But weightlifting isn't recommended when you're still growing (especially with me, I've probably grown 2 inches since that photo)

That is a myth! It has been disproven. Read bodybuilding.com and some other bb'ing/weightlifting websites to get some real info and get past these sorts of myths.

In fact, right now while you have growth hormone like crazy is one of the best times to start working out. You can make great gains... plus you don't have a 40-hour workweek and you can probably get a cheap/discounted gym (if not a free one at school!).

I've been doing 3x 25 pushups a day since Xmas and won't participate in this challenge.

However I'm interested to see if anyone knows if doing them on fingertips/knuckles compared to palms changes the exercise your bi/tri-ceps does and not just strengthens your fingers/wrists. I've sort of weaned myself off doing push-ups on my palms but find the only difference muscle-wise is that I need to go down furthur (obviously).

Anyone know about the differences in doing push-ups this way or do their press-ups on their fingertips/knuckles?

get some push-up blocks. it is better than on your knuckles. and you can go down farther.

here is a pic of one of the push-up blocks that i use.

...Don't the push up bars also make it easier because they distribute more weight to your feet?
Isn't the idea that you still take your chest down to the floor which would work your shoulders more? Maybe a combination of styles would work best.

WHen I used to do push-ups I'd use dumb bells as push-up bars, the fact that they'd try to roll away made you work a whole bunch of other muscle to keep balance and control....of course it cost me my teeth.

Mate, use TIMG tags.

i clicked the image button. i don't know why it's so big.

i'm not sure about that. the main difference for me is that you can do down farther. makes it almost like a bench press.

yes, it works your shoulders more. i don't quite touch the ground, b/c that puts a strain on your shoulder if you go too far. it basically works everything more than a regular push up, but they are a lot harder (especially with my push up blocks since they are so big)

if you use dumb bells, you only go down a little bit farther. mine are actually hand-stand blocks for gymnasts

And these are real pushups, mind you! That means elbows 90 degrees, chest touches the ground!
Ninety degress/chest touching the ground is one way to measure.

I prefer saying that if you draw a line from the top of your elbows in the down position, the top of your back/shoulder area is at or below that line.

Of course if you are touching your chest to the ground, you are doing this and then some.

Additionally, your whole body must move up and down, and not just from the waist up, in one continuous motion.

I have found that 20 pound hex dumbbells work good for push up bars. You can alternately lift them up at the top of your push up for some extra work, and so much other stuff you can do with dumbbells also.

Yes, massive ones do. Maybe I should use them so my numbers go up.

it only makes it easier if you are elevated like 2 ft off the ground or more. or against a wall.

believe me, push-up blocks like mine make it at least 10 times harder. but it will make your regular push-ups easier after doing them on the blocks

progress!! i can do 15 in a row now! :D:D:D now i do 12/15/12 standard, 12/15/12 hand wide apart, and 5 hands close together.

Ooh, ooh, can I join? Do fems get a handicap?
I can do 2 sets of 15 reps standard. It's taken me about a year to do this. :(
Now I've started doing them on the ball. Definitely harder. My abs feel like I've been in a car wreck but in a good way.
I've been told, that, like weights in general, I should not be doing this every day. What do you guys think?

Any tips on doing tricep push ups?

I'm getting to the point where I can do cheat's ones from the knees which is progress. But the triceps ones, I'm useless on. My arms just don't like bending that way...

Face away from a low desk, preferably one without sharp edges. Keep your tush as close to the desk as possible. Place your hands on the edge of the desk (they will be slightly behind you and approx. in line with your hips), and straighten out your legs in front of you. Now lower yourself slowly and then raise yourself up again.

Start off slowly and put a large cushion on the floor in case your arms give out. It shouldn't take your more than 2 months to work up to 10 even if you have weak arms.

Good luck and let us know how it goes.

Hi, my name is dogbone

I'm a skinny little runt. (yes, that is an ‘r’)

Every now and again I try to build myself up with a concerted effort of push ups. I usually collapse after about 10 and can build up to 30 after a few weeks but then I inevitably crap out.

If only I had the motivation to continue. So spurred on by the official weight loss thread I've started this one. I'm going to post a shot of my pathetically weak shoulders and upper foreams and commit to post my push up count every Monday starting on the 9th July 2007.

The purpose of the thread is only motivation.

Post your starting number and your goal and goal date, on Monday 9th. Or for late starters, when you start. I'll add the starting numbers to the names on Monday in some sort of a graph format, and new names will be added so it's OK to start at anytime.

Please clearly indicate if you are 'in' by saying so. That way people can give some advice or post their experiences without feeling like they have to join.

Optional: post a photo of forearm/pec/shoulder area at the start and one when you reach your goal.

I've been told that girls can't get huge scary muscles because of the lack of testosterone but then you see those body builders with their huge arms and I wonder about their statements . I do the push ups every other day and so far it doesn't seem to have to much of a negative effect... i think. I'm a bit worried about this too. I guess you can always stop if something goes wrong.

I just did 27.

Before anyone says, "Abstract, you used to be able to do 4 sets of 40", I want to say that I was very very sick for 3 days over the weekend, am still sick now, finished a jog 10 minutes ago.

Also, I'm trying to do pushups with my hands held "lower" on my body....near or slightly below the level of my pecs.....instead of at my pecs. It's much harder. I don't know if it does anything, but it feels more difficult. :p

Both true and false. Women can get large bulky muscles without taking any "supplements" I am an example. When I was in top shape , my chest was 43" and B cups, by upper arms would not fit into womens t-shirts. But hey I could bench press 280lbs ( now only 230lbs) . And no I was not trying to body build but rather going for strenght. I did push ups everyday , at least 100. It is better if you do every second day but in the military not much choice when doing morning PT.

Now my wrists hurt too much to do regularly but I did try

I got to 83 before my right wrist gave out. Now my arms feel rubbery. Fun.

Moving the placement of your hands back really works your triceps more and your chest less. For many people their chest is stronger so moving your hands back makes the pushup a lot harder and helps define your arms more.
