I'm having sporadic battery and Safari shutdown issues, so I was planning to pre-order if the new model had enough upgrades to make it worthwhile. I think it does and my new model is on it's way! :D

I'm going to switch. The biggest issue for me is the low memory (256mb) on the iPad 1 which is becoming more and more frustrating.

Trying to sell my iPad 1 at work.

For about 5 minutes I was thinking no big deal I will just keep my iPad 1. The more I thought about it the more I realized the retina display is a huge deal for me. The clarity just is not there with the iPad 1 compared to even Android phones. I have a Droid Charge phone which has about the same PPI as the new iPad so I can get an idea of just how much clearer it is to read text. On my Charge it is like night and day compared to my iPad 1.

As a college instructor I am also highly interested in display mirroring which does not work on the iPad 1. In teaching circles I see the iPad 1 getting left behind very quickly. In fact I would go as far as to say the next major IOS version may even exclude iPad 1. We are already starting to see a few higher end apps not work on the iPad 1 at all and this concerns me.

I am also an IOS developer and wanted to hang on to my iPad 1 for development testing on a slower device but personally I'm getting tired of dumbing down apps just to work across all devices. This is however the only thing that prevents me from switching well that and money of course and the wrath of a wife who thinks I spend too much on toys.

yes!

Definetely upgrading to the new iPad! I have an iPad1 3g 16gb now with unlimited data, and eargerly looking forward to the new version with 32gb and LTE!

I will say that iOS 5.1 has smoothed out the glitchiness of 5.0.1 in my iPad1...that was the worst...laggy everywhere. This is better but still not like I remember it being when I first got it.

I just ordered the new iPad 32 GB WiFi. For me, that is the perfect device for reading academic journals, blogs, and news sites. I always found the text on the iPad 1 a little bit too blurry when reading a PDF without zooming in.

Its going to be an awesome machine for people who make their living by reading!

By the way, I am keeping my old 64 GB iPad 1 as a media station and for writing (with an external keyboard hooked up). That way I don't have to carry home the laptop from the uni all the time, but I can still read and write at the same time.

Is anybody else keeping their old iPad, and what will you use it for?

As a photographer the whole reason I didn't upgrade to an iPad 2 was that the display was the same. The most important benefit of the new iPad is the retina display. I can't wait, while my portfolio doesn't look horrible on the original iPad it will be stunning on the new iPad. I'm very excited.

Traded my iPad 1 into Amazon for $250. :)

The lack of processing power and RAM is starting to show on the iPad 1. Webpages constantly crash Safari and apps in general struggle to keep up. I didn't feel like the additional features of the iPad 2 were enough to make me upgrade, but the jump from the iPad 1 to the new iPad was more than enough for me to open the wallet.

Have the iPad 1, skipped the iPad 2, getting the new one was a no brainer.

I thought so, mainly for the higher res screen, which I hope helps reading newspapers and magazines on the iPad.

But I've asked 2 people at work who also have the iPad 1, and neither plan to upgrade.

I upgraded because it has the Retina display I was waiting for. Plus, some apps don't work on the iPad 1.

Glad you posted this! I was gonna sell mine to Gazelle, and them discovered that I could get $100 more from Amazon. Sweet!

iPad 2 wasn't worth it to me, but another year later, this is a HUGE upgrade. Nearly every app crashes on my iPad immediately after launching. It's getting really frustrating, and it's nearly unusable.

I'm excited for LTE, retina, a slimmer form factor, and cameras! It's an entirely new device compared to the first gen.

Although my iPad 1 is still as snappy as ever, I've order the new iPad. That screen . I skipped iPad 2 always planning to get the iPad 3 when it got released, and its definitely a big upgrade. Can't wait to get my hands on it.

Good deal. I checked both. Looks like Gazelle dropped by $100 after the announcement and Amazon only dropped by $10.

excellent smackdown dodge ;)

Nope -- you never saw it coming. Look how SERIOUS you were that someone might have been wrong. Here's a clue to avoid getting your chain pulled: next time read their signature in advance... it told you I have a 64GB iPad before you even replied, Should have been your FIRST clue... :p

I never noticed your sig if it was present at the time I replied, clearly I've had my chain yanked, my days will be forever darkened by this transgression from this point hence #sadface

I bought an iPad 16gb first generation back when the iPad 2 was just being released nationwide here in the UK.

