Nice to finally have a future/alien planet episode. I always think they are so much more interesting than the past and present episodes. Best one this series.

Much much better. I like the social conscience aspect of it too. "Where do you think your clothes come from?" Nice one RTD :)

I agree, although the present ones are still mildly amusing too.

The Future ones are just the best though.

I think this one was rather good, I just think Catherine Tate was rather annoying. Not because her character had bad lines or was written badly, but she does have one of those clumsy voices (in this) that kinda ruins the mood.

However, I was pleasantly surprised at the way they went to a time that wasn't just a follow on from the last Ood episode, because I was expecting it to be another sequel, like the Slitheen ones in series 1.

let's hope next week's one is good. Nice to see anther resurrection of old Who monsters :D I was worried it was going to be crappy J'doon -or whatever- again :p

Sea Devils next, please :)

Oh and with the whole "Doctor, your song will end soon" thing is just like the Rose "I sense a parting" thing going on in series 2. I have a feeling it relates to how David Tennant will be taking a break for Doctor Who for a year... either that or he will regenerate again (Hope not!). Obviously the Doctor won't die because he's portrayed as immortal, and is also getting the BBC a lot of money :p

Still don't think Catherine Tate comes anywhere near to matching the genius of David Tennant, though.

Nice to have an episode without slow-moving enemies, too :)

I thought that ep was ruddy brilliant. I wasn't too well throughout it so I'll be watching it again when I'm better. Don't really know what else to say. Love the Ood, when the first one got them red eyes it made me jump just a bit!

There's something going on with the music too. I've noticed that Series 4 is using a lot of repeated melodies. If you have the series 3 OST put "All the strange, strange creatures" on. It's the trailer music for 4 but it can be heard in bits throughout episodes. That and this episode had a focus on singing.

Oddly enough they haven't used the Face of Boe style "slidey widey" effect yet.

And did anyone else think it was just a bit too much like Metroid, what with the "mother brain" like creature and all. Creatures being altered to work for humans with disaster striking a space colony.

Oh and also "end of the world" shift?

What the ood actually said to rose was that she would die in battle soon. The Ood are technically correct because Rose Tyler was listed as one of the dead at the battle of Canary Wharf but we know she is alive, so it could just point to a regeneration.

What the ood actually said to rose was that she would die in battle soon...
Wasn't it the devil chap that said that to Rose though, albeit using the Ood as a mouthpiece?

...it could just point to a regeneration.
I'd suggest not, given the fact that Tennant is signed on for a while yet – unless that's a bit of a fib? ;)

It could have a few meanings...

...my guess is maybe that it's to do with the return of Rose, the Doctor's song being one of loneliness after she got alternative-universed. This fits with the Ood song being one of misery and separation, it wasn't a song of death.

The return of the Time Lords could also be another possibility, as this fits too – his woe and guilt at his separation from his own people.

I had a bit of a restless night, one of those ones where your mind just doesn't switch off and goes through any number of random subjects. However, one thing during this mild delirium phase related to Doctor Who popped into my head which appears to me to make sense...

Rose being back from the alternate universe is down to the last Dalek, who has recreated the link in order to pull the alternate Skaro through to our universe. In the alternate Skaro, the Kaleds and Thals never fought their war which resulted in the creation of the Daleks, however the wheelchair-bound Davros is still their lead scientist. When the last Dalek meets Davros, he is convinced again to mutate the Kaleds to create a new legion of genetically pure Daleks, which in the absence of the Time Lords will rule both realities.

In order to pull the alternate Skaro through the void, the mass between the universes must be altered to make the alternate one mass-heavy, therefore the last Dalek is destroying planets in our universe and pushing the resulting matter through the link to create the right conditions. And because the link itself is located between our Earth and the alternate one, getting it to the right size to bring a planet through will destroy both Earths in the process. Although doing so is changing history on the alternate Earth, possibly even getting rid of Pete again (hence Rose looking so miserable), Rose, Jackie and Mickey are completely aware of the changes as they occur because they aren't from that reality and have come to gain help in stopping it.

Phew. Sound plausible?

