Are you making the NHL Thread grandmaster? :D

We ususally keep the discussion in this thread, but sure why not.

I just figured since I saw a MLB playoff thread we should get the same treatment too, plus it IS a whole new season ;)

We have no touch icing in our rec league, but then if they waited for us to go after it, too much extra time might come off the clock.:p Not to mention some rookie teams would get beaten back into their defensive zone every time and they wouldn't get the icing calls.

In the NHL, they are too good, and maybe 1 in 10 or 1 in 15 times the offensive player beats out the icing call, or it wraps the boards hard enough to come around the wing for the play on net. That's too high an occurrence for them to eliminate it. I do wish they would go back to more obstruction and interference calls. It seems like they cracked down and relaxed again. More flow, less clutch n grab. It does seem like the one thing I have noticed is since the lockout and the new rules and the refs being 'harder' with calls, that there are almost no cross-checking calls anymore, and I sure do see enough of it.

Go Avs!

Icing is one of the hardest rules to try and think of a solution for. You need it in some instances, and you don't in others.

We should, but the MLB thread has like 2 million more posts than us. It's ok though, we're all diehard hockey fans. I love hockey more than baseball.

I will start a playoff thread once everything is settled.

You personally, or your team?

I needs my WC in the hockey thread! We carried that thread last season!

I don't really follow hockey all that much these days outside of my boys...and they sucked it up this year. I might chime in once in a while if I catch a game, but I certainly won't be a regular.

What's your team?

Sabres...how the mighty have fallen.

:(

Well, to be fair, you do have more important things to attend to sir.

And fallen they have.

At least the Winter Classic was fun. haha, and i only follow the Pens then catch up during playoffs, pfft to other teams but my own for now.

Before the shootout came along it went like this:

2 pts to winner in Reg
2 pts to winner in OT
1 pt each team for a tie
0 if you lost in reg or OT

Since the SO is supposed to eliminate ties, the points had to be redistributed.

Like I said, it's stupid.

I would like to see a 10 min 4 on 4 OT before going to a shootout. It would certainly make things a whole lot better.

Winner gets 2 pts, loser gets nothing. Or we do away with the point system. Winner wins, loser losses.

Actually, I believe OT losses still got one point. I remember records having 4 portions, IE 60-15-4-3

Wow I missed a LOT of conversation today.

Don, after the playoff spots are locked make a new NHL '08 playofff thread  We'll have predictions and screaming matches there.

Actually I was planning on doing it. I did it last year in a different forum, had a bracket graphic made up and a nice system worked out for posting. But if Don would like to do it he's more than welcome to.

As for the season running too long, I can see that for someone who isn't a hockey fan. But for a hockey fan I don't think it runs too long. It runs about 8-9 months, about as long as baseball season. However, it would be difficult to play more than 82 regular season games. Hockey is EXTREMELY physically stressing.

Not saying other sports aren't, but hockey is rough. More rough than football in my opinion, and they only play 16 regular season football games.

As for the point system, I don't think the 1 point for an OT/SO loss is a bad thing. Obviously the point is to reward for winning, but I don't think a reward for keeping it tied for regulation is out of order. However, if you go 0-0-82, you still have a SHOT at the playoffs haha lol.

Aha so as of 99/2000, losses in OT gave you a point. Before then they didn't. Good info man.

Some crazy games last night.

Caps win easily over Canes - should prove for some excitement now in their divisional race, as well as if one or both teams make the playoffs.

Preds came back from 3-0 down to rally over the Blues. Considering it vaulted them back over Vancouver and put them in charge of their own destiny, fairly interesting.

Oil gave the flames a run but came up short and now after a terrific stretch run are out of the playoff hunt with only one game remaining, though they can play a little spoiler.

Vancouver took a 2-0 lead on my Avs but we rallied on a 5 minute 3 goal burst in the 2nd and a later breakaway by Forsberg to win 4-0. This clinched a playoff berth for us, while it kept Vancouver from retaking Nashville.

In the West, the Avs are currently in 6th but Calgary a point behind has a game in hand. We also sit 2 point behind the Wild for the 3rd spot and division crown but need some help getting there. A Flames win over the Wild Thursday night with an Avs win over the Wild on Sunday would knock the Wild out of the 3 seed. But the Avs would need a Calgary loss over the weekend in order to win the divsion.

The rest of the week should be pretty exciting. Montreal and Pittsburg are tied out East. Ottawa is falling and could miss the playoffs altogether after starting the season 15-2! The Rangers have been on the move a bit.

Tonight has 4 games on the docket, 3 of which have real playoff implications. Go Lightning.

Thank you! great info, especially nice to have someone who pay attention out west! (I have basic cable here, so I can only catch the Pens games on FSN) Also I am too lazy to read up on them haha.

The game tonight for the Penguins against Philly could really decide who wins the division. Early in the season the Flyers had the best of the Pens but recently we pulled our stuff together and have been back to the old 8-0 style. However the last two games we play are against the flyers and if we win both, we could very well have the division, and it could be a preview of the playoffs because Philly is 8th.

In other words, if you can catch the Pens Flyers game tonight DO SO, it should promise to be playoff atmosphere in Mellon tonight.

I get Versus which is nice b/c of the HD broadcasts, but they only do NHL on Mon/Tues night during the season.
I also get a NHLHD channel that I guess is the NHL network, but their schedule of games is erratic. If they have it great, otherwise I won't get any games tonight.

FYI for anyone who doesn't know this, all NHL games are available through NHL.com on streaming radio for free. For most games you get choice of both the home and away teams broadcasts. When I was doing a lot of work out in the garage in November, I listened to quite a few NHL games out there via streaming radio and Airfoil for Airport Express.

Just checked the listings NHLHD is featuring the Pens-Flyers game tonight!

If you caught the game it was nuts! #19 was really pushing it and I am very surprised he didn't get thrown out for blatant lust for blood tonight. Great game though if you ask me MAF is looking great and so is Crosby again!

Even more good news Scary Gary will be back for Sunday! Look out Flyers.

Nothing would please me more than to see the Sens miss the playoffs this year. That would just be unbelievable.

Heads will roll in Ottawa if they don't make it, or if they don't have an impressive run this post-season.

The Leafs have to come up with a big win Thursday night- without Mats. Hope they can put a nail in Ottawa's coffin.

I did watch most of the Pens-Flyers game last night. Ruutu was really getting to Briere. Crosby had an absolutely sick deflection for the insurance goal, but Malkin's game winner was the crown jewel of the night. Personally I didn't have a vested interest in the game though the Flyers loss does make the Caps playoffs hopes more probable. Though looking at 1-9 I would like to see the Caps and Flyers make it, with either the Bs or Sens or Canes missing out. Not sure the order of preference there. Ideally if the Canes lose their last game, and Wash wins their 2, they would take the division setting up a Caps-Rangers first round. Now that would be fun to watch. But with the Rangers having 3 games left and Ottawa slipping, it's now looking like a Rangers-Devils series in the middle.
