The SCI-FI channel here in the US started showing the first season last week.Being an old Dr. Who fan it took some getting used to but I like it..
I can't believe I missed almost a month's Dr Whos before I caught Friday's episode (the Dalek one).

I agree it's going to take some getting used to. I think I preferred the slower paced 4x30minute stories over one hour long episodes. Having to wait a week before the story progressed made for some exciting TV viewing when I was a kid.

I found the acting a bit over-the-top and manic (but that might be in the spirit of Dr Who ... I haven't seen any of the older episodes for years), and the music at dramatic moments was very distracting. But I'll keep watching. And the good news is, my wife had never seen Dr Who before and liked it.

Nothing can replace Tom Baker though!!
I think I saw most episodes from Jon Pertwee's days, then Tom Baker and right through to Peter Davidson, and yes, nothing beats Tom Baker ... but Jon Pertwee comes a close second, although he had the help of UNIT and the Brigadier.

Did I miss the Sarah Jane comeback?

Actually, the question's raised on the BBC's Doctor Who FAQ page...

How many regenerations does the Doctor have?
Now that his people are gone, who knows?

...so there you go! :D

Ooh, I like that.

Bill Gates in the 1960's: 13 regenerations should be enough for anyone!

The Valeyard wasn't actually the Doctor, exactly – he was created from the darker aspects of the Doctor's personality, between his twelfth and thirteenth incarnations. So we still officially have three proper Doctors left before the writers have to come up with some plot device to give him a few more regenerations. ;)

Ah yes, I remember that now. Good to know. :)

Haha - that's pretty good, actually - who says the Doctor has to obey the Timelords' rules anymore since there aren't any left? ;) :D That being said, I'd be surprised if one other specific Timelord didn't survive, and will pop up in a future season... ;)

If you're thinking of who I'm thinking of, then he was absorbed into the TARDIS at the end of the dodgy TV Movie – so it's entirely possible (and likely) he survived the destruction of Gallifrey along with the Doctor.

Actually, while reading that link this snippet caught my eye...

"Russell T. Davies has said that he thinks the Master may return, but it would take a writer who can do it properly."

...so there you go again! :D

Yep, no surprise! Let's just hope that when they do it, they decide to do it right...

Getting back to regenerations, I think it's interesting the producers decided to explicitly state that CE was the 9th Doctor, when technically they could have left it up in the air. Was he the 9th? 10th? 13th? How about, as a twist, the 1st? Who ever said Hartnell was the 1st Doctor anyway? (Although I think it has been essentially agreed to in the Doctor Who community and "Whovian lore". ;)) Of course with the Autons in the first CE episode and the return of Sarah Jane and K-9 this season, that nixes that possibility, but still, it would have been a neat angle... ;)

Of course, the problem with having the 'new' Doctor as the first is that you're very, very limited when it comes to future regenerations – especially if the man in the leading role decides to jump TARDIS after only one series *cough* Chris Ecclestone *cough* :D

Very true - you would have to "post-date" McGann as the 13th Doctor (at the latest to be safe), making Hartnell the 6th Doctor, Tennant the 2nd, and only leaving room for 3 more Doctors! ;) Unless of course some time streams somehow got crossed and changed everything... 'cause you know that's never happened before.... :D

I think I read that Tennant is signed on for 3 seasons at least, so we shouldn't have to worry about the "13 regenerations" issue for quite some time... :)

And yes I realize I'm a big frickin' Doctor Who geek.

All the Doctor needs to do to achieve that is to reverse the polarity of the neutron flow – piece of cake. ;)

Hahaha - nice one! Ah, it's sad that I get that joke and the "joke behind the joke" as well... ;) :D

And I don't know what it was, but I do agree that the CGI, especially the spaceships at the start, did seem quite sub-par. Ah well, great special effects do not make a great story. ;)

As a Film Student, I'd say that when making a programme, one should always aim for the highest standards possible - that goes for writing, direction and CGI....

This is the BBC for cryin out loud!

