Cupid's Dagger made me laugh. :D For those who have not seen it, a pheromone onboard the ship causes the Captan, XO, and the Doctor to make Love their first priority over pressing matters. :D

A lot of the show has felt like Star Trek TNG, but Cupid's Dagger and Firestorm have had more of an Star Trek Original series feel, which I am really enoying. Quite like the direction the show is going.

Plus news is that the E13 has been pushed into S2. Some panic, but to me, it was scheduled to air Dec. 14. Unless you're airing a holiday show - forget trying to get a viewership. Good that they postponed it.

Also, depending on who ends up with 20th Century Fox, I don't think Seth would want his shows behind any paywall due to their popularity. Hence the whole premise with this ST-like show being OTA ("Over The Air" Free).

One of my most favorite Sci-Fi episodes... :)

"Firestorm" another great episode - the proverbial Sci-Fi "Lieutenant's trial" - totally great they way Seth handled it. Should've been the Halloween episode... ;)

For me, best so far is "Krill".
Agreed! I loved the discussion of clowns by fearful crew members. Was it a hobo clown? Those are the worst! :D

I’m really irritated that over-the-air networks are feeling the need to try to jump on the subscription band wagon. I said that for the CBS All Access discussion concerning Discovery.

Anyone else giving it a try? I figured it could go either way, and looked like it would just be silly. But after this week's episode I think it could turn into a really good series. They tackled a very serious subject, and didn't try for the expected outcome. I was impressed.
What subject did they tackle and how didn't they try for the expected outcome?

I watched the first episode. I agree with @ucfgrad93. It was ok. It reminded me too much of Star Trek: The Next Generation. I found the storyline weak. And the mixture of comedy with drama was unbalanced. I forgot to watch the second episode. I will watch another episode and see how it pans out. As it stands, I don't see it lasting.
I agree it does seem like a copy of Star Trek: The Next Generation. But it is a good show nonetheless.
I downloaded Fox Now to my Xbox One and watched it. On demand is awesome. Has commercials, but like over-the-air, it is FREE to watch (so I don't mind). Watched E1 and E2 last night.
Sadly I am stationed overseas and have to resort to "other methods" to watch The Orville.
The whole Captain/First Officer/Ex-spouce thing could get old fast if they don't give it some room to grow and change.
I agree.
They need to get rid of the current day pop culture references. It really makes no sense.
For the time period of the show it is out of place.
I just watched Episode 1 and chuckled quite a bit, definitely Seth McFarland humor. My observations are that liking the characters, there are both a Warf and Data like characters, that it feels like Galaxy Quest to me, at times it feels STNG-like, but some of the jokes break the mood of the story if you desire STNG, that the animations looks passable, but the interior sets are completely, terribly cheap looking which hurts immersion. I guess that is where they ran out of money?

I will watch a couple more episodes before I make a decision to continue or not.

The Bridge located in the producer’s garage
I was the same way and grew to like The Orville.
I think "Krill" has been the best episode so far.

That said, there were way too many car rental jokes.
There was.
I am glad to see that it got a second season. Now I just need to get stationed in the US before it starts.

I've been watching the series on Hulu.

Positives:

  1. Anything that makes it a bit like TNG (and less like the current ST) - brightly lit bridge, less serialization, overall positive attitude
  2. Not making it a pure spoof...
  3. ...but still being a little less reverent/pious than traditional pre-Enterprise ST.

Negatives:

  1. The sets were clearly built on a budget, which betrays a lack of confidence in the show from Fox
  2. The cast and writers are still finding their feet, so the quality is uneven
  3. Some people will be put off by the obvious homage to Star Trek shows of years past

I hate Family Guy, so I had no time for Seth McFarlane until I saw his name on the splendid re-make of Cosmos. So far I like The Orville and it is growing on me. I think it may have found a good niche in being Sci-Fi that not too dark/serialized/serious, but may attract a wider audience than more niche shows like Firefly.

That is my biggest complaint about The Orville.

It's probably one of my favorite things about the show, and I think that is where audiences are divided. Some like the similarity to Star Trek, others don't.

If the show can win over enough Star Trek fans, it will survive - not as a crossover success, but more of a "Star Trek for people dissatisfied with the current Star Trek/nostalgic about TNG".

On the other hand, there is still time for it to carve out a more unique identity - but given what I've seen so far, it's just a Seth McFarlane love-letter to classic Star Trek TV. And I'm fine with that.

The good thing is that it's already been renewed for another season, which is a fairly sizable step forward (certainly more than Firefly got).

Hmm, this is very interesting. If it shows up on a plane entertainment system (or somewhere else that I might encounter it) I'll give it a shot.

I don't see Episode 6, "Krill" on Fox Now anymore...

Any ideas?

The best episode, still MIA - maybe it deserves an MA 17 and with the impending sale to Disney...

Really? Well good, I don't watch it, but I'm always happy to see any TV Sci-fi not get the early boot.

No doubt. At this, we have enough to watch on all our subs, both new and backlog, that's there's zero reason to pay for one specific show, even if it's a Trek show (though the mediocre ratings don't help ...)

That's the problem with ST: Disco, it is really the only show to pay for on CBS All-Access (but I thought I saw previews for another show going on there), unless you are into the complete back-log of "I Love Lucy" and "Big Bang Theory"...

I don't thing Seth will want any of his shows behind a Disney pay-wall. Disney will put the new Star Wars live action series behind it, but then Disney will have all their shows and movies as well as all of 20th Century Fox's library which will then be worth it...

The pull was only from Fox Now (public on-demand, see pic).

Makes sense. I just checked and it's on Comcast on-demand so I bet all the cable providers with on-demand have it.

I guess you can't expect much if you aren't willing to pay for tv.

I wouldn't be surprised to see it on Netflix in a year.

I love this show. Been watching every week since it debuted. The first few episodes like so many shows was uneven, but man, has it hit it's stride quickly. I wouldn't have thought there woukd be room in the scifi world for another Trek-like show but this show has knocked it right out of the ballpark with some amazing storylines and not always happy endings.

And let's talk about the makeup! I agree the sets look cheap, but the makeup sure doesn't! They have done an amazing job on it. Frankly better than Star Trek in my opinion. Hopefully they win an award for it, because they certainly deserve to.

I know a show is good when I want to watch it as soon as it airs/releases. I haven't like a show this much in many years.

If it does ok and is picked up for a second season, I will binge the first and watch if I like it. I won't watch before then because I'm sick of getting into a show that just gets cancelled right away anyway.

You should watch it anyway...it's that good. Although now it has been picked up for a second season anyway. :D

I hope you have given the show another chance. It is really good. Watch the first five or six episodes. It's at least lasting for two seasons. Hopefully even more!

Besides Eureka and Battlestar, I can't think of another series SyFy did a good job on. None recently

Farscape. Until they screwed it up and cut the planned 5th season. SyFy screws up everything. Farscape was an amazing show with excellent writing and deserved better. Never have forgived them for that.

Great news for a show so early in it's run!

You might try Hulu.

Probably has to be re-edited for TV (the scene is pretty gruesome).

It is on Hulu(from what others tell me)...

I don't mind the similarities but I don't want it to become a ripoff of Star Trek like what happens with other shows.
