The Sun newspaper has reported that Tennant and Piper have signed on for Series 3 (Series 29), if this is true - this is great news.

But I wouldn't take the Sun's word for it, as they are known for making up stories. I'll wait for the BBC to make an announcement, they always do, to confirm this. Hope this is true!

Well, the BBC have confirmed it, so The Sun is actually right for once. They say on that story though that the start date for season 28 still hasn't been officially confirmed...

Well, Some of the media i.e. the Daily Mirror are saying Billie Piper is definitely leaving at the end of Series 2 and some i.e. the Sun are saying she's definitely staying on for Series 3...

So I don't know which to believe therefore I am waiting to see what the BBC are going to say whether Piper is leaving or staying for S3. I know the BBC has already confirmed that Tennant will do next series.

Cheers for the piccy wilmor42! :D

Well looks like Doctor Who has been holding steady ratings for Sci-Fi channel, me hoping they it will be successful enough so Sci-Fi will chip some money into the pot when the BBC make series 3.

I had initially heard that Tennant was signed on for 3 years from the get-go, however Piper's longevity was in question - it was rumored she wouldn't even be around for Season 28, which we now know is not the case. Past companions have lasted 2-3 years before though, so if she leaves after Season 28 it would be nothing too out of the ordinary.

That being said, the series has put a significant focus on Rose's family, more so than the series has ever done before for a companion, so they would have to put some thought into how they would exit her from the series and what they would do to fill in those character/story gaps as a result.

Regardless, can't wait - only a few more weeks! :D

Well, the BBC's Doctor Who homepage officially tells us Series 28 will start on Saturday 15 April at 7.15pm here in the UK. Hurrah! Unfortunately, this week the local cable provider has cut the TV service to our apartment building, and our screens are going to be blank for at least two months! I suppose I'd better start sweet-talking all my VCR-owning friends and relatives...

Great news, thanks Jaffa! (Not regarding your viewing situation of course! ;))

Since the CBC will not be showing the episodes at the same time as the BBC, I'll probably just rely on the torrents to keep me current. ;)

I can't believe it is almost upon us, it seems like we've been waiting for ages! :D

Fret not – we've invited ourselves around to Miss Jaffa Cake's parents for tea next Saturday, so we'll be enjoying the first episode on their 42" telly. :D

We just need to get a similar arrangement put in place for the World Cup, and we're sorted...

Yeah, I'm very much looking forward to the World Cup myself. I'm actually going to see if I can see the thing in person in 2010, as I've always wanted to go to Africa. Plus, my sister-in-law was born and raised in Johannesburg, so we'd have the best tour guide you could ask for!

Anyway, back on topic - looking forward to the first episode! :D

Sweet lord that was incredible. I love how they can make such a sci-fi comedy/drama thing and have those moments "they've never been touched" and the whole ending had me in tears. This is the greatest TV series I have ever seen.

Damn. Tonights episode was good. Mmmmmmmm Billie Piper.....fantastic rear bumper... :)

One thing I would say though, the new Doctor Who (including last series) it's totally made by the quality of the music, it's way above TV quality it's more like film music ...if you know what I mean.

I thoroughly enjoyed todays new episode called New Earth. I've avoid most of the spoilers and I'm rewarded with an episode where I didn't know what was going to happen and boy did it take me by surprise what the story was about. Well I know some of you lot haven't seen it so all I'll say is that the Cat Nuns were so good looking and I must hand it to the make-up department, I swear they could be real. I just loved the humour and the action! :D

Shame Outpost Gallifrey isn't embracing it. So far the community has given it a 4/5, which is quite common for RT Davis stories. Also the server has crashed so I can't post over there for now. :(

So ~Shard~, I presume you're busy bittorrenting? :p

Shame Outpost Gallifrey isn't embracing it.

I really enjoyed "New Earth" tonight, was really fun to watch. I am not easily disappointed like some people are.

I wouldn't lose any sleep about what Outpost Gallifrey's regulars think - after all they're mostly middle aged sad geeks who constantly nitpick and overanalyse over little unimportant things and are too busy complaining to be really enjoying what was shown.