(slight spoiler warning)

There was one shot that made me shout at my computer screen - when the doctor and rose were climbing up the lift shaft, and the infected person grabbed that cat and threw her down the shaft - there was actually a shot MISSING between the cat being grabbed, and her falling down the hole - you never saw her go over.

I thought it was realllllly cheap, but hey. Things like that spoil it for people like me, I guess - but overall i did enjoy the episode :)

Mouse, Flash and Photoshop. Though I usually try and avoid that combination these days. Just Flash is always so obvious, I tried a new technique with altering line thickness to try and hide that. yea :) Took about 4 hours though! I wanted a pic of The Doctor infront of a lot of carnage in a cityscape originally but that would have taken forever and a day.

And thanks :)

oh definitely! I'm mulling stuff over :)

I'm thinking about doing an Eccleston pic today.

The secret's out!

Just a heads up (particularly to Shard!)

the Face of Boe's secret has already been revealed apparently, or so my nephew tells me. He loves the series with a passion (as do I) and he says it's revealed it's in a story in this year's Doctor Who annual.

It's just four words. And I suspect it may have important ramifications.

I'll say no more for fear of spoiling.... but if anyone wants to know, happy to PM.

Ah... I had heard that RTD had said it was just four words, so nice one.

Four words. Just four words. Maybe...

"She does look tired."

:p

Like it. Like it a lot. :)

But it's not right, as Roy Walker may have said on Catchphrase.

To heighten the mystery - and I may be wrong, as this is complete guess on my part - I sense we may hear the secret before the forthcoming episode 12, given its title....

And now I'll definitely say no more, as I'm in danger of spoiling. Sorry all....

Ooooooooooo!!!! I SO can't wait for tomorrows episode!!! By the looks of the trailer it looks like it's got martial arts, Queen Victoria, a werewolf and Billie! What more can a man ask for?

Anyway about last weeks episode, I gave it a second watch and I still love it. What really strikes me is first the quotability of the episode! So much great humour crammed in. :D Second is David Tennant, there's something about his character that is very appealing, it's that air of cool and style. That said I still love Chris, northerner forever! ;) Third, Rose's cleavage! OMG watching it a second time, that was all I could notice!

Mind you, yeah I think the CGI was pretty dodgy (keeping with tradition it seems), in this case more dodgy then usual mainly due to the flying cars which were kinda plastic like and not super imposed that well. Then the cat nun falling down the shaft.... That said, what Doctor Who doesn't do well in CGI, they make up for in make-up, set design and atmosphere! The cat nuns were excellent visually and the sets were really well made.

As for Outpost Gallifrey, I would like to stress that the sad miserable fans only make up a minority of the forum, the mood has pretty much lightened up and the positive aspects of the episode are shining out. Ah well a 4/5 rating is still good. More importantly the Uk population tuned in their droves at around 8 million viewers with one of the highest apprication ratings for the new series at around 80. Things are looking good for a commissioning of series 4! :D

Very interesting, thanks for the head's up ClaphamChris! If you wouldn't mind, PM me the spolier and that way I can torture myself over whether I should open it and read it or not. What can I say, I'm a glutton for punishment...

Spoiled? Not really

Shard

PM'd you.

On reflection, it's probably not a desperate spoiler, more a thought provoker. I don't thinkknowing will desperately spoil the experience.

But I've put a load of returns in before the secret.... just to give you another chance to agonise even more!

All the best

What more could you ask for? How about monk-type fellas doing martial arts?! :p That's what the trailer suggested we'd be seeing, in any case. Very much looking forward to it, as you say it should be a good 'un.

Surely it's not...

[best Vader voice]I am your father![/best Vader voice]

...after all, the Doctor has had his hand cut off in a swordfight, so maybe RTD is giving the Doctor the full Luke Skywalker treatment? ;)

And yes, not so much a spoiler, as something to ponder and get the wheels turning... :D

Are you implying that the Face of Boh is the Doctor's father just as Vader is Luke's father and being evil as Vader is this therefore means that the Face of Boh is actually evil and is therefore the Master who escaped the Time War by stealing the original Face of Boh's face and that the Master is the Doctor's father?

:D
