I just watched Episode 1 and chuckled quite a bit, definitely Seth McFarland humor. My observations are that liking the characters, there are both a Warf and Data like characters, that it feels like Galaxy Quest to me, at times it feels STNG-like, but some of the jokes break the mood of the story if you desire STNG, that the animations looks passable, but the interior sets are completely, terribly cheap looking which hurts immersion. I guess that is where they ran out of money?

I will watch a couple more episodes before I make a decision to continue or not.

If you watch the extras on Fox Now app, you'll see that Seth wanted to make it look more like the ST:NG type of bridge and interiors instead of the darker, foreboding ones (like Enterprise, or Discovery, or even other Sci-Fi like Farscape).

How did the Expanse season 1 compare to the Orville season 1 ?

I was just trying to compare apples with apples.
They are both good, but in their own ways. They are apples in the sense of being sci-fi and being set in space and in the future, but they are still fairly different as far as the overall take on things, the way storyline and episodes evolve, and various other things.

I liked episode 5, despite the plot holes.
For example, why couldn't the 29th century aliens not go back though the same wormhole and get what they wanted? And the Orville's escape from and destruction of the wormhole was too easy, as was drilling into the device that Priya installed.
I also think that all the characters talk too much like they're from the 21st century. I realize that they're doing that to make it easier to write the funny parts, but it feels wrong.

I was interested to see that the episode was directed by the second Start Trek Number One, Jonathan Frakes.
The contemporary pop/culture references are a bit out of place at times, but I do have to say that they do make some jokes pretty funny. I guess we can question whether or not jokes are even really needed in a show like that--comparing it to TNG for example--but I guess that's type of show this is--basically more or less the foundation of TNG (and some other Star Trek) with Seth McFarlane humor injected.

I'm glad they went that way. TNG is something that I (and I think many others) see as some of the best of Star Trek and it's nice to have something that fills in that nostalgia, even if not quite completely and not quite exactly.

Have you had a chance to see any more episodes ?
Been distracted with other things. I'll try to get back to it and report back. If you've been watching it, how do you feel about the stories, if they reached a point where before they were not so good, but then got better, at what episode would that be?

Are you distracted with WoW again :D ?

I thought they got much better at episode 3. I thought episode one was ok with episode two a little better then one but slow.

They do tend to reference events from previous episodes so it's best to see them in order.

Ok, I’ve watched the first 5 episodes. Except for the humor, the atmosphere is eariely like STNG, the CGI is acceptable, but the interior sets are CHEAP! The stories are decent, but so far mostly retread themes. The episode about the drifting ship and the last episode I watched, Pria were both pretty good. If I have a problem, it’s the humor, although I do chuckle during this show, the humor detracts from the seriousness of the themes. I will continue watching. :)

Thank God the sets are cheap - means that they are not spending more money per episode than an average Sci-Fi show so they will more than likely keep it on the air.

Retread themes - of course, it supposed to be based on Star Trek stories, but then again, most Sci-Fi stories are really based on old books and short stories from the 1920's and 1930's, if not - then based on old show like "Outer Limits" or "The Twilight Zone".

I can't wait until their "Tribbles"-like episode... ;)

So far, my reaction has been meh. It is ok, but it isn't "must see tv" for me.
For me it's more or less crossed into the area where I watch it almost as soon as it airs (vs putting it off until a bit later at some point).

I'm currrently watching the episode "Krill."

IMHO - any discussion regarding "Krill" that is PRS (Political-Religion-Social) should be hidden with "Spoiler" as to not offend anyone if you are writing about personal opinions or beliefs.

With that said, I loved that episode as well. Everyone on the show is doing an awesome job.

I'd love to how ST: Discovery is doing, but it asks for a CC number... ;)

I think "Krill" has been the best episode so far.

That said, there were way too many car rental jokes.

I’ve not seen this episode yet but find it interesting the relationship of the name, Krill compared to the Krell (Forbidden Planet).
I keep thinking of the Kree from the Marvel universe.

I'm finding that this is better Trek than Discovery. I find that the better episodes do inject some humor into them. I can't see Discovery even trying it and if they do, we'll go, "huh"? I prefer this over Discovery in a number of ways. It makes me feel good when it's over and brings a smile to my face. Watching Discovery, which I will continue to do, doesn't leave me wanting for more.

Very interesting. Any decent or intriguing plots?

This week's episode with the Krell was another really excellent one. The last scene was chilling.

I hope they can find their groove and settle into episodes like this week.

I agree this was good, it was hard hitting, and now that I’m acclimated to the humor integrated into the drama, I can live with that. Damn it, that is a new leg!!

The challenging thing about the Krill, it’s basically kill or be killed. The Union will need an amazing angle if they ever hope to achieve peace with them. Millions might have to die to achieve it.