Even though they sometimes moan how the new series doesn't match up to the old classic series though forgetting the fact Doctor Who is meant to be a family orientated show. Go and watch Star Trek for god's sake! Sheesh, some people...

Yea Doctor Who is meant to be an eccentric, enjoyable family show. Like Casualty or Noels House Party but with aliens and time travel.

Well, I for one enjoyed tonight's episode. I won't go too much into what happened to avoid spoiling it for our friends overseas who are probably bittorrenting the internet to within an inch of its life right now (no names mentioned, eh ~Shard~? ;)), but if tonight's installment is anything to go by we're in for some very good viewing over the next 13 weeks. Tennant's shaping up very nicely, IMHO.

Thanks for the consideration Jaffa Cake. ;)

For your information, I have grabbed the Doctor Who Confidential and the Audio Commentary track for episode 1, and am 2 hours away from having the episode itself. I will definitely share my comments once I have viewed this masterpiece! ;) :D

I thought that it was weak - dull, flawed plot and some terrible CGI that would have suited red dwarf better than a 2006 flagship show. I like tennant as dr who and billie piper got some good lines (just not as rose). I thought next week's looked dodgy too. I want to like this series but if they're all like that it's going to be difficult.

Well, what can I say, I thoroughly enjoyed the first episode of the new season! And I guess although that may not come as a big surprise since I am a huge fan and all, I think in some ways, being as big a fan as I am, I am almost more critical and demanding of the series than someone might normally be. ;)

I thought everything was great in general. I guess my only complaint would be that it was too short! I think this is a story-line they really could have stretched into 2 episodes, as some of the plot elements seemed a bit rushed, and not explored as much as they could have been. It seemed like there was a lot going on, and a lot of potential to expand on things further.

Of course, maybe I'm just biased as well, since I prefer the old serial format, which to me made the stories seem a little more epic and involved. ;) I always seemed to get attached more, and deeper into the stories, characters and enviorments when I was watching an entire week's worth of episodes, even if they were only half an hour a piece... ;)

And I don't know what it was, but I do agree that the CGI, especially the spaceships at the start, did seem quite sub-par. Ah well, great special effects do not make a great story. ;)

Regardless, as I said, I really enjoyed the episode (which is all that counts!) and am looking forward to next week. (And sometime in the future seeing the Face of Boh for a third (and final!) time to learn what secret he is going to share with The Doctor.)

Shard's Rating for 'New Earth': 7.5/10

We certainly enjoyed it in our house. It's the one programme that we sit down and watch as a family.

As I think the 'classic' series proved nearly every week... ;)

The signs are that this series is going to be darker than the last, and I think this episode was a bit of a light-hearted romp to get us into the new run, reacquaint us with the characters and properly introduce Tennant as the Doctor (he spent much of his first adventure asleep, after all).

And of course it seems we'll be seeing The Face of Boe again at some point and his great secret will finally be revealed, no doubt with all kinds of Bad Wolfish shenanigans. Maybe he'll reveal the secret of his infamous longevity, now that the good Doctor only has a couple of regenerations left... ;)

Glad as heck Sci Fi is running the new series in the states, it was great seeing the daleck and how Billie had that creature eating out of her hand:D Even octopuss like Aliens like poontang:D Exterminate! LOL

Totally agree. Just watching through the Pertwee series again and their blatant abuse of blue screen technology. ;) The SFX weren't the best, but it just didn;t matter. :)

I agree - and I welcome a "darker" Doctor Who, with a bit more edge to it. Looking forward to the rest of the season.

Quite true! Technically he has 3 regenerations left, right? A Timelord has 12 in total I believe, which means that technically the 13th Doctor would be the last one. And didn't we already see him as the Valeyard? Ah well, it doesn't matter, time is all relative, and if the Master can cheat on his regenerations then so can the Doctor... ;) :D

The Valeyard wasn't actually the Doctor, exactly – he was created from the darker aspects of the Doctor's personality, between his twelfth and thirteenth incarnations. So we still officially have three proper Doctors left before the writers have to come up with some plot device to give him a few more regenerations. ;)

Actually, the question's raised on the BBC's Doctor Who FAQ page...

How many regenerations does the Doctor have?
Now that his people are gone, who knows?

...so there you go! :D
