G, just like they did with the iPad. You can choose wifi only or wifi+3G. Get it? :)

I seem to be the only person who thinks wifi+3g is coming to the Touch.

I can't see this happening, because with Skype, Vonage, and Fring, plus 3G access, the iPod Touch becomes a telephone that makes Apple far less money each month than an iPhone. I don't think they care as much about the iPad having 3G access because no one's going to hold an iPad up to their head to make a call. But it would be unwise for Apple to allow the Touch to function as a phone when not on a Wi-Fi network.

I was just reviewing the new iPhone's innovations. I think a lot of these iPhone innovations definetly rub off on the Ipod Touch 4G. Such as:

Camera, definetly
Maybe facetime
Multi Tasking
Better Res, maybe not HD, but better
App Folders
Ability to change your springboard
Reintroduction of 16gb storage capacity

Just Maybe:cool:

I hope not. Apple would hurt them selfs
Sure
Already does
Yep
Already does that
