But they (on the Galactica) said the atmosphere would crush her, so if she ejected, she would probably die.

Well, I've always been led to believe the inner pressure would explode you instantly in space, yet BSG gave the Tyrol family a few seconds leeway... so maybe Starbuck had a few seconds to be snatched by the Heavy Raider and end up sick but not dead. Also, she's in a pressure suit, which could buy her a little time. Not to mention, Raiders have jump drives: they could grab her just about instantly if they wanted to.

Lastly, I don't think she was at crush depth yet--she wasn't THAT far below Apollo, and maybe even higher than the Raider (which I think is real and Lee saw it) and it didn't seem like she imploded, it seemed like her Viper exploded from the damage it took. I think the damage to her windshield was the catalyst for her ship being torn apart. Now, her suit wouldn't have the same strength as her ship, but at least if the ship wasn't crushed, there's a chance she was high enough in the atmosphere to survive for a moment too.

Her being a Cylon certainly would explain her visions etc.--Cylons do seem to have quite the spiritual side--but it's not the only explanation.

But even if Leoben does rescue her physically... that doesn't mean she's NOT a Cylon :)

I can never find the music for the teaser that comes before the main title opening though.

Cool! A few music clips for my iTunes :)

I too wish there was a clip of the Cylon / Six music--that's pretty much the siganture theme of the show, more than the main title music.

And none of the clips are the middle-eastern style music (like the US titles used in the first season, and they still use all the time during the show). Oh, well, I can wait for the soundtrack album.

I also wish they had a loop of the CIC DRADIS sound. I want my computer to make that sound all the time :) Every sci-fi show has its ambient background sound, and that's the one that says "Galactica."

As a sidenote, the soundtracks for BSG s1 and s2 are incredible. Certain songs give me tingles every time, and not just because they remind me of moments in the show.

I see. At least they made her different. Water instead of chamalla.

So you can buy the soundtracks?

Both of Bear McCreary's soundtracks are on Amazon:

Season 1

Season 2

I haven't listened to the soundtrack for the miniseries. It's by someone else.

Thanks! Does either one have the "Cylon music"? I can't tell from the song titles--and that was in the miniseries too (wasn't it?) so maybe not.

EDIT: Yes--the Prologue. And the "Cylon music" is part of the first couple tracks of the miniseries soundtrack CD too--I'm listening to clips on Amazon but I'm not sure how to get a good link that's not tied to my account or session.

So there must be some overlap in the composers' work between the miniseries and the series.

I hope those 3 soundtracks come to iTunes.

I believe Prologue is actually an expansion by McCreary on Richard Gibbs's "number six theme," and in its current incarnation only appears in the regular series? I could be wrong though.

McCreary uses a lot of the miniseries compositions as foundations to elaborate on.

The space between life and death?

Have the first 3 soundtracks can't wait for the 4th. I love how they can have a stand out piece like "Prelude to War" aka "Pegasus vs. Galactica cliffhanger theme" use it in one episode then never visit it again. Although minor beats from it did show up in the resurrection ship episodes. I think the stand out piece this season is the main theme from the Passage aka "Kat's heroic death theme".
As for Starbuck's death? I say she's really dead. As in if we do see her alive again it won't be till the series finale which I am now convince is the end of season 4. People keep bringing up that shot of her hand reaching for the eject lever. That shot was the first one after she regained consciousness. The scene then goes on for another 3 minutes of Lee yelling at her to pull up and her finally telling him she's not affraid, to let her go, and she'll see him on the other side. The reach was just a reflex before finally accepting her fate, also Lee didn't aknowledge having a visual until Starbuck flew in behind the phantom raider. He only reacted when he sited Starbuck, but not the raider. Of course I could be wrong. Katie hasn't done any interviews titled "Life after Battlestar" yet. The final scene of this season could show her viper debris being spit out the eye of the storm on Jupiter in our solar system. The parts recoalesce, the cockpit lights up, Starbuck takes a look around and says "Frak me.", to be continued....
Starbuck is the death they where saying would happen this season. She is not the cylon reveal. I'm 90% certain I spoiled myself on that one as well as Baltar's fate. Who will find earth? I don't know, but Starbuck's death is supposed to be important not senseless. So I'm guessing it has something to do with her.

I think I'm going to pick up the soundtracks for these. Last time I looked, I could only find the soundtrack for the first season, but the song I really wanted was a strings theme that was either in season 2 or 2.5.

I do think she'll be gone for a while--probably not seen this season again, since the actress seems to think she's done with the show "as far as she knows." But season 4 won't air until early 2008, so things like re-hiring actors aren't necessarily done yet. And I think if she's alive, a big return like that would be done before the series finale. She'll be back for an extended run next year I predict. (And even before her "real" return we will likely have flashbacks and visions. Flashbacks are likely even THIS season.)