While I liked the iPad 2's improvements I was skeptical at whether it could replace my MacBook Pro for some tasks when out and about.

I am that impressed by the iPad 1, I do plan on buying an iPad 3.

:apple:

I was thinking of doing the same Amazon deal but how do you how much they will offer? I know Amazon will list their pricing but can't they offer lower?

My significant other and I just completed a "3-2-1 swap."

She got in on the original iPad, and I waited for the iPad 2 to get mine. For me, the retina display is worth an upgrade, soooo..

1. I bought the iPad 3 64GB Wifi
2. She got my iPad 2 64GB Wifi
3. We eBayed the iPad 1 to help defray the upgrade costs. Everyone is happy.

I'm surprised at the selling price a first-gen, base model iPad 16GB with WiFi only will still command. Ours sold quick for $199.99, but there are some being sold auction style, with actual bids, going for as high as $230 to $240.

The upgrade has been a revelation. I didn't buy immediately although I wanted to, it took me a week and a bit to finally get my hands on one. Have to say the screen resolution isn't amazing at first. Especially in the setup menus, once you've passed that stage everything looks really crisp and defined. As most have said already you really notice it in the text. It's fantastic viewing entire webpages without having to zoom it. That alone for me is a killer feature.

The speed is also something that I think gets taken for granted by iPad 2 users. My god its blazing fast compared to an iPad 1 on iOS 5.01. The multigestures seamlessly switching back and forth between apps is a pure joy to use.

The 1gb of memory feels really spacious, obviously there is still room for improvement there but it's a massive upgrade compared to the paltry 256 of the original. It's great not having to wait when switching between webpages, makes copy and pasting much easier.

The heat I've noticed but to be honest, I like it. Nothing worse than touching ice cold steel.

The camera is really great, not as good as the 4S but still very capable and the 1080p video quality is sweet.

Overall well worth the upgrade from the iPad 1. The screen quality alone is worth the upgrade. Even if I had the iPad 2 id say it's still worth upgrading to. It's not an immediate wham bam effect, just pure solid screen quality and fidelity that has to be seen to be understood. The more time you spend with it the more you appreciate and enjoy it. Looking back at the iPad 1 screen, it looks like there's a thin mesh over the entire screen. Not really a problem before but now in the age of retina displays it just doesn't cut the mustard.

New iPad : 9.5/10

Are you ok with payment in the form of an Amazon gift card only?

New iPad : 9.5/10

This is pretty much what happened to me. I made the mistake of stopping by an Apple store and bam, new 64GB iPad 3rd gen wifi to replace my 32gb first gen wifi.

I thought I'd have a small iota of buyers remorse but... nothing. Not even a thought of returning it.

So, what are your thoughts and plans? Are you buying The New iPad?

Sold mine in December in preparation of the new iPad for 400 bucks! But within 3 weeks I was having iPad withdrawals so I bought an open item 16gb Wifi iPad 2 that I was able to have it's warranty date moved to my purchase date. (original date was Sept) so it was pretty much new.

When the new iPad came out I got one with LTE on release day. Gave my iPad 2 to my step daughter. Glad I did because the iPad 1 is really long in the tooth now in comparison.

I did. My biggest complaint about the original is the screen, especially in portrait orientation.

The 2 was not enough of an upgrade for me. The new iPad is great with everything the 2 had plus the gorgeous screen!

Now I can read full web and magazine pages of text in portrait mode without zooming. I wish the technology was there the first time around but the resale value takes some of the pain out of the upgrade.

After a few weeks with it, the difference is more noticeable. I dread every time i have to use that old slow piece of ****! The screen looks bad, really bad in portrait mode. I liked my old iPad quite a bit. When I got the new one I noticed it was definitely sharper but after a few weeks it's very much night and day.
