i keep on saying this. the only reason why apple got away w/ the lower end model being previous gen last year was due to the same exterior. people didn't ask because they looked the same. however, if apple does a redesign of it, people will wonder why the low end looks so different from the higher end ones. I can guarantee that all the ipods this year will look the same but the lower-end model might be semi-crippled w/ the features due to its price. THERE IS NOT GOING TO BEA LOW END 3RD GEN THIS YEAR. ALL 4TH GEN ACROSS THE BOARD. they did that for the 2nd gen and the first gen. why not now. it is certainly possible.

You do realize that currently apple sells the 8gb iPhone 3gs (3rd gen) along side the new and redesigned iPhone 16gb & 32gb 4th gen. So i doubt a redesign would factor in that desicion much, all they would have to do is inform the consumer like they do with the iPhone.

The only sticking point in carrying over the low end 3rd gen iPod touch model is that apple never released an 8gb version. So unless they either bump up the starting capacity to 16gb or create a 8gb 3rd gen, thats why its more likely that its going to be 4th gens across the board.

The created an 8GB iPhone 3GS just last month before iPhone 4 release. That configuration did not exist before - it used to only come in 16GB and 32GB config. Similarly, they can just create a 16GB iPod touch 3rd gen, a configuration that does not currently exist. The other argument for this is that many of the components for iPhone 3GS and iPod touch 3rd gen are similar (display, CPU and internal chips). From volume manufacturing standpoint, I don't think it makes a lot of sense to just have the one product requiring these components. iPod touch has always been similar in many features (CPU, display, RAM, etc, etc) as iPhone. Reasons for this are (1) it's most cost effective (2) ensures compatibility with OS and software.

I really hope they go this route, because otherwise it means a weak 4th gen iPod touch. They can sustain profit margins with a lot more good features at $299 and $399 than $199.

If you did work for apple, you would have been found and removed from the company by now,

apple employees are supposed to remain silent about all products, and you would most likely be dismissed if you where found to be posting on a forum about apple rumors.
I know that much. I could have been removed from the company. You THOUGHT that i didnt work at Apple.
Rumors will heat up very, very soon. (about 2 weeks)
Most likely.
I thiknk it will be 16gb as lowest and 32gb, 64gb, and 128gb.:D
Im not trying to be rude or anything but i just dont think there will be a 128GB, that kind of flash memory is pretty expensive.

If apple is marketing it as a gaming device and there are some heavy gamers and movie watchers and music listeners, they will need more storage. But I DO somewhat agree. I think if they have 128gb of flash memory the ipad 2g or 3g will be the first to get it.

Yes, I agree they will likely make the base model a 16GB model. They did create an 8GB iPhone 3GS shortly before iPhone 4 came out. I don't agree that retina = iOS4. I think iPhone 3GS and iPod touch 3rd Gen run all features of iOS4, except Facetime, FT does not hinge on Retina display but more the front camera.

The analogies to iPhone are as follows:
1st gen release - same models across the board separated only by capacity
2nd gen release - same models separated only by capacity
3rd gen release - base model was a 2nd gen model, 3rd gen models at the mid and high end.

The above is true for both iPod touch and iPhone.

For iPhone 4:
4th gen release - base model was a 3rd gen model, halved in storage capacity at lower cost. 4th gen models at the mid and high end.

This suggests, that for iPod touch 2010 - base model will be 3rd gen model, halved in storage capacity to 16GB and cut in price, likely from $299 to $199.

Apple is perfectly happy selling iPhone 3GS with iOS4 without retina, Facetime, A4, etc. They would be perfectly happy selling iPod touch 3rd gen with iOS4 without all that either. They're going to want to make us pay for all the goodies that the 4th gen offers.

For $199 today you get 8GB storage, slower CPU, no multitasking, and 128MB RAM. For $199 in Sept, going with a 3rd gen model, Apple would offer 16GB storage, faster CPU, multitasking and 256MB RAM. I think Apple would argue that's a good enough upgrade for the low end model.

I will have to respectfully disagree. Although I do agree that retina does not equal iOS4, many features of it do. All apps changing their pixel graphics, Apples new "better mobile screen", etc. FaceTime does not also equal iOS4, but it DOES equal what Apple will possibly use as their outlet to sell more FaceTime devices. We all know that we're probably not going to see an 8GB model this year around because of the fact that 8GB=7.4GB, and iOS4=1.3GB. So, basically, they're selling us 6GB at an 8GB price. I'd rather pay, and many other people would rather pay for a 16GB device and get 14. This would mean that Apple would probably think the reasonable thing, and instead of making a whole new slew of 16GB 3rd generations, make a whole new slew of 16GB 4th generations. Cause to be quite frank and honest, No one's going to upgrade to the low end device if it's 3rd generation, when we could get larger sized 3rd generations for lower prices from other stores. This will mean they lose 1/3rd if their iPod touch sales, and they've already lost a lot from last year seeing as how they just gave the 2nd generation a better processor and called it a 3rd generation. Uhm, no thanks Apple. I bought the same thing last year. If they want to see upgrades, they want to see people REALLY reach for iPod touches this holiday season, their low end WILL have a camera. Retina. And A4, because I didn't mention it earlier but A4 DOES certainly equal iOS4. So, my idealism that this years 8/16GB model will be a fourth generation. If it's not, then, really, I'll just wait another year.

