Welcome to the original iTouch. Had WiFi since the 1st Gen.Well, a friend of mine told me the new ipod touch is just a rumor ... And maybe there won't be a new one until next year. :s
And I joined because I've read the complete thread and talking about the ipod keeps me bissy while waiting for it.
I'm not an expert but I really want it to have:
- a 5MP camera (flash woud be nice) to make video and PICTURES
- I think A4 and retina would be nice... But I'm not the kind of person who would notice.
-WiFi
-Good battery
So please apple don't let a loyal fan (who is willing to pay for a good ipod touch ) down!

True. Plus Safari is great. With this release I'm 60% positive it'll have a camera, at least for Facetime.

I can't imagine why one in front of the ipod touch would come in handy. You wouldn't be able to see what you are recording. :s So that brings me to the next point: What is facetime?(Sorry for not knowing...

Innocent question. Facetime is pretty much apples version of videocalling. In fact it is just a glorified version of video calling.
I dont, but read through it. I never say something is certain. I only comment on the likelyhood or give my own opinions on things.

As much as I want all the features on the $199 8GB model, I don't think it will happen.
Even though it may seem unlikely that the new iPOD Touch will get a bigger screen, there is still hope. No one knows what Apple is going to release so almost anything is possible. If they came out with a 4" or 4.3" screen like the Evo or Droid X that would be awesome.
^^ i think it will happen. because apple can't get away this year if they doa redesign. people will question as to why the 8gb is soo different from the 32 and 64gb. different screen, no camera. possible things like old chrome backing etc. remember when we had 2g ipod touch which all had the same features but only separated by capacity? same for the 1g. it is entirely possible. flash chip prices come down every year. and i think the 8gb touch is dead. 8gb doesn't cut it anymore when after the OS install, you only have 6.5GB. i think 16gb will replace the 8gb.
I don't think/I hope that the base model isn't an old model. It worked with the last update because there was no comsetic difference for the models. To the public, they were exactly the same products.
If they were to redesign the touch, then they should (imo) just have a downgraded 4th generation for the base. Then add on the features as the price and capacity go up. But they could give us the 3rd generation because they used the 3gs as the lowest point for the iphone 4.

I can practically assure you that Apple will keep the 3rd gen iPod touch as the $199 model, with 16GB, just as they are keeping the 8GB iPhone 3GS with the iPhone 4.
^^ that makes me sad. I want a full fledged 4th gen for maybe 230 - 250. But still. I want all redesigned ones with full features across the board.

It would be nice. And I know that apple doesn't change its prices ... But I really think the price will go up eventually. Or is it possible to keep making better, faster stuff without more expencive parts ? :s
I'll agree with this, although I am curious if there's a numbers on app store purchases made from an iPod Touch vs iPhone users. Numbers that can be proportioned or something.. wonder if touch vs phone draws in more app store buyers.
But yeah my GF has an iPod touch so had no desire for an iPhone and just opted for a BlackBerry for email use and miscellaneous stuff while her touch does games, facebook, music etc.
Guys, base line model will be a 4th generation. Everyone saying it won't is wrong That's all. They seem to forget we're dealing with an iPOD, and not an iPHONE. It isn't an iPhone without a phone, it's an iPod to Apple. In iPod TOUCH talk, 2nd generation = 3rd generation with a slight performance handicap. The 8/16GB base line model IS GOING TO BE A 4TH GEN. Whether or not it has all of the same features as the 32GB and 64GB models, is debatable. They may just take away some performance upgrades and some features we may not even care about. But they NEED retina display to run apps that are upgrading, they NEED A4 to run iOS4 correctly, and they NEED a camera to market FaceTime. Look at other iPODS, they're all selling base line models on the same generation. They're only marketing lower level iPhones as the entry level to make you buy the more expensive product! If it somehow, by some impossible chance, however, IS a 3rd generation, I know TONS of people (from this thread, other threads, and my own friends) who will NOT be wasting an extra 100 dollars for no reason to upgrade. I'd rather wait another year.

The front camera is for filming yourself and seeing it.

I don't think they will change the prices this gen, there will be some sort of base model at $199. You will just be getting more features for your money. If there is remaining stock of the 8GB 2nd/3rd gen I could see that dropping to $99 but again that might be up to the retailers who have remaining stock left.

As far as 8GB 2008 iPod touch ("2nd gen" $229 list price) vs. 8GB 2009 iPod touch (faux-"3rd gen" $199 list price), these are identical in every respect.

The base $199 model will be seriously handicapped in some way compared to the true 4th gen models and not simply separated by storage. I'd put money that it will be a 16GB 3rd gen model, which will run iOS 4 fine (multitasking and all). In my book that is not a 4th gen part.
Either that or 4th gen will be just a marginal upgrade, so marginal that they can maintain profit margins at $199. I'll be seriously upset if they go with a weak upgrade for the $299/$399 models.

I was just reviewing the new iPhone's innovations. I think a lot of these iPhone innovations definetly rub off on the Ipod Touch 4G. Such as:
Camera, definetly
Maybe facetime
Multi Tasking
Better Res, maybe not HD, but better
App Folders
Ability to change your springboard
Reintroduction of 16gb storage capacity
Just Maybe
I think it will have retina display, and they will make an iPhone 4 like design but slimer, and the base model will be a 16 Gb version of 3G iTouch, just like the base model of the iPhone 4 is a 3GS 8GB Iphone. September must be the date!

Every single iPhone/iPod touch app in the App Store is written for 3.5" devices, they would not introduce that sort of fragmentation just after introducing the fragmentation of the Retina Display.
