If they do the same lineup as last year, then I will be pissed. But I want a cheaper iPod too. But nothing like the 3rd gen when it's just voice control. I want camera.. FaceTime... Glass backing... And all that other stuff. But of course if they give the iPod touch 3G it pretty much could be an iPhone. So of course we won't get half of that.

I'm still waiting till December for mine. You don't know withapple these days... Wifi issues or whatever. But of course, just avoid holding it that way.

This thread has singlehandedly doubled my post count... I think I'm addicted.
Hmmmm... I have over 300 posts in this thread alone.

I dont think theyll reintroduce the 3G, i think they will have a hamstrung 4G with (a) camera(s), for the $199.

Okay, you're right about location services and bluetooth, and remember, I wasn't implying that they WOULD add 3G, just an idea.

It'd be stupid if they didn't have entry level (8/16GB) as 4G, that would cut sales. We know it, Apple knows it, and I'm not gonna buy anything more than 32G without a GREAT reason.

Haha, my mom bought me another iTunes card ($15) and I spent it on a few episodes of Mythbusters... :p

Now I have to compress all my music in iTunes to 128kbps AAC and get rid of some apps. I NEED 32GB!! AHH! :)

Its kinda obvious that the $199 wont be a full 4G, but a hamstrung. Here are the features that might be on the base model.

Gyro
Camera
Retina

Those are the three basics that might be implemented.

I have a $15 dollar giftcard laying around somewhere that i won in at school.

We were having our end-of-the-year celebration and we had a raffle and they drew my ticket! I got a pack of Starburst, like a 2-pound hersheys bar, and a $15 iTunes gift card.

What I'm thinking is, they HAVE to expand FaceTime. So, what we (the $199 payers) may get is an iPod with all the 4G features, but still in a 3G case. Which, I'm all for. I can just buy Invisible Shield for 25 bucks and be happy. BUT, if they decide to give us the full iPod touch 4 8/16GB at just $199, that's cool too

Im was only planning on buying the 32GB because it will have all the features.

My prediction:

16GB:
$199
New Design
Gyroscope
A4 processor
256 MB of RAM

32GB:
$299
New Design
Gyroscope
A4 Processor
512 MB of RAM
Front-facing camera
Retina Display

64GB:
$399
New Design
Gyroscope
A4 Processor
512 MB of RAM
Front-facing camera
3.2 MP rear-facing camera
Retina Display

I don't think they would do the first case. I mean Apple is pretty consistent in terms of how they want their products and when. I mean as soon as the newer model comes out, the previous model becomes the lower line, and they've done that three times in a row. I don't think they would break that chain.

They should have all the features of the 4G on both upper models.

I think all the low model will get is the camera(s) and a redesign, because of the cameras.

It's only happened 3 times in a row with the iPhone, the iPod touch has never had a different generation as the low end til this year. BUT, taking into consideration that the 2G iPod touch was the same as the 3G iPod touch, albeit some of the performance changes. So maybe the same will happen with 4G.

If the only difference was performance i would buy the $199.

I honestly think they'll tier them similarly to what there is now. An entry-level iPod touch seems like a really good way to get an iTunes app store revenue stream started, and keep your customers thereafter. I'll be upgrading from my 3G. I'll just have to decide whether I want more than my current 32GB of storage. The storage will most likely be the only differentiation between the upper two models. And I'm assuming no 128GB just yet (still too expensive).

No retina, yes Gyro, yes Camera.

I don't think Apple would put a super-high res screen on a base line touch

I don't really see a price drop being a possibility on the iPod touch except for exception of the 32GB and 64GB model. I see those models getting a mere $20-$30 price drop, they are already going for low prices on Amazon but that is just because their almost at the end of their life cycle, which points to a refresh that will most likely happen on September 8th. Anyway, I don't see them redesigned a baseline 8GB model, I also doubt them making it 16GB.

Well, seeing how the iPhone 3GS released with the new iPhone 4, it was an 8GB model, I don't see the new touch being a 16GB model for $199.

The base model will stay as an 8GB version of the previous model, it is a low profit, low price point marketing tool to bring young new users into the Apple ecosystem.

I don't expect a price drop for new models. Even current end of life iPod touch models selling well (up 48% in latest quarter compared to last year). I expect same prices as last year, and a relatively underwhelming update where we don't get all that we want. I'd rather even have a modest price increase if they give everything that I want (A4 CPU, 802.11n, 5MP rear camera, front camera, Facetime, retina display, 512MB RAM). Snowball's chance in hell we'll get all of that.

I'm feeling rather pessimistic of late :(. Apple has a history of disappointing in terms of features.

If they put all those features it would be almost exactly like the new iPhone 4. I think they will put in 802.11n, A4 on 32GB and 64GB, Retina on 32GB and 64GB, FaceTime cam on 32GB and 64GB, possible rear 3.2MP Cam, 256MB RAM. And 100% sure gyroscope, since the touch is marketed as a gaming device.
