iPod touch The Next iPod Touch

They're not going to give a an iPhone 4, without the phone portion.
If this is really your list you'll be disappointed.

Especially with the display PROBABLY next year. The most I can see is alittle higher res, but not Retina on this release.
 
it doesn't make sense for apple to have 3 different displays in their lins for current devices. they will have the 3gs ones, the supposed mid res ones for the touch and the retina for the ip4. economies of scale man! get with it. We're are getting the display this year. apple has historically kept the ipod touch and the iphone the same with specs like processor and screens.
 
I'm almost entirely sure that Apple will amaze us with the iPod Touch 4g. Think about it, iTouch sales haven't been that high this year. The device wont hold up if the features are constantly outdated compared to the iPhone, and the sales will continue to drop.
What the iTouch needs is, difference. Apple needs to "change everything. Again." If they decide to do a minor update like the 3g version did, the iTouch will quickly become a much less interesting product.

Here's what Apple has on the plate - low iPod touch sales, thousands (maybe millions) disappointed by the lack of a camera, and an iPod nano/classic market growing over their new child. What they want to do is bring the touch back up, since it's their 3rd most expensive mobile device and we're all aware that iPad and iPhone sales aren't going down any time soon. So, they need to have just 5 things to get new buyers - a low end 4G device, retina display, a camera (pretty much ANYWHERE, for any function, but still photos would be preferred over video), a new design from the boring contour design, and the A4 chip with faster processing and performance upgrades. I think year after year, seeing the disappointment from everyone at their iPod touch reveals, "where's the camera? where's the camera?" has finally gotten to them. If it hasn't, I can say very little for Apple's future :)

Facetime needs two cameras two be complete.

Agreed. Can you post your pic of the iPad version here? That version seems probable.

Just an article about Ipod touch sales...I don't think Apple needs to do a whole lot to keep selling the device.

My version of the itouch 4g

16gb model for $199 - 100% (base same as ipad)
32gb model for $299 - 100% (not sure about price)
64gb model for $349 - 100% (not sure about price)
128gb model for $399 - 25% (again not sure about the price)
retina and gyro - 100% (some apps will need this to run)
front facing camera - 90% (1 million facetime products)
rear facing camera - 50% (1 million facetime products)
new design - 95% (might not look same as iphone b/c of antenna glitches)
faster processor - 100%
3g model - 0% (apple says it will drop iphone sales)
white models - 90%

We can't be sure until Sep, but we can still hope:)!

Just because they don't need to improve sales, doesn't mean that they wont seek to improve an already strong line of products, the iPod nano is the worlds most popular personal media player, yet every redesign of that has pushed for better technology, a camera and redesign.

Just because Apple doesn't need to get more sales in the touch, doesn't mean they will back shelf it.

They can underwhelm with the next update and it will still sell strongly.
 
You know I just registered to join this thread... I'm really excited to have an ipod touch! At first, I promised never to buy an apple product... (shame :s )
But then I bought an ipod nano 4g and I was stunned. I just liked it. The only minus point is the camera. It isn't possible to take pictures. That is why I now want the ipod touch. For games, music, video's and the camera! So please tell me the new release for september is for sure ... ? Because otherwise I would buy a lowpriced 3g now ...

Ps. I found the previous posts very informative. Very nice. ;)

No camera on the current Gen iPod touch.

but music, video and games on the iPod are brilliant!

Well, Apple likes to follow a trend in releasing their products, mainly their iPod/iPhone line. So based on previous years, a new refresh is expected to come September. (Most likely on or after September 8, since the Mac/iPod touch deal end the day before.)

They can't underwhelm forever. iPhone 4 is a vastly superior device to the original iPhone. The 3rd Generation Touch is not a vastly superior device to the original iPod. I expect Apple to put out a pretty significant update, aka, I think we'll see more improvements, enhancements, and added features than the last 2 updates have produced.

Let's not forget, Apple is not the company that makes products just good enough to sell enough units. They push hard by making the best device they can. I guess what I mean to say is, if Apple has a working design of an iPod Touch with front and rear facing cameras, I do not think they will withhold it until next year just because they can sell lots of units without it. They'd rather include it and sell millions more units this year than they would otherwise.

I hope you are right. I already knew it was tradition to apple to do so. But I've heard rumors ... That there wouldn't be a new ipod touch this year but in september next year. :(
 
What the new iPOD Touch Really Needs

The new iPOD touch needs the following:

Retina Display/Resolution but in a 4" or 4.3" screen (OH YEAH!!!)
Same design as the new Iphone 4.
Better battery Life
More Ram
A4 processor

If Steve can can deliver this, I will definitely buy one before he ends his speech (if you can do that).

Personally i would like more choice as colors. Even one more option would be nice.

There will not be a screen size increase.
No iPhone 4 design is likely, more likely is an iPad design.
Better battery life is possible.
More RAM is possible.
A4 is almost guaranteed.

Hopefully they will offer an iPad style design or the iPhone style design in black and white, maybe they are thinking of doing what they have with other iPods, offering about 8 colours.

You cannot comment on all of these things as you have not seen it or worked on it.

You cannot guarantee the screen size change
The design, there probably will have been designs of all kind done by apple, i hope they choose a good one!
better battery life is almost guaranteed, as this is something apple works really hard to improve.
A4 and higher RAM are probably going to be included.
 
Well, a friend of mine told me the new ipod touch is just a rumor ... And maybe there won't be a new one until next year. :s
And I joined because I've read the complete thread and talking about the ipod keeps me bissy while waiting for it. ;)
I'm not an expert but I really want it to have:
- a 5MP camera (flash woud be nice) to make video and PICTURES
- I think A4 and retina would be nice... But I'm not the kind of person who would notice. :(
-WiFi
-Good battery

So please apple don't let a loyal fan (who is willing to pay for a good ipod touch ) down! ;)

I agree. . . but I often ask myself who would need/want an iPhone if you could just get the iTouch?

Imagine if you worked at Apple and you're trying to sell an iPhone. Someone then asks you "Why should I buy this over the iTouch?" If Apple basically give the touch the same features. . .What would be the point/Who would want it? Sure, the difference is it's a phone, but some people would opt for the phone if it's the only option(Feature wise).

Apple would make more money from the iPhone because they get a percent from AT&T, over a 2 Year period. Whereas the iTouch would only benefit from the initial purchase.

Anything is possible though, I do believe it'll be a solid update and camera's would be great so more people can Facetime!
