Is there any other way?

I'm quite careful about doing it properly. I do this by pretending that someone is watching me do them.

You don't get stagefright imagining someone's critiquing your pushup form?

Well, whenever you read this dogbone, thanks for starting this thread. I've been doing push ups since whenever it was posted and I can now do 14 consecutive push ups.

I am disgusted!
I did my 20 pushups, but I had to take a 10 second break after the first ten, and then I was actually a little out of breath. Just two months ago, I could do 30 straight without a problem!

How about a contest within a contest for who can do the most pushups one-handed?

^^^So? Same with every other challenge here other than the Nike+ one. People can cheat in this thread each week. I'm still participating, though.

You may get a liar within your group. You may not. I'd rather just believe that people were able to do the number of pushups they stated.

I said 35-40 but so far it's more like 25.

Give me about half an hour and I can do maybe 75 though. That's 2 and a half pushups a minute. :p

Sorry about dogbone. It always sparks my curiosity when I see a "Banned" under some poster's name. I always wonder what on earth they could ahve done.

I knew a girl in the Air Force that could do 25+ one arm push-ups. She would often challenge the unsuspecting macho guys to a contest and then strip their manhood away from them by more than doubling their efforts. It was rather amusing.

but what he's suggesting is a challenge between others and not just urself. And one arm pushups are easy to not do the right way

And people do cheat on nikeplus. No one runs 12:59 for a 5k with an iPod

Yeah, agreed. Thanks for the thread. It inspired me to try a different format. I'd been doing two sets of forty with a small break but now I'm doing a set of twenty and a set of sixty. I want to eventually be doing at least two sets of sixty but I'm still a bit sore.

Cheat! Just use the front two pair of arms:p

I haven't done push-ups in years, but I did manage to do 16 just now before my arms started shaking and I collapsed. Now my shoulders are on fire!

Oh, I'm 6'2" and 220 pounds. Most of that weight is still muscle, but nowadays I've got a little insulation around my six pack. ;)

hmmm i just did 10 . i used to be able to do 30 (which is supposedly impressive for a girl), but i haven't worked out in a year. i'll aime to do 30 by the end of august.

Alternate them. It's great for your body to have a mixture of different exercise routines. I run every second day and do push ups on the other days. This gives my body the chance to recover from one form of exercise whilst still working on another. I find push ups and running go really well together because they work such different areas. :)

yeah, good idea! i think i might start doing that :). Thanks for the idea mad jew!

nice link keebler! maybe instead of doing 3 sets of the same pushups, i'll do different ones :)

p.s. if you're reading this dogbone, huge thanks from me! i was planning to go back to working out for a long time, but never found the motivation to do it. this thread changed that. :D

Just had a test, 82 in one minute. I hope to get to 100 by the end of the month.

I am also doing a chin up (palms away) challange for myself, 20 in a row now after 6 months. I started at only 2 in a row.

Keep up the work.

^^I can probably do 20 in a row if my palms are facing outwards (ie: my fingers are curling away from me), but if I try doing pull-ups with my arms held (somewhat) far apart, I can do 10 on my first set, and less on the 2nd set. I don't even bother with a 3rd set.

Meh, I'm also learning how to swim, so I think I'll stick with that for now. Well, that, and pushups.

I just did 2 x 40 pushups with my arms held further apart, 1 x 40 pushups with my arms at a natural distance part, and one set of around 20 pushups where my arms were close together. My triceps are BURNING!

I can't even do one. :( So fat.

I can do assisted pushups leaning against a wall at a 45 degree angle... and I'm working on my bench/core/upper body strength so MAYBE soon a pushup! :)

This is motivational!

Would have posted earlier but didn't get around to it.

Started on Monday with 10 .... Was especially hard on the third day after I got really sore. Up to 15 in a row now before my arms get all rubbery.

Just an additional note to everyone... if you're doing pushups to failure and you're in the less-than-15-20 range, you're still not using "endurance" muscles, instead you're using the power muscles... and if you're really doing them to failure, they need 1-2 days to heal after that.

If you keep doing pushups daily, or even do another set to failure before your muscles have rebuilt, your body will become overtrained, extra sore, potentially injured, and may attain a catabolic state (reduction of muscle mass/strength).

I agree. Don't do it everyday.

I'm doing them every 2-3 days. I think that's enough for me, but I didn't start out unfit. I just hope to get to the 70-80 pushup level like some of the other guys here are doing.

Okay, now I really am going to start making exercise. I am a 20 years old guy, 6'0" and 195 pounds (a little overweight) and can only make 5 push-ups.

A girl can't possible be making more push-ups than me!!!:p

So thanks to the OP and teflon my life would change, I'll make a party in your honor whenever I reach 30 push-ups in a row.;)
