Jumping from a 1st generation to the upcoming 4th generation iPod touch, I can't wait!
I'd be really disappointed if the 4G will not get a camera since I've been waiting for 3 years now. I prefer a camera on the back because I know I won't bother using FaceTime and because I hardly have Wi-Fi here. Even if it doesn't get a camera, I have to upgrade anyways because I want the iOS 4.
Also, my iPod Classic (4th generation) recently died on me 🙁 So I'm using my iPod touch fulltime and what I really miss is a simple next/pause button.
The volume buttons on the current iPod touch, I really would have prefered them functioning as next/pause buttons more rather than adjusting the volume (an official setting, letting the user decide whether they want it to function as volume buttons or next/pause buttons would be great!). I don't have/want those Apple earphones cause they are crappy quality 😛

There are some other good options for earphones with the playback controls in them besides Apple's earbuds
These are great earbuds that are relatively cheap for the quality. Playback controls aren't going to appear so you might as well invest in a good pair of earbuds/headphones with playback controls. I'm content with double tapping the home button whenever I need to control my music.
alright i've got some more speculation.
think in september apple is going to do a complete refresh of the ipod touch line, meaning previous models will only be available through the refurbished store, ebay, etc.
they're going to include facetime cameras on all of these redesigned models, as well as adding facetime functionality into ichat. I don't see why you are all doubting that apple will add this.. apple isn't selling 10 million iphones this year.. i don't think. all models will be the same thickness as the iphone, with the same design scheme & possibly more colors. first there will be the ipod touch, and then also the ipod touch mini. the touch mini being the same width as the ipod touch, yet it will have a square design. price points for the ipod touch 8/16/32/64 will be 199/299/399/449 and $50 less for each of the mini models. i'm not sure how apps will work on the ipod touch mini.. however it will differentiate quite a bit from the full sized model in battery and size, giving it it's own product base. due to the fact that the current ipod touches are so thin, making them the thickness of the current iphone will allow apple to add features such as sd slots (only a single slot in the touch mini), rear cameras, 3g, etc.
apple will add built in sd functionality into their mobile device line eventually. they've obviously accepted it, as they have added it in 90% of their recent product revisions. the only question is if it will be with the ipod touch 4 or if they wait until the next iphone revision. which is very likely. apple is currently stepping their game up a bit, but i think unless they really want to blow peoples minds with the new ipod touch; (which they're totally capable of doing, and will hopefully be pushed to do due to all the recent heat they've been getting), then they'll probably hold out & make sd available across the entire next (5th) generation of touch devices. this time around it'll probably just be facetime, new design, a4,retina, optional 3g and maybe 5mp back camera across the board.
and what's with everyone trying to say what the ipod touch is about? it's obviously about a **** ton of things other than just music & media, or jsut fun and games. obviously apple wants these devices to slowly evolve into our handheld computers & communication devices that also film and edit HD and take pictures & play games and so DO YOU GET THE PICTURE? a handheld communication device doesn't NEED to be a phone. and that's what apple needs to realize and/or show people. apple creates the future of handheld media devices & will continue to improve. . albeit slowly, quite surely. thus facetime will be included, added to ichat, that way damn near anyone with an apple laptop or new gen touch device will able to utilize this new feature.

There's not gonna be an iPod touch mini, why would Apple go through all that trouble when they already have a nano and a touch working perfectly fine? Optioinal 3G is a no, that would just make it an optional iPhone, and Apple wants you to spend the most money possible on their products. 5MP back camera? The best you can hope for is 3.2MP with MAYBE flash, but no way are they gonna give us the 5MP, unless Steve Jobs has a stroke and forgets how much money they cost per device ($14.99), however, I'm not saying it's impossible. What I AM saying is that it's you'd be more likely to actually witness hell freezing over than get an iPod touch mini, and the current iPod touch with 3G and a 5MP camera.

I'd love to see a mini-iPad aesthetic, aluminum on the back and sides with glass front. Front and rear cameras with FaceTime, Retina display, 512 MB RAM, A4, and maybe a 3G option as well.

Within weeks could potentially mean September (it is July already), its very unlikely that we will see a new touch before September. Of course they could announce it in September and release it just before the holiday season or October/November at the latest.
Not really, thats about 8-9 weeks.
There is about 99.99999999% chance that it will be released in September.
This is why I don't get the poll in the first place. It doesn't hurt to have it there, I guess, but everyone will obviously vote for September unless they're joking or unaware of Apple's calendar.
I'm thinking along the same lines as you, except the aluminum would resemble the new iPhone rather than the iPad. It would essentially be an iPhone 4 with a band going around it, except the back glass is replaced by aluminum. It would be thinner than the iPhone but equally as sexy

Another reason why the 4G might have 16gb/32gb is that iPod Touch prices decreased from 2nd gen to 3rd gen, and maybe the 1st gen to 2nd gen.
