Hi, I have been reading on the Nintendo anti piracy and a confused, can you buy second hand games for the Switch 2 and use them and not be banned by Nintendo?

As long as the games were not copied, yeah.

EDIT: Also as long as you don't plan on playing the game online (or being online) you can still play copied games.

Ah thanks, so it could be a risk buying second hand games as you do not know if they have been copied? Or will the original game just work fine if bought second hand?

That is the fear. As far as I know you can't tell if someone copied a used game and turned around and resell it. Both (for lack of better word) copies can't be played online at the same time. At least with the Switch 2 Nintendo is explicitly looking for MIG Cart users and banning the consoles. I don't know if they don't care about Switch 1. I haven't 100% been keeping up with all of this, maybe someone else here has more info.

Thanks, hmm understandable from Nintendos side I guess, but is bad also as Nintendo games are horrendously expensive now and VERY rarely go on sale.

Always nice to see N getting recognition and what are MS playing at ?

They are probably flirting with Nintendo as a step toward proposing bringing Xbox cloud streaming to switch 2.

Just saw a report that as of the end of Q3 (Sept.) that the Switch was within 10,000 units of the DS in terms of global sales, meaning it is likely Nintendo's all-time best selling system.

I don't use it so much since the Steam Deck (I'm a PC gamer, so the Switch is relegated to 'cozy' games), but still adore the Switch!

I know it's not N but imagine the flak if they did this ! -

Sony got some flack for this, but at the end of the day it is only reduced to as much as it had originally and it is dead easy to upgrade the storage anyway.

I watched some gameplay footage of Star Wars Outlaws on the Switch 2 and it runs very well, looks like it does dip below 30 but not by much. Impressive.

Starting to consider picking up an OLED before they go the way of the dodo. Was thinking on steam deck but already have steam on an aging unsupported desktop that might take a Linux install should I want to take the route. With ram prices and other PC component being insane and being a lite casual gamer wannabe maybe this is the possibility. One other catch is I've heard reports the carts for the switch and even 3ds have started to go bad.

At least most games are on carts and many don't seem to be keycard online required junk. Still seems like I might have to sign up for a Nintendo account anyway.

Haven't fully decided but I could evidently walk right into a GameStop and pick one up and a game. Initial price a bit up there because need at least a game. Steam deck I already have games for and many are indi and have some form of deck support. Then again the deck is Linux based and may need tinkering.

Thoughts?

Steam Deck. Most stuff works on Deck outside of kernel anti-cheat titles like Fortnite or BF6. Indies generally require very little fiddling. It's also much more powerful than the Switch 1, closer to the Switch 2 in handheld mode.

Switch is good if you want the exclusives. For third party stuff with rare exception the Steam Deck is better.

Not only that, Steam Deck performs better than it has any right to for modern games while looking solid as well.

This year I have played:
- Avowed (2025)
- Expedition 33 (2025)
- Baldur's Gate 3 (2023)
- Cyberpunk 2077 (2020+)
- Legend of Heroes Trails Through Daybreak (2024 NA)
- Vampire the Masquerade Bloodlines 2 (2025)
- The Outer Worlds 2 (late 2025)
and of course older games.

Guess the steam deck would have the potential for me to retire this first gen ryzen desktop that's going to be very hard to upgrade at any rate.

Well a few games Deck won't run well will run on Switch 2 as they are better optimised for Switch 2, Starwars Outlaws being a great example, runs buttery smooth on Switch 2 with ray tracing. Deck barely manages 15fps at the most basic settings.

They were considering a Switch OLED VS. Steam Deck.

Welp looks like I sat on the fence too long as usual. Having stock issues and the deck is out right now. Still have my desktop for steam.

And still mulling over the OLED switch while things are somewhat available and the impending price hikes...

Why switch oled and not switch 2?

Don't really like the concept of key cards, massive downloads and move towards digital and not many of the new games for the new system interest me. And ports and remasters and remastered ports 😳I have entertained the 2 though. And most platforms are turning into this though.

Current wish list for the console
Mario Wonder
Mario kart 8
Animal crossing new horizons
Star dew valley.

Haven't dug into things a whole lot but the switch has been in my head for a while.

I have a switch and feel similar about the switch too. No games have tempted me to upgrade and announced titles are very expensive remasters or don’t introduce gameplay mechanics that are tempting.

You guys and gals are not missing much. I have the Switch 2 and the upgrades are not worth the asking price, although my Switch 2 turned out to be free. Graphics for AC New Horizons Switch vs S2 is barely noticeable and many of the S2 games like Hades 2 runs in 1080P on the S2.

For me personally the draw was smoother framerates. So far I've not seen anything from Nintendo proper that couldn't be done on the Switch 1.
