I don't know this actor well enough to know whether this is a good thing or not - I guess all I can comment on are my feelings towards what this means in general - and I still have to sort out exactly what those feelings are! ;) :D

Your thoughts Jaffa?

On the spoiler (in white):

Spoiler...My main objection is about the "man" purportedly cast to play X, whilst he's a goodish actor the fact is he's the English version of Michael J Fox, now imagine Michael playing the character X, as for it being too early for the re-emergence of X I agree and RTD would make a silly "camp" version of X as the actor concerned doesn't have the gravitas to play him (Imho) Link

I agree with your thoughts as well... I just don't know if it's the right time for X to return. At this stage it's almost as if RTD is doing it "just because". Now, if the storyline and so forth is well thought out and well done, sure, that's fine, but even with the whole Sarah Jane thing, although it was nice and well-written, it did seem a bit artificial in a way, like RTD saying, "Hey, let's bring back an old companion!" X is such a great character with such a history and such a great story to tell (presumably what with the Time War and all as well) that I don't know if RTD & Co. can honestly do it justice at this point in time.

As I said, it seems artificial to me, but I guess proper judgment won't be able to be formed until we know the circumstances and so forth of his return. I have my concerns though, as this unfortunately seems like one of those "gimmicks", like bringing back Sarah Jane and K-9, having the Daleks and the Cybermen fight, etc. - it just all rings of "Alien versus Predator" such that someone thinks it's what the fans want so they go out of their way, rightly or wrongly, and whether they have a good story or not, to appease the masses (or RTD's childhood fantasies such as "Oooh, I want to bring X back! That would be so cool!")

Don't get me wrong, I ultimately want to see X back as well and think it will be cool, but in this manner and what with the timing, well, as I said I have my concerns. I guess we'll see...

My thoughts...

I read in my parent's paper yesterday that he and another this chap are currently battling it out for the role – in fact, the rumour's mentioned in the link.

I'm unsure about how I feel about it, really. If handled properly it could be fantastic, if they don't get the casting and story right it's going to be a huge disappointment. I'm hoping that if it is true they go for a charmingly manipulative character rather than the pantomime camp evil we've had inflicted on us in the past.

Given that we must only be a few months away from the new series airing though, surely it's too late to be casting an actor to play the part? If it is true, then perhaps you-know-who won't be showing his face until the series after, or maybe this year's Christmas Special at the earliest? It has to be said too that the revelation in ~Shard's~ link isn't a direct quote from the actor himself, so there is the possibility that the reporter could perhaps just be repeating a duff rumour from another source.

As another little tit-bit to throw out there... there have been some rumours that Tennant will be leaving in the middle of the series-after-next, and that the two gentlemen we're discussing are actually up for the part of the Eleventh Doctor. Either that or the Rani. :D

A little further piece of information on the recent discussion (blanked out so as not to spoil...)

We were watching Soccer AM this morning and among the guests were three cast members of the BBC's other popular time travel series Life on Mars – the main role of which is of course played by John Simms. When asked why John couldn't be there with them this morning, his co-stars said he was "filming up north somewhere for Doctor Who". They continued to say that he was playing a baddie, at which point one of them chipped in and said he'd been cast as the Master...

Hmm – either the cat's been let out the bag or they were having a wind up. They did look a little sheepish afterwards, though. :D

Interesting info, thanks Jaffa. With all this talk, I have just had an epiphany:

The rumor of these actors being considered for the role of the Master is correct - and so is the rumor of them being up for the role of the Eleventh Doctor. Mid-way through the next season Tennant will step down to one of these actors who will take over - however it will be as the Master, and the series will become all dark and dystopian a la Battlestar Galactica with the new main character of the show being the Master, not the Doctor!

:p ;) :D

Seeing as how we all loves us some Doctor Who, and seeing as how we all loves us some Macs, I thought you all might find this of interest.

The Iconfactory today released a set of Doctor Who icons to give your Mac a Time Lord-style makeover – the set has eight icons from the new and old versions of Who, including a nice Tardis that'll make an ideal replacement icon for Time Machine once Leopard is released.

Hah! These rock! I already had a Tardis icon, so this just adds to the set! Great find!

Just saw them filming

I had business meeting this morning in Cardiff bay
When i came out i noticed lots of trucks outside the millennium centre
Yes they were filming, David Tennant wasn't there but Captain Jack was and so was the Tardis

:D

March 31 is the date for the start of the next season - can't wait! :D

Does anyone know if it is a 2-parters, or if they are showing 2 episodes back to back? Both "Smith and Jones" and "The Shakespeare Code" are currently listed for airing on the 31st, so I was curious. Following that we have:

Daleks in Manhattan
The Lazarus Experiment
42
Family Of Blood
Utopia

Indeed – the trailers have already started showing over here.

