Just ordered a 32G with 4g. Price was not an issue, I've got the cash.

That said, my ipad 1 runs just fine. Never had any issues with it. Like the iphone I upgrade every other year. Unless something mind blowing comes out, I've not been disappointed yet.

I have two iPad 1's and went with the iPad 3 today.

Two years is good enough to hold technology.

Will pass down the iPads to family members.

my iPad1 works still fine for the apps I'm using. If iOS5.1 doesn't kill its performance then I'm even considering waiting till iPad4. So as much as I would like the new iPad I can't really justify spending the money and leaving the iPad1 unused or selling it for a few hundred bucks.

I would upgrade if it wasn't 928 dollar for the new iPad incl. Applecare+. That is a total amount of money that warrants some deliberation.

Bought iPad 1 in April/10 and used it until August/11 when I gave it to my sister in law's daughter because I believed that the'retina' iPad was going to be released in the fall.

Short story; I had the cash ready and bought a 64gb 4g model and an apple tv as soon as the servers weren't too crash.

Tom

(I would have purchased one even if I had an iPad 2)

Bought the high end 3G iPad 1 near the beginning and was very happy with it.

Through an employer I was given an iPad 2.

After a month or so, I sold the iPad 2 and kept the iPad 1.

Call me crazy, but I like the iPad 1 form factor better.

I will look at the iPad 3, but won't buy the cellular one this time around.

I will be upgrading my 16GB wifi iPad 1 to a 32 or 64GB wifi+4G new iPad (I may go for a 32 so I can get a new AppleTV).

This is what i did. i sold my 32gb iPad 1 plus keyboard few months ago for £300.
Day before the announcement I sold Apple TV based on rumour for £90 (so only cost less than £20 after fees for the upgrade....though doesn't seem that much of an upgrade for the tv)

Got the 32gb instead of 64gb which saved me the extra £80 and put it towards the tv instead.

So, what are your thoughts and plans? Are you buying The New iPad?

I sold my original iPad 32gb wifi to a friend for $300 yesterday. I wasn't really sure how impressed I would be with today's announcement, so I went to Walmart and purchased an iPad 2.

However, After seeing the keynote, I'm sold! I placed a preorder for a 32gb black wifi model and I decided to keep the iPad 2 I'm the interim. I have a 15 day return window to get my money back.

Win win I'd say.

Won't be buying the iPad 3 as an iPad 1 replacement. I haven't upgraded up iOS5 (don't plan to) which sounds like a big cause for slowness and dissatisfaction among iPad 1 users (perhaps an iTactic to get users to purchase a new device). The iPad 1 still does everything it was advertised to do very well and a nicer screen alone doesn't justify that purchase for me. Also, owning the 64GB plus 3G model helps keep it nicer and thus less likely to be replaced so compulsively by the iPad 3.

It's a no brainer upgrade IMO

Your getting 2 cameras (which we never had), amazing speed boosts with the a5x and a retina display.

Most likely 1gb or ram too

I sold my 1st gen 16gb wifi for $345 2 weeks ago  (this is not a mistype)

can't wait

That is an awesome price! Where'd you sell it?

I got the iPad1 a couple months after launch and I skipped the iPad2. I ordered the new one today with LTE. That's what I was waiting for.

I was strongly considering putting my iPad 1 (3g/32GB) on eBay a week or so back, then getting the new iPad 3. In the end though, I didn't. I may end up getting one a bit later, but for the moment my one does all I need (mainly playing videos). I'd rather save my money for upgrading my Mac, which is also due for an upgrade (currently a 2008 15" MBP, but as well as a (hiRes) MBP I'm also considering an Air or an iMac this time).

If iOS 6 comes out with awesome features and isn't compatible with iPad1, and all the apps start requiring it, I'll jump to an iPad 3, but otherwise I'll try stick it out until the iPad 4 :)

Upgrading but...

I was having horrible problems with crashes and lags on my iPad 1. After upgrading to 5.1 the problems went away. Still I think the retina display will be much easier on the eyes while reading. I was a little bummed that the haptic display rumors didn't pan out.

Wish I had done like you and not upgraded. However you do realize at some point certain apps wil start to require ios5 or greater. I bought my iPad 1 on day one, 64 gb 3G and today I ordered the 64gb LTE AT&T

Definitely. Huge upgrade from ipad1.

Ios5 has made my ipad1 lag really bad. It will be nice to type and actually see the letters appearing as I touch the keys.

Tough choice compared to MBA. I have (well, now my wife has) a MBA11, and it is also an amazing device. If the ipad3 hadn't included the display upgrade, I was serously considering springing for another MBA11, and leaving my old ipad behind.

Not even a question. Bought it as soon as I could. Huge improvement over the original iPad which, as tmarks mentioned has lagged significantly since iOS 5.

I also have a mid-2011 MBA but use my iPad about 5 times as often.

Gen 1 to 3 here as well. My 1st one had some weird hardware failure and died (out of warranty naturally.) So I've been iPad-less for a couple of months now. Was going to get ipad2 but for $100+ I could get a retina display. Love the display on my iPhone, so I'm excited for my new iPad! I went from 64 to 32 GB and got an apple tv. :D Thank you tax returns ;)

Preordered. My iPad 1 will be a permanent front end to my home personal music system and do double time as a recipe book and educational games machine for my 2.5 yr old son. It has served me very well the last two years and will continue to serve until it gives up it's ghost :)

The iPad 2 was an easy to resist upgrade for iPad 1st gen owners but this update is a must have.

My 32 GB 3G model is being sold for that baby. I'm most excited for 4G LTE. I wonder if Cook will take the same approach with the iPhone 5 (bigger screen, LTE, 10 times better screen, etc.).

I'll be upgrading from the first generation iPad for many of the reasons outlined above.
