update to 5.1

i haven't had safari crash yet

My experience also! Safari was crashing every few minutes under iOS 5.0. The crashes have stopped with iOS 5.1. Also, the audio of movies I ripped from DVDs is much louder -- before installing iOS 5.1 the volume was so low it was difficult to hear.

First Gen iPad 16GB here, I would have the new one right now if I could afford it. Sadly without the sale of a few things the money is just not there.

Dunno...

I ordered a 3 because I want it!

I have no idea what to do with my 1 though... I've dropped it a few times, so its beat up, but it works great and still does everything I need it to do. I think its worth more to me in my bathroom (or something) than whatever I could sell it for... I have no idea how much it'd be, but It can't be too much, since they're so cheap refurbished from Apple now.

So... I dunno!

Pre-ordered mine as well. To me it's a no brainer, as it's a big upgrade from iPad 1. If you were an iPad 2 owner, you may not see the need to upgrade. Just glad I sold my old iPad before the announcement :D

I'm waiting on my money from Gazelle. I used my iPad for almost everything. It was my alarm clock in the morning, it was my morning newspaper, it was my technical reference bookshelf at work, and it was my evening crossword puzzle. I'm kinda jonesing for it right now.

The iPad 2 wasn't enough of an upgrade for me to give it up, but I'm really glad I made a leap of faith and sold it before the keynote. I can't wait to see the text rendering on that retina screen. And I'm definitely hoping there will be fewer crashes with more RAM available. It just sounds great all-around.

Purchased 1st Gen Ipad 64gig 3G on first day of its announcement, did the same today ordering a 64gig LTE today.

Your memory might be a little fuzzy here. The largest capacity for the first iPad was only 32GB.

Subscribed to about 5 to 6 different magazines and the first gen is very slow so it time for an upgrade. 64GB 4G on the way and a 16GB Wifi.

Ordered one.

Only thing I disliked about my orignal iPad was the screen resolution. The new one is perfect. Care less about the other improvements.

The new iPad is the worthy upgrade to the iPad 1, the iPad 2 just didn't have enough in my opinion to justify the upgrade but this one is better in every way. I was finding the iPad 1 a bit slow these days and I never was totally happy with the screen resolution once I got used to the iPhone 4 so this is everything I could have asked for.

Your memory might be a little fuzzy there, as I have a 64Gb 1st Gen iPad sitting next to me

Funny mine only has 58.1 GB storage. Yours must be highly unique...

(still waiting to see how long it takes before he realizes someone is pulling his chain... )

Yup had the 1st gen since it was out in the US (got it imported to the UK). Seems very slow compared to the ipad 2 I use in work. Retina is going to be awesome on the screen :D

+1

Like tens of millions of other owners, I did not see the benefit in upgrading from iPad 1 to iPad 2. So, for me (us) the The New iPad announcement is very big news. For the first time, we get:

Retina Display
Cameras
4G Network Speeds
Quad Processor Speeds
iMovie
Facetime
Skype
Voice Dictation
AirPlay Mirroring
Smart Cover
Tapered Design

Like the iPhone, the iPad is on the every-other-year cycle. Those of us who bought iPad 1's in 2010 weren't ditching them a year later for iPad 2. Our wait has been rewarded in the same way that I'm not jealous of my wife's iPhone 4GS with Siri because my iPhone 4 will soon become an iPhone 5 with 4G LTE.

I'm glad we have a thread for iPad 1 owners because all the jealous iPad 2 owners are mucking up all the other threads. Apple didn't design the The New iPad for them; they designed it for us.

5.1 has reduced a lot of Lag too, if you type really fast there is still some lagging but nothing like it was before 5.1. Apple dun good.

the multitasking bar doesn't take a couple of seconds to appear anymore either it actually slides up with my gesture.

I'm still upgrading it to a 3rd Gen though, but at least whoever buys this one will still have a good device.

Upgrading my Ipad 1 64GB for the iPad 3 64GB.
I didn't think the upgrade to the iPad 2 was worth it so skipped it and I'm glad I did now.

Very very tempted to upgrade but the sensible side of me is telling me 'no'.
Retina display would be great but as I
mostly use it for watching Netflix, the odd iTunes download, sky go, I won't notice the difference. Plus I have my iPhone 4s for the cameras, FaceTime etc, and don't use iPad for games much. Hmmmm decisions!

I didn't skip the iPad 2 for any one specific reason. There was simply not enough that made me think that it was time to toss in a few bills for another. I never intended to re-sell my first iPad because I'm real excited to turn it into my kitchen gadget. The jump from 1 to 3 is similar to how I felt going from the iPhone 3G to the 4s. It is worlds apart in speed, display quality, and form factor. I don't get the lady boner over the retina display like everyone else seems to but I can certainly appreciate it. I am also looking forward to a speed bump. While the iPad 1 is still proving highly capable for me (hulu, netflix, web browsing, porn, twitter, e-mail, etc), I do believe that apps are starting to lean towards the need to have the better processor.

I stick with what I've always said, for the iPad, I would likely sit on a every other year upgrade schedule.

What I'm thinking on doing is possibly waiting for the iPad 4/4th gen, then buying the iPad 2 and 3 at a cheaper price.

^ What, buy an iPad 2 for your kitchen when 4 is released? I'm sure that eventually the iPad 1 may not work even as a kitchen gadget so I too would look for an incremental upgrade in due time. But if I'm only using web and a few recipe apps then I doubt the iPad 1 will be obsolete to me anytime soon. Or I hope.

The Ipad2 was not as appealing an upgrade as this one appears to be.

This is me pretty much except I bought the first one about a month after release. Still have my unlimited data. Not sure how to do the data swap as I want the newer iPad to have the unlimited data.

I have an original iPad w/3G.

I've thought about it for the past few days, and I think I'm sticking out with my original iPad for another year. My iPad does everything I need it to do, albeit a little slowly, and occasional crashes because of the small 256mb of RAM.

My iPad is my companion at work for listening to music, Pandora, using the Calendar, Task management (Things), reading email, surfing the web on the go, and reading books. The screen is plenty good for my uses.

Yes, I would enjoy a retina screen, faster processor and 4G faster speeds (none of the other things like a camera are important to me), but I can't see getting rid of a perfectly good iPad, which does 95% of what I want it to do, and paying $700+ for an iPad (3rd generation). I'll make do for one more year with this current version.

Maybe this has to do with my laptop - an original White MacBook (2006). It's definately on it's last legs. I'll use the money to buy a new MacBook Air later this year.