Starbuck's hand on the eject may be reflex, but it's a good one, and the fate she was accepting might be something other than death: she knew she was following a raider, and seemed pretty drawn to it without knowing why. There's no reason to think she took her hand OFF the lever in the following shots.

And the lever shot wasn't accident: it was shown on purpose. A lead-in to future revelations... OR a red herring! But intentional either way. (And if it's a red herring, I don't think it's merely meant to make people doubt her death--I think it's a sign she'll be back in SOME other way--like being a Cylon, or having her HUMAN mind transferred to a new Cylon model that looks like her, or something spiritual/supernatural.)

Likewise, I think the ambiguity over whether Apollo saw the Heavy Raider is intentional. But given the camera style of the show, and viewpoint (far from Kara) of that shot, my guess is that he did. But we're not supposed to be sure.

Hmm...discussion's gone cold here.

Well, let me just say then that I'm starting to lose patience with this show.

*Spoilers, duh*

I was really psyched about Baltar's trial, but "The Son Also Rises" just didn't do it for me. Watching Lee getting manipulated like that is a bit ridiculous. Having him on the defense hasn't been justified enough. Having a tribunal of captains where one of the judges has a son on the defense team is even greater of a stretch. You mean to tell me that they spent a year on New Caprica and didn't bother to work out a system to handle criminal trials?

Some nice moments (stealing Baltar's pen to manipulate Caprica Six was brilliant, not to mention all the mourning of Starbuck), but the artificial situation the two Adamas are in neuters their conflict somewhat.

Best part of last night, unfortunately, was the preview for next week. BSG Smackdown!

I'm not sure how I feel about this whole Starbuck thing. On the one hand, it takes guts to kill off one of your main characters, so I appreciate that bold move. But realistically, is she really gone? I would bet no. But if that's the case, then Ron Moore has just tied his own hands and might as well just come out and say that Starbuck is a Cylon - there is no other explanation if she comes back. Not sure how I feel about that.

I don't know, I guess it will make more sense (hopefully) once more about the Final 5 is revealed. Why are they special, what's this whole thing about an afterlife for the Cylons when in fact they are machines, and so forth.

Patience I guess...

They're really pushing the end-of-season fireworks to the end, aren't they? Even though this episode was heavy with foreshadowing and was meant to start an arc (a medium-term character like Lampkin is a clear sign), I don't really have a sense of things moving into place yet, or even gaining any kind of momentum. All the actors seem to be trying hard, though... a clear sign that we're supposed to pay extra attention to what's going on.

In a way, the long scenes and heavy dialog of the episode contributed to that; it makes me think that themes are being set up that will be relevant to whatever note the season ends on.

Lampkin kept my interest the whole way through... he was a fascination piece for the episode and really who the writer seemed to be interested in (rather than Adama). He [the writer] certainly spent a lot of script space making him mysterious and complicated. I'm glad they got another strong actor for the role.

The title, The Son Also Rises, does sort of beg whether any out-of-the-ordinary "rising" actually occurred. Lee has deviated from his father's "shadow" enough times already that it doesn't exactly feel like a pivot point for him, and to make it even more muddy he ends up being put back in his place at the end of the episode. Whether or not he bucks again aside, it's a weird place to end an episode about his supposed development. I wasn't sure what exactly he got out of his interactions with Lampkin anyway. That he would try to be "good, but not too good?" That he would try to figure out why people do the things they do, like Lampkin? Neither of those really seem right, but I felt the episode was trying to show that Lampkin taught him something. I wish I knew exactly what it was.

Without knowing, the conflict between the Adamas at the end, like bomberman said, feels awfully artificial. I cringed when Lee says something like, "you're afraid you'll see someone else at the other end of the table," and this seems to really piss Adama off. Why does this mean the end of the conversation for Bill? What does the fact that he won't order Adama to leave the board mean about him? It's so vague—all we get is that they're bitter about Starbuck, are taking it out on each other, and perhaps that Bill wants his son to stay a soldier so he can grow up to be like him. There's got to be something more, though, since being something other than a soldier is clearly not what this episode is about.

As you can see I'm chasing my own tail. I hope that's not what BSG's doing too.

wow natural color

Six is on Supernatural right now. Natural color!

I saw that and got the impression Bill Adama was remembering the same argument with his own father. Grandad Adama had actually ordered Bill not to join the military, Bill had done so anyway, and it had driven a permanent rift between them (which Lee knew about). There were a lot of references to Adama Snr. both in that episode and the one before. Could it be that the "Son" in the title isn't actually referring to Lee?

