Yep, hockey is crazy like that. Esp this year. When was the last time in the NBA 1-9 was over .600 in a conference. The 9 seed doesn't make it yet they are .600+. That's nuts.
If you have that many good teams, why not cut the regular season down and make the playoffs a bigger event. It seems like there are too many teams, than the playoffs get watered down. As an outsider looking in I find it goes on too long.

Why not start the season earlier then, having hockey run deep into June seems kinda silly.

Beats me. When do you think they should begin and end?

I would truly love to see the Caps overtake Carolina for 3rd and give us a Caps-Rangers 3-6 1st round. I think that would be great for hockey. But I have no personal love for Washington other than I think the marketing factor of Ovechkin in the playoffs would be good.

That would be a sick matchup. Go Caps! :D

Nice pics. The Pepsi Can is a nice place, the acoustics suck though.

The NBA Western Conference is so deep, it's crazy.

When does the season start now? November? Regular season ends early April, then the playoffs run till June. Start the season early October when the weather starts getting colder and have it done by Memorial Day.

You can hate him, but you have to respect him. He's just too damn good.

The Islanders finally figured out that Rick DiPietro has been injured (since the All Star Break) He once again had surgery on his hips. 2 hip injuries in 2 years. Great way to start up that 15 year contract.

That is the way I feel about MB.I don't like him, but he is good so I respect him. However Dipietro, nah I don't think he is good at all. Weeks is better in my opinion.

He's also been to 3 of my games. Unfortunately I hurt my ankle (not playing) 4 weeks ago and have missed 4 games now. I won't be playing in the first playoff game and am now questionable for the 2nd. I guess I might have to wait till summer season. It's really frustrating.

Sorry to hear about that, but I feel your pain literally. We finally got a league together at college, but to my dismay yesterday at practice I messed up my bad shoulder :( I went down on my blades, and went to stop myself with my arm to keep going (it usually works) and I just twisted a little, and pop dislocation. I put it back in (happens often) but today it is so sore I don't know if I will be able to play our game coming up tomorrow :(. Sadly I am a little bit of a hard head so I haven't told anyone, though they know what happened and I am going to try and play. ;)

pronger gets 8 for stomping-guess double jeopardy does not apply in the NHL...

Honestly good, he deserves that if not more. Just because he has a last name the announcers like to say doesn't mean he isn't guilty of being an idiot.
No offense to the Hockey fans, this goes for the NBA as well. How can you have a playoff system with 16 teams. That is more then half the league. Why not cut it down a bit. The only sport where the playoffs run just as long as the regular season. Both NHL and NBA should have there seasons done by mid May.

The whole point is to go into basically another season. Given the point system needs revamped (I Think) but I like how the NHL playoffs are, the more I get to watch and the harder it is for a single team to dominate.

What I dont get is why baseball has such a long season, it seems like as soon as the series is up, they are in spring training. I seriously believe there is no off season there.

I did like how Basketball has a best of 5 first round, but then they switched to 7. Personally I like the Hockey system of reseeding after the 1st round. Hockey truly is the hardest earned trophy in sports b/c to win 16 is really a test of endurance and will. I agree that the season could shorten by 3 weeks or so to end mid-may. Stanley Cup Finals usually wrap up 1st week of June. 72 instead of 82 games would be great. I also think that there is an idea floating around out there that the top 16 teams go, regardless of conference and that the top 7 teams get to pick their 1st round opponent, so as to choose a fading team over someone on a hot streak, as well as for travel concerns or matchup strength. Though if you are #1 and you don't take #16, then whoever you pick is going to have a chip on their shoulder b/c you are essentially saying they are an easier opponent than the lower seed. I think it would be awesome. There is a hockey league in Europe that does that.

How many off days do they have, in that same 6 month span Baseball will play 162 games. Can they fit more games in less time if they scheduled it better?

Beg of October. Ends first week of April. You do realize that it can end in late May right? It depends how long the series go for.

Don't get my started on DP. Stubborn prick.

I think the point system should go. That's just me. I do agree that the playoffs are supposed to be whole different season. Once you get into the playoffs, all your accomplishments go out the window. You're all on equal ground.

Agreed. Baseball season is far too long. Chop it down by 20-30 games to start.

No offense. Hockey is definitely the hardest sport to play, especially back to back.

I do however think they can work on the scheduling. The Isles for example didn't have a game for like a week in the beginning of the season.