As Jaffa pointed out, the Ood themselves did not predict Rose's future, it was the "devil chap" speaking through them. ;) As for the end of The Doctor's songs, I like Jaffa's thoughts, but I'd throw regeneration in there as well as a possibility. I thought that it was quasi-public knowledge that this is the last full season of the series for a couple years, as next year there will only be 4 or 5 specials (including the Xmas Special) at the end of which Tennant will most likely regenerate. It obviously hasn't been confirmed yet, but it definitely makes sense to me and I've heard it a few times now.

As for this episode specifically, I quite enjoyed it! Next week brings us the return of Martha so we'll see how that plays out... ;)

Phew. Sound plausible?
Possibly, nice theory. I was thinking something a little similar myself...

...in so far as the disappearing planets is the work of the void Daleks, who we know are going to be back at some point this series. They're marooned there, unable to get out... after several failed attempts they abandoned their plans of escape and instead found a way to bring stuff from our universe into the void, building a new Dalek empire in there one world at a time.

The Doctor will no doubt sally forth on a daring mission into the void to save the day, barely in the nick of time to save modern day London from being sucked in there. :)

funny thing is this year is reminding me of series 1
Donna's responses to alien situations seem quite like Rose in the first series
and all the cryptic statement thing remind me of the "Bad wolf" mystery,
which also through up some wild theories at the time.

so far so good, but the first two-parter of the run is usually where the wheels come off!

I did wonder about the ending though. Surely a genius like The Doctor could work out that some sort of metal object capable of smashing glass may be in order

Sometimes, people are so damn smart that they don't realise the most obvious solution... ;)

On the subject of the sonic screwdriver though, is it just me or in recent episodes have we been seeing more and more instances where it's proved useless? It makes a bit of a refreshing change from it being a catch-all solution to any problem that hampers the Doctor.

Just watched The Sontaran Stratagem. I have to say, I think this is so far the best episode of the season to date. While I have enjoyed the three that have come so far, I think this one has been the most interesting to me. I like the Sontarans from back in the day, so seeing them again is nice. Even more than that, this episode had some sparkling dialogue for David Tennant and the others in the cast (though Martha's "I'm bringing you back to earth" line made me cringe a bit). It is good to see Martha again, and while the new commander of UNIT is no Brigadier, he did have a couple of good moments. I will be interested to see how this story plays out in the next episode.

solid episode well put together
and managed to avoid any unintentional humour always a possibility when the Sontarans are around
although they did seem a bit pi$$ed off they didn't get to be a part of The Time War, maybe there was a minimum height requirement to join in.

overall this series is shaping up pretty well
...so far

Phew. Sound plausible?

That sounds FANTASTIC but since R.T.Davies would write an episode like that, I have strong doubts that he would write anything that good (He's the weakest writer out of them all, in my opinion). While it's good he brought back Doctor Who, I just don't think he's doing it right.

I agree, but Catherine Tate is rather annoying... Also the fact they're trying to turn every companion's life into some sort of Sci-Fi Soap Opera... and the whole "Oh I saw you before at Christmas!" thing is almost as bad as the whole Martha "My cousin - who was very similar looking to me (Identical infact) - was working in Torchwood" thing to make some lame excuse about using the same actor twice. While the Grandpa thing with Donna is a bit more realistic, it's still making emphasis on something that would be best left off unmentioned... and before you say "Maybe they wrote his character to be like that", they didn't. It said on Doctor Who Confidential that the original actor who was going to be Donna's father died before filming so they couldn't include his character (out of respect). Just little things ruining the series. Probably R.T.Davies' fault. (Yeah, you can tell I don't really like him :p)

yes but if you don't include explanations of details like that, you get people whining on messages boards about poor continuity,
you really can't win with Dr Who fans.

It's not like "Commander Maxil" ever induced much in the way of whining. I think that generally people understand, or forget, when an actor is reused, much like they do when the same actor appears in different TV shows or movies.

Ha! Oh, he was the pompous and irritating head of the Chancellory Guard on Gallifrey in the original series episode Arc of Infinity. He was played by Colin Baker, who later inherited the lead role from then-Doctor Peter Davison. Not such different characters actually.