At the moment though they're just saying 'coming soon', so I can't tell you if the first two episodes are going to be shown on the 31st or if it'll just be the one that's aired. As far as I'm aware though 'Smith and Jones' and 'The Shakespeare Code' are stand-alones and not a two-parter.

But I will admit that I'm starting to get quite excited about the new series. :D

Very cool. And yes, although I wasn't too caught up in it a while ago and was fine with waiting as long as it takes, I am starting to get excited as well. ;) :D

Is anyone else as nervous about this coming season as I am?

I have found some of the past two seasons to have really good stories, but (roughly) 75% of Russel T Davis episodes have been trash...

I don't know... Putting in a dalek episode every season will help run the series into the ground... Feed someone too much, they'll get full... Cram more down their throat, they get sick and... well... I'll keep the rest of the post clean :p

Just my 2 cents...

I seem to remember reading that the BBC has secured the rights to use the Daleks for three series... the issue being that they don't actually own the rights to them, they reside with their creator Terry Nation (or at least his estate). So I suppose they're trying to get their money's worth out of the deal, and it might be the case that we don't see them return for a while after this upcoming series.

I'm waiting to see how they're handled in the upcoming story – if it is just Sec who's returned (and possibly just the other three members of the Cult of Skaro) then it might not be that bad. I think the Daleks work better when there's a handful of them and the Doctor is able to interact with them one-on-one as it where – when there's a massed army of the metal blighters it lessens their impact in my opinion.

But I agree that it would be nice to see some other villains featured – be they new creations or some updated versions of some classic (and perhaps a bit lesser known) monsters.

Ya, I know Terry Nation is pretty... tight about that kind of thing. Didn't know they had the 3 year deal. That makes me feel a little better :)

I'm hoping for Ice Warriors, personally... The audio program with them was excellent!

Yeah, a little bit. Obviously I want it to be a great season, but I do have a bit of concern over whether it will be or not...

I agree, you can beat a good thing to death, however keep in mind that there were Dalek stories in pretty much every season of the classic series as well - each Doctor ran into them at least twice I believe throughout their tenure, except for the latter ones - same with the Cybermen. Hmm, somewhat off topic, but did Pertwee ever encounter the Cybermen??? I know for a fact that every other Doctor has, but for the life of me I cannot recall a Pertwee epiosde with them... hmmm...

I think some of the nervousness has to deal with the new companion as well - whether she is good or not will obviously have a huge impact on the season.

Earlier on the dalek episodes were far more milked. However, the average is significantly less than one per season. The quantity of their stories declined after somewhat of an indulgence during the 3rd Doctor's tenure. The 4th Doctor did indeed have two dalek episodes, but that's quite spare considering the number of stories he has, and from then on the daleks tend to be treated as something more special. Davison has one, C.Baker has one, and Sylv has one.

You're right, however, that the 3rd Doc has no cyberman episodes. I like to think this is because they were heavily drawn upon with the 2nd Doctor.

...

I'm pretty resigned about the 3rd season of New Who. The show's new incarnation is so hyperactive, and the new stories so illogical, that I only bear them because of brand loyalty. Perhaps with RTD's pet Rose out of the way, things will even out a little.

Yes, you are correct. It is somewhat hard to compare though since there were technicaly only 4 stories (or whatever) per season back when the show was in serial format. Regardless, it is almost like they're becoming a token adversary (i.e. they appear in every season!) in the new series which isn't a good thing.

Yeah, that's true - Day of the Daleks was pretty weak as I recall and the Master was working with them for almost an entire season IIRC...

Only 2, in his 7 year reign? Wow, seemed like more, especially with Davros and all. Genesis of the Daleks was sweet....

Davison has one

And what a one! I think Resurrection of the Daleks holds the record for the story of Doctor Who with the highest body count. There was a lot of death in that one.... :D

Thought so... And yeah, that makes sense wrt the 2nd Doctor...

Well said - I don't know if I'd watch as fanatically if it wasn't "Doctor Who". That being said, once a Whovian always a Whovian and I'm quite content being that way. ;) :)

Hmm, I couldn't agree with that. The only episodes of his that I didn't care for that much were Aliens of London/World War III from the first of the new series. The rest have ranged from OK to really good. My two least favorite from the second series (The Idiot's Lantern and Fear Her) were written by others.

Overall, I've liked the new episodes way more than, say, the Sylvester McCoy era. I saw Silver Nemesis again somewhat recently...blargh....

Ok... I'm curious (i'm not going through 45 pages of this thread, so sorry if its been brought up)...

Love and monsters...

Love or hate it? You know, the one with the cement brick of a girlfriend at the end...