Hockey actually starts regular season first week of Oct and teams typically have 11 sets (22 games) that are back to back nights. Other wise they play every other day with the occasional 2 or 3 full days off between games. I think it is fine as is, but if they trimmed 10 games to say March 15-20 as the end date instead of April 6 or so, then they could wrap up the Cup by May 15-20. A lot of announcers, writers, and radio show people have been lobbying for the 72 game season for the past year or so.

BTW after missing 7 games I finally did play in our teams 3rd and final playoff game on Sunday. I was a bit rusty and was somehow moved from Wing to Center with only two lines, so I was tired and dying, but it was great to play. Summer season starts in 6 weeks and I'll be practicing once or twice a week till then as my ankle continues to improve. Thanks for the thoughts.

Edit. The Avs play tonight and then finish on Sunday. That's a long break at a weird time.

How does the point system work, I hear them talk about it but the standings don't seem to make sense. Why not just a win loss record?

This is the pen's regular season schedule I know I would not be able to handle how tight that is now, with the kind of play the NHL demands.

2 points for a win.
1 point to each team for getting to OT/SO. Winner gets the extra point.

It's stupid.

Because you have to factor in overtime/shoot wins/loses..We don't like endless games. They do need a new way to distribute points though just like Teh Don said and I believe that every team should have played the same amount and have the same # of games remaining. If you're an east coast fan, you'll know what I am talking about with teams like Carolina...

Games in hand suck when you don't have them. I hate being a game or two ahead of everyone and then having 4 days off at the end prior to the last game watching what other teams do with those games, esp. when they are divisional and someone is getting the points, sometimes they both are.

What was the original purpose for that, isn't the idea to win, why reward points for it.

Before the shootout came along it went like this:

2 pts to winner in Reg
2 pts to winner in OT
1 pt each team for a tie
0 if you lost in reg or OT

Since the SO is supposed to eliminate ties, the points had to be redistributed.

Like I said, it's stupid.

I would like to see a 10 min 4 on 4 OT before going to a shootout. It would certainly make things a whole lot better.

Winner gets 2 pts, loser gets nothing. Or we do away with the point system. Winner wins, loser losses.

Yeah I agree. I'd like to see the Red Wings miss the playoffs, but I guess instead all I can hope for is a 1st round flameout.

But no OT just SO :)

I'd have to admit I love SO, they are really exciting, and I was lucky enough to be at a game that went into one. The energy in a shoot out cannot be described, haha.

I disagree. The SO has become far too common place now. OT hockey is the most exciting and 5 min of it doesn't do it justice. It's almost like a playoff type of atmosphere.

FTR I do like the shootout, just don't want to see so much of it.

I agree 10 min OT would be good. No TV timeouts like the playoffs. I do like that they got rid of two-line pass calls and tagup offsides as well as no change for defensive icings.

I remember what was it 2002 or 2003 when a Flyers-??? game went to 4 OT in the playoffs and I fell asleep watching it only to wake up and see the game was still going on. The thrill of OT playoff hockey is unmatched in any sport. But some have suggested that for playoff hockey a 3rd OT go 4 on 4 just to open up the ice and hopefully decide it without a 4th. I do agree that once you complete 3 OTs, that's 2 full games and should be enough hockey. The players are dying and have to come back 2 days later.

No touch icing would be a good rule to implement. It can cut back on players getting hurt.

That's an interesting idea, but I don't think it'll happen.

What I love about the playoffs though, is that it goes back to that Old Style of hockey. Defense, hard(er) hits.

Don, after the playoff spots are locked make a new NHL '08 playofff thread  We'll have predictions and screaming matches there.

Are you making the NHL Thread grandmaster? :D

We ususally keep the discussion in this thread, but sure why not.

We have no touch icing in our rec league, but then if they waited for us to go after it, too much extra time might come off the clock.:p Not to mention some rookie teams would get beaten back into their defensive zone every time and they wouldn't get the icing calls.

In the NHL, they are too good, and maybe 1 in 10 or 1 in 15 times the offensive player beats out the icing call, or it wraps the boards hard enough to come around the wing for the play on net. That's too high an occurrence for them to eliminate it. I do wish they would go back to more obstruction and interference calls. It seems like they cracked down and relaxed again. More flow, less clutch n grab. It does seem like the one thing I have noticed is since the lockout and the new rules and the refs being 'harder' with calls, that there are almost no cross-checking calls anymore, and I sure do see enough of it.
