Does the doctor always change face..how often or they just play it off like the new actor was always the doc?

In terms of plot, the doctor can "regenerate" his body when near death. He looks the same and acts slightly differently but he's still the same character with the same memories, abilities etc. The other characters and the doctor recognise that he has changed physical, though he is the same person.

There's no set point to when the regeneration happens, usually when the lead actor wants to leave or is forced to leave.

And Time Lords have 12 regenerations, which the Doctor is rapidly coming up on.

Although, as the Master has shown, that's not a problem that's entirely incapable of being overcome. :)

The Doctor is a Timelord, and, according to the "rules" Timelords are given 12 regenerations. So, instead of dying, the Doctor just regenerates into a new body. He is still the Doctor, but his appearance and personality changes, and yes, this is obvious to whomever encounters him. It's sort of their race's way of cheating death. ;) So far there have been 10 Doctors, with the first Doctor starting off in 1963 and so forth. Doctors usually last 3-4 years before regenerating, however there are exceptions like the 4th Doctor (7 years) and the 9th Doctor (1 year).

Any other questions, just ask away! :)

Sorry for cross posting this...

Some of you may have noticed that Outpost Gallifrey (the MacRumors of the Doctor Who world) has closed it's news page:

http://www.gallifreyone.com/index.php

The guy who ran it didn't have the effort and I guess didn't want to share. I'm thinking of putting together a simple Who News blog (probably with Wordsmith) and am looking for some people to help out. You don't have to be a massive Who fan or have a lot of web knowledge. Any and all hosting costs will be cover by myself. Anyone who would like to be a contributor, do some design or has any interest please PM me.

Great idea Sky Blue. I'd love to contribute myself, but in all honestly I am just too busy right now - MacRumors is about the only thing along those lines which I have time for at the moment. ;) But keep us updated on it and if I can contribute now and then, I'd definitely be willing to.

Just in case anyone is interested, there is now a separate thread for Torchwood here. I haven't watched the first couple episodes myself yet, but have acquired them for future viewing. ;)

You acquired them, too? :) The sex scene in episode 2, I have never seen on Canadian TV. Too raunchy, I suppose.

I have to say that David Tennant is one-excellent-Doctor

Which is saying something because I'm a fan of Tom Baker - and have been around since seeing him first-run.

Yeah, T. Baker is still my favorite as well, but after the performance that CE put on, I had my doubts about Tennant. Even with the Xmas Special (almost a year ago already, wow!) it was tough to judge, since he was going through his regeneration and all. But once things got on track with the start of the actual season, yeah, I liked what I saw from him.

It seems like ages since Season 28 ended though - I can't wait for the Xmas Special in less than a couple months, and then I'll have to be patient again until March for Season 29... ;) In the meantime I guess I will attempt to somewhat satisfy my impatience with Torchwood.

I'm actually really enjoying Torchwood. I'm not sure it has the staying power and versatility that Doctor Who has, but it is quality entertainment nonetheless.

I'm really really disapointed with Torchwood. Urgh.
Can't say I'm disappointed, more grateful actually. It's a new spin-off series, so it has growing pains. Think Hartnell Doctor Who and how awful it was..heh, or Seinfeld. It took them awhile to get into their stride.

I like Torchwood simply because it's so graphic and there already has been a woman-woman and man-man kiss scenes. :)

A little something I spotted on the BBC site to breathe a little life back into this thread before we sit down to enjoy the upcoming Christmas Special. Apparently, the bestest, greatest Doctor there ever was is...

David Tennant

Fancy that, eh? They've had a vote and everything, so I suppose it's all official... :p

I still prefer Christopher E. He brought a dramatic, weighty presence that seems lost on Tennant.

"Readers also voted Billie Piper as their favourite Doctor Who assistant, in the role of Rose Tyler." I didn't like her at first, but she grew on me by the third episode, and scenes with her mum, especially some of them made me cry a lot. I can relate so much with her.

She had a very touching farewell scene, definitely right up there with the best of farewell scenes in TV land.

It does strike me a little as being like those '100 greatest songs of all time'-type polls, where recent stuff gets voted higher than it maybe should do, for the simple reason that it's fresh in people's minds and all that.

Tennant is good and on the whole I've enjoyed his performances – but the best Doctor ever? Better than (Tom) Baker? Controversial... ;)

Talk about an unscientific poll... :p ;) Why do they even run polls like this? It’s obvious that people will vote for the new Doctor, as for many of them that’s the only Doctor (along with CE) that they’ve ever known! And CE took 3rd… Oh, and Billie Piper was voted the best companion? Again, what a surprise. ;) How much do you want to bet that the majority of the voters have never even heard of Adric, Jamie, Vickie, etc.? Of course they’re going to vote for Billie! The only reason Sarah Jane came in second (not saying she doesn’t deserve it mind you) was probably because she was featured in this past season. McCoy was once ranked higher than Baker as well and it was in 1990, shortly after his run ended – I think this is more of the same, i.e. let’s vote for the most recent guy.

Yeah, I think these results are definitely a little skewed, but it’s all good I guess… ;) To call DT the greatest Doctor ever though, and only after 1 season is a bit much IMO. Run this poll again in 10 years and we’ll see how the results come out.

Long live Tom Baker!!! :D

So, verdicts on the Christmas special? Didn't much like it myself, and I hope it doesn't signal a new trend. Is the Doctor really going to spend every Christmas on Earth? An episode broadcast at Christmas is fine, but you can only use the dangerous christmas tree gag a few times before it gets old.

I liked the Christmas Special in that it actually turned an actress I can't stand (Tate) into a very good character. Loved the whole centre of the earth thing going for it, and the star-ship (hah) that slowly inched towards earth was oh-so creepy. It was nice seeing him going solo too, in a way.

Watched it with my new speakers turned up too :D lovely stuff! I keep forgetting how great the sound production values are in this show.

As for the upcoming trailer bit (in white!) - they're back! But we always knew that. When you're playing with time nothing truly dies I suppose. Gotta love them Daleks.

I didn't mind it for what it was. If nothing else it reminded me how much better it is than Torchwood, which I've been stuck watching the past few months. ;) I agree that the whole premise of the Doctor spending Xmas on Earth is a bit much, however I suppose he must have done it in the past numerous times (i.e. during the Pertwee years) - it's just that nothing eventful obviously happened those years... ;)

The episode on the whole was nothing amazing, but it was good IMO and I enjoyed watching it. I guess we'll see what Season 3 brings, but I sure hope every episode isn't set on near-present day Earth. :( I didn't mind it with Pertwee and UNIT back in the good old days, but last season it really started frustrating me...

Did anyone watch the Doctor Who Cardiff Concert as well? Being a classical musician it was fun to watch and listen to. :)
