I say 'major' because someone will claim that by winning the North-East Counties Under-16 Girl's Shield or something they've picked up a trophy, but that doesn't cut any ice with me. ;)

Just like the Gooners at the start of the Season that were sounding off about taking their first "silverware" when Arsenal won the Emirates Cup. :p

It's true that Rafa has brought home silverware as Liverpool coach. But what do you think about the criticism that he's only good in knockout competitions, because he plays conservative formations designed not to lose games rather than to win them? People looking at it from that angle claim that he trys to slow the game down in the first leg and grind out a 0-0 draw or a 1-0 win, and then bring the game back to "fortress Anfield" (this season anything but) to win the second leg. Critics claim that this works for competitions like the Champions League or FA Cup, but not in the Premier League, which is why we haven't won the league in almost 20 years.

Making the Champions League the number one priority is the correct approach.

Of course, winning the Premiership would be good too, and the approach of the Liverpool of the 70s/80s was to go all out to win everything you compete in, but the realism today is the that the main purpose of the Premiership is to secure Champions League for next season. Even though at the moment that is touch and go :p

At this point I'd take a league title over a Champions League title, though that would be my second choice. Winning the league guarantees a spot in the Champions league anyway. I'll bet Fergie would like to take United to the top of the list of clubs in number of titles won. And he's close.

Proves absolutely nothing. You'd have to be naive as hell to listen to this post. If you can't see the difference, then I pity you.

So what exactly is the difference?

Anelka left for a bigger club, which more of a chance of silverware. (Not directly associated with a manager leaving, but that wasn't the point I was trying to make.)

He signed a contract, so had a contract and still left (Which was the point I was making)

Leaving doesn't mean walking out all the time, selling is classed as leaving, no?

You make no points as to how it doesn't prove anything, just simply disregard it. Personally I think the Liverpoor Soap is brill, takes my mind off the Football Circus in the North-East.

Anyway, Liverpoor are not important. It was another good day at the office for the Mighty Joe Garner.

Yes, the thousands of gooners that were saying that.

How does it feel being 14 points (assuming you hold out for this draw) behind a team that spent £35 million+ less than you this summer? :p Then again, at least you don't support Spurs. :D

Edit: Whoops, spoke too soon.. Liverpool 1 - 2 Aston Villa.. :)

It feels pretty lame, I must say - especially given that, with better squad selection and owners who aren't *****, we could have been challenging for more than just the Champions League IMHO.

2-2 final. make that TEN draws on the season so far...

Good grief Rafa, when are you going to learn: we'll "win now't with Kuyt"? Crouchy rescues the draw against Villa (who, I must say, are playing quite well these days, though it isn't an excuse)...Kuyt should have been left out of the squad, the somewhat less-useless Voronin should have rode the bench and Crouch should have started.

Oh, and where are you, Stevie G?

In case anyone cares, USA beat Sweden 2-0.;)

...we'll "win now't with Kuyt"
Heh, that's how I talk. :p

My Dutchish uncle gave me a lesson on how to properly pronounce the foppish Dutchman's name this weekend. No matter how I tried, he wasn't happy with my attempts. Ah well.

And Villa are indeed doing all right for themselves this season. I don't mind them to be honest, so I'm happy they're having a good run.

It appears that Mighty Joe Garner is being throttled by an invisible assailant – this sort of unsportsmanlike conduct is becoming all too common in the modern game. :(

This is rather unfortunately what you get the in the lower leagues, and with the ref we had on Saturday we most likely didn't get the decision either.

I don't know what you need.. but you should be challenging for more, really.

Considering how many starters they are missing, Chelsea are playing pretty darn well right now. I have to give Avram Grant credit, I totally wrote him off when Mourinho left - but he seems to have held things together so far.

More goals. Our formations are too conservative. Rafa plays 4-5-1 formations too often - unless Gerrard pushes forward successfully our striker gets isolated. We are pretty good at slowing down a game but not enough of an attacking threat. It's a bad plan to go into a game planning to grind out a 1-0 win every time.

Player selection is a problem too IMHO. Ryan Babel scores goals at twice the rate as Kuyt and Voronin but is left on the bench. Crouch is better than Kuyt or Voronin and is left out of the squad altogether on many occasions. And we are a little weak in the back, hopefully picking up Skrtel this month will plug that hole.

Now that Gerrard is going through a funk only Torres looks likely to score, and his quality has won us a few games we deserved to lose.

Fixed that for you.

Though it was Crouchie yesterday.

I actually thought about changing it to "drawn" myself...:D

That was our SIXTH draw at Anfield this season. That's mid-table form.

I'm a big fan of our lanky, robot-dancing striker, and I don't understand why Kuyt & Voronin get starts and Crouch doesn't.

I'd gladly wager anyone a box of Jaffa Cakes (proper McVities ones too, mind) that Newcastle will not win a major trophy during Kevin Keegan's tenure at St James' Park.

I say 'major' because someone will claim that by winning the North-East Counties Under-16 Girl's Shield or something they've picked up a trophy, but that doesn't cut any ice with me. ;)

Jaffa, et al, why are you so obsessed about Newcastle (not) winning a trophy? Media getting to you with all their tripe? Keegan overkill, or just a closet ManUre fan?

For now, there is a new belief after a several years of not a ‘cat in hells chance’. That in itself is worth so much as a footie fan.

Now that the media have decamped from the soap opera stories, it will be be back to the nauseating commentators “can Newcastle win a trophy for the 1st time in 50 years that such a big club deserve ....blah“. I am a Newcastle fan and like most, we are not fans because we thought we might win a trophy, BUT IT IS GOOD TO HAVE HOPE – for a change.

Not Mr U. ****** (South Yorkshire) I hope. ;)

In some ways, yes. All I'm hearing is how Keegan will herald a new dawn at St James' Park – I'm hearing this from the media, from people connected with the club, and from a couple of Newcastle fans I know. Frankly, it's getting a little tiresome. I don't think Keegan is the right man for the job, and I think that the expectations that some people are placing on him are quite unrealistic. But who knows? Time may prove me wrong.

...or just a closet ManUre fan?
Hnag on a minute there – no need to be insulting! ;)

...we are not fans because we thought we might win a trophy...
Quite right too – a likelihood of silverware is no reason to support a team. And remember, it might be 40-odd years since you last won anything, but that's still three years less than the last time we won anything. :D

It's only the Carling Cup.

Honestly don't give a **** about this tournament, it just hurts being beaten by Spurs. :(

If it makes you feel better, you're not being beaten – you're being humiliated. :)

If it were City putting on this kind of winning display, the "You're getting mauled by the Tigers" chants would have started a good 25 minutes ago, silly hand gestures and everything. ;)
