If you've noticed Transmission showing bandwidth usage even while all torrents are stopped that's the BitTorrent overhead. It's not actually counting toward the totals it takes.

Goodbye to Transmission... for now?

I've been having all kinds of trouble with Transmission for the last month or so. Regardless of what my current upload or download rate is (and even when I have both capped, which I usually do), Transmission has been slowing my Internet connection speed to a crawl. Browsing using Firefox or Safari, checking Mail, etc. barely even works when I have Transmission running. And I'm on a solid 6mbps connection. Anyone else seeing this problem? I've tried rolling back to older versions of Transmission but still have the same problem. About to try Azureus for the first time, which is a shame because Transmission has been great til now!

Did you make sure to throttle your upstream connection speed and number of connections?

I'm having the same problem with you... It's really annoying...

Ugh! I too am having the same problem! I just got an iMac, and with uTorrent and Vuze, it totally kills my internet connection. I can't do anything. I think the software is overwhelming the router. I don't know if transmission was doing this, I decided not to use it becuase it was soooo slow and I couldn't get it to show the port as open.

This is really frustrating, becuase I can't use any internet functionality while I download. It isn't a bandwith issue either - the torrent clients aren't using nearly enough bandwith in downloading. The issue seems to be originating from the router

For what it's woth, I have a Linksys 54WGL or whatever running DD-WRT. I had no such problem with the same router and a Windows PC. Any ideas? Apparantly a lot of people are having issues.

just FYI, i did more research into my problem, and it was the torrent software overwhelming the router. The solution was to re-flash my router from DD-WRT to Tomato, and enable QoS settings to make torrent apps lower priority, so they don't encroach on regular web surfing

What did you exactly do? Can you guide us?:D

I've tried all of those and more except for bittyrant. Nothing satisfies me more than utorrent. It simply does its work. Sure, it could be better. But its what a torrent client should be IMO.

Definitely gonna try it only when it gets a little better than that. Transmission rocks except from that tiny problem!!:p

I don't think it's fair to put uTorrent in the list because it just got it's Beta out... But i think that by the time it will become the most popular :)

I'm using Vuze now to download this 1.36 GB torrent, my router is AirPort extreme N (100Mbit ethernet version) and I never had connection drops, even though it has been downloading for 1 day and 12 hours already. Computer is MacBook rev.B connected via wifi N.

When you first install Vuze it looks like CRAP. Fortunately with a couple of mouse clicks you can get it back to looking like it did in the old Azureus days.

Transmission or Azureus, but Azureus has all the "Vuze" crap on it, so would suggest Transmission.

Yeah, but you can disable all of the Vuze crap in about four mouse-clicks. I use all kinds of private trackers with stupid Hit and Run rules, and Vuze has alot of features to make it easier to get what I need.