What I would find awesome is if it would be possible to choose your slider, background, to put a pass on one app, ... Just to make it more personal.
Now you need to jailbreak for it. I just don't want to jailbreak.
Only wanted to mention bacause I've nowhere seen this subjet on the thread. :)

Jailbreaking is easy, hassle-free, and necessary IMO. I love to be able to access all the things I want to turn off (wifi, bluetooth, location, etc.) with one swipe. I can access my iPod touch remotely with SMC. I can hide all the apps I don't use with Poof. Backgrounding is much better than iOS 4. I'll be buying an iPod touch 4G, and one of the first things I'll be doing with it is jailbreaking.

That's why I hope apple makes more things accecable to the buyers ...
With the previous ipods they are practicaly calling the jailbreaking over themselves. :s

Yes I agree, the iPad 2G is going to be the first iOS device with 128GB most likely, then most likely the iPod touch not this year, but next year when the iPod touch 5G comes out. Then next year the iPhone will get 64GB, which is unheard of in any smartphone today unless you buy a 64GB MicroSD, which aren't even on the market yet!

iPod touch sales are up 48% year-over-year in the latest quarter. I believe Apple will not want to offer the goods at $199. $199 will get you the crumbs from Apple. Apple will want you to reach deeper into your pockets for the true 4th gen. Perhaps, that is hubris on their part, but that is what I think they will do. iPod touch will still sell well for them.

My big worry is that $299 and $399 still only gets you crumbs. Then, yes, you will see same model across the board. It will just s**k.

I just hope it has EVERYTHING. Eventhough they raise the price. But I just think that if they raise the price, they just can't afford to take it too high. Otherwise people would buy iPhones instead of iPods touch.

Unfortunately that may be why it might not include everything.

If it does have everything people will just buy the iPod over the iPhone, and the iPhone makes Apple more money than the iPod touch

I just think 64-128 is a big step.

I wont be so fast. I might jailbreak but i dont think i will just in case something happens so that i need the warranty.

They cant afford to raise the price, unless they want to lose customers.

If you're worried about something, and it's still under warranty with a jailbroken iPod, you can just Restore from back-up. It will remove all jailbroken Applications, and it will be like you never jailbroke it.

Ive heard that the Touch keeps a log of all the data, so they will be able to tell if you did jailbreak, is that true?

Oh, yes, and another reason i will not be buying on release date, is that there will not be very many cases released. And im not using my Touch without a case.

**Edit** This is now the forum with the most replies in the iPod Touch forum! :D

Nah, the data from jailbreak doesn't technically gets synced into iTunes, so you don't have to worry.

Even if you had a problem with your iPod, I don't think the guys behind the Genius Bar does a background check everytime an iPod/iPhone comes in, unless the iPod/iPhone blatantly looks jailbroken.

I have used my iPod touch 2G 8gig with no case for about a year now, and the only scratches are on the chrome backing. If you care about that sort of thing, then who am I to judge, but I'm just fine without a case.

And congratulations on all these posts! The 10^3 mark is just around the corner.:)

I'm frankly shocked iPad did not come in at 32, 64 and 128GB. The thing is huge and is intended for content consumption. Couldn't Apple cram in multiple cheaper, smaller capacity flash chips to achieve the higher capacities? 16GB strikes me as ridiculous for a tablet.

We're going to get shortchanged in Sept because of Apple's hubris :-(.

i wanta matte type back. I would like an anodized aluminum back. but something matte please. I hate the chrome. I don't want to see my face on the back of my ipod. there is a thing called a mirror for that. I would much like for my ipod's back to remain scratch free after exposure to air please.

hhaha :D I don't have an ipod touch yet but is it really that scratchable ?

Can't we just set another question ? ipod touch 5g ? :D

well, not from air contact but it scratches extremely easily. even if it goes into a sleeve. the from glass on the other hand, is next to unscratchable.you should have a look at the back my 2g touch. it looks like a monkey and cat took turns torturing it.

What's there to talk about? Apple will probably release a totally new line of products and the 5g may be based off of that...its too early to start talking about it.:)

Scratches arent the only reason. I need drop protection too. The less scratches the more its worth.

Yah. Thanks. :)

Yes. At least the chrome is. Air contact actually might scratch it.

The glass on the front is pretty scratch resistent.