I guess the rest of it will be explained over the next couple of episodes. Hope so anyway.

But if that's the case, then Ron Moore has just tied his own hands and might as well just come out and say that Starbuck is a Cylon - there is no other explanation if she comes back. Not sure how I feel about that.
Tigh's the Cylon. Has to be. Who else would Deanna apologise to?

Tigh's the Cylon. Has to be. Who else would Deanna apologise to?

Starbuck would also fit the bill. They had run experiments on Caprica to try and impregnate her, and Deanna probably knew about Leoben holding her captive. I don't know that we'll find any of the people we're expecting to be Cylons. Hopefully we're all wrong and they come up with someone completely unexpected.

Who's a cylon?

It's killing me knowing or thinking I know and not saying anything. I'm 90% sure who it is from spoiler pics. Altough I think I saw my spoilery bit in the preview for Sunday's episode which means they could drag it out over 2 episodes. Anyways I don't want to say anything else about the Cylon reveal or Baltars fate because I've now gone from being 90% to 95% certain of these 2 plot points.
Who finds earth? I have no idea. But Starbuck is dead! and critics who have seen the finale say that was nothing! The cliffhanger is supposed to be "mind bending". I'm guessing no one finds earth. The fleet just finally reaches their destination. Of course the Cylon reveal and Baltars fate could be called mind-bending too. All these characters are suposed to have destinies. No where does it state that these destinies have to be fulfilled before they find earth. Earth could just be the begining for the characters. Earth would mean the end for the show though. I really think season 4 will be the final season as long as the episode count isn't in the teens. How can they have a movie between seasons 3 and 4 that doesn't address the cliffhanger? Meet and get to know the people of the 13th colony before season 4? Like I said I have no idea.
What I do know is:
NEWS FLASH! The Sunday, March 25, season finale of Battlestar Galactica will run five minutes longer than usual. If you plan on recording the episode, set your DVR or VCR to continue for five to 10 minutes after the end of the hour so you don't miss anything!

I don't know what is going to happen as I always make a point to never spoil things for myself (what fun is that?! ;)) so I am very much looking forward to the next 2 episodes...

Yes, perhaps Starbuck is truly dead, but if so, I would really like some more closure. She's at peace with herself - why? What was her destiny that her mother was preparing her for? Being a pilot, then killing herself when she realized... what exactly? How is that a destiny? Can someone explain this to me? She saw and painted the Eye of Jupiter as a child - again, so... what does this mean and how is this relevant whatsoever?!?

As for the other mysteries, I think it all ties into the "This has all happened before and will happen again" mantra. 13 Cylons. 13 colonies. Coincidence? Probably not. So, what if the Cylons we know are simply the latest generation of Cylons? The first generation of Cylons revolted on their makers as well (who were located on Kobol) and then formed the 13 colonies, one for each Cylon model. Then the Cylons created new Cylons over time (the Cylons we know today) which then revolted and wiped out their makers again, taking us to the beginning of the series. Everyone's a Cylon!!!! :p :D As a result, when they find Earth, they will just find Cylons living there. Maybe a bunch of Starbucks... ;)

And that would fulfill the teaser of "One will die, one will find out they are a Cylon and one will find Earth" - it's all the same person, Starbuck! :D

Just having some fun...

hehe

Lampkin's a Cylon... :p ;) :D

Romo's a quarterback... :p ;) :D

13 Cylons. 13 colonies. Coincidence? Probably not.
12 Cylons. 12 colonies. The 13th colony was thought lost, almost a myth until they went to Kobal. 13th Cylon model? Waiting for them on earth?
"This has all happened before and will happen again" The 13th colony also made a race of machines that rose up and nearly wiped out them out too. Now they are on the run trying to find the other 12 colonies. Series finale? The 2 groups run into each other enimies in tow. Cut to Adama saying frak. The end.

We have a new CAG. Couldn't have happened to a nicer guy.

Haha, I love it! ;) :D And yes ,I meant 12, don't know how I managed to type 13 twice incorrectly...

I cant believe it. The scene between the govenrment attorney and the presidents aid? The same exact issue is happening right now in washington d.c.

Good show. But not great.

Pluses: Watching Tigh lose it, watching Tory lose it, watching Laura Roslin maintain her dignity, watching Dee stamp her foot down (something that she hasn't done convincingly since Season 2's Home, part 1)

Minus: I still don't buy Lee's descent into the big vat of snake oil. At least everybody's giving him hell about it, but still...

Lots of awesome + one big black zit = good episode.

Wonder just how crazy next week will be...
