Indeed – let's hope he makes a full and speedy recovery.

On a lighter note, in another of this evening's League Cup ties...

Premier League? You're having a laugh! :D

Congrats.

It would be nice if smaller clubs could really truly compete for the FA cup and Carling cup, but it is nice to see them get their 15 minutes of fame with the occasional giant-killing, if I can call Wigan a giant. :p

Damn. Charlton scored in the 90th minute!! 4-3 final score. Sounds like an incredible game though. If we play like that in the league we'll be up this year no doubt.

BTW, just as speculation, is anyone else starting to find this sudden mass of collapsing and seriously ill footballers suspicious?

There have been a few lower league clubs who have progressed quite far in the cups in recent years, so it can be done – mind, I'll qualify that by saying none of them have actually gone on to win the competition in question. And while Wigan might not exactly be Manchester United or Chelsea, fret not – we'll do one of them at the KC in the next round. ;)

Well, it's just two in the past week (at least, those are the only two I'm aware of) which out of the huge number of people who play football professionally each week is a tiny, tiny number. I'd wait and see exactly what's wrong with Clarke first too before drawing any conclusions...

I remember you calling this result a few weeks ago when the draw was made. Seems you have a prior commitment on the date of the next round which means you should draw one of the big boys.
Indeed. I've spent the past week formulating excuses that'll allow me to attend a potentially interesting cup-tie...

Hopefully when the draw's made we'll get a big team, we'll get them at home, and we'll get them on the Wednesday.

So is the next round the top clubs round? I hope we get Hull.. :)

Granted... but still, they're pretty f**kin' handy. ;) Excellent result for you chaps all the same. ;)

In slightly more depressing news Carlisle got beat by Coventry 2-0. They'll do well this season, very good side.

*shakes hands* well played... well played. :D

Though I had a discussion about this with my bro on Sunday morning, I can't help but think we'd have been better off maybe fielding a reserve side, I don't think we have the depth in the squad to sustain both a cup run and operation premiership, and out of those two... the latter is by far and away the more important of the two.

However, poor away support.

We've poor home support too... :p

Well tbh I didn't know I knew so little Coventry players until they went through the team. Adebola I knew, and he was brilliant. Our wingers struggled with your full backs all game. Coventry we're a stronger, and basically better side.

We fielded a strong but not complete side (Much the same as yourselves, I think) and we looked out of our depth. Coventry back 4 didn't look so great either if I'm being honest, but for 80% of the game we we're defending, so that didn't really matter.

On the support note, I was disappointed all round. We look to get 10,000 for home League games, and there was 5500 last night, with 450 od from Cov. Not great all round.

Third in the Premier League at the moment, by all accounts – that's a place in the Champions League qualifiers come the end of the season. By a very twisted and convoluted tarin of thought it could be claimed that the Tigers are almost on a par with Real Madrid following last night's result. Ace. :p ;)

Meanwhile, it looks as if Arsenal fans' 'Chelski' digs could come back to bite them on the Arsene, as news breaks that David Dein has sold his share of the club to a firm co-owned by a Russian billionaire.

Alisher Usmanov's firm – Red and White Holdings – doesn't have control of the club but is apparently looking to up its stake in the future.

****ing wierd really.. said they want to invest not takeover.. Dein can't have been short of offers so I don't know why he has chosen them.

In other news we get ****ing Sevilla in our group..

They've just said on Five Live that Dein is becoming Chairman of this company – so as I understand it he gets to sell his shares, make £75m and still have some degree of involvement with the club. That might have sweetened the deal for him.

Ah ok. So he is still involved in some way, that makes more sense. Thanks.

It'll be Sevilla.

True enough I suppose. Steau Bucharest as well, thats not a bad one.

Sporting Lisbon as well as Roma for United. Inter look to have done well so far.

Group E
BARCELONA
Lyon
Stuttgart
Rangers

That is a hard group, I would not like to predict the top 2.

Group F
MANCHESTER UNITED
Roma
Sporting Lisbon
Dynamo Kiev

Indifferent, we'll see. Not the easiest group but not the strongest.

Good result for Arsenal, it's good to see the midfielders continue to produce.

Also, I just saw that Samuel Eto'o will be out for at least 2 months after suffering a thigh strain in a friendly on Wednesday.

Hmm... we've called a press conference for tomorrow morning, the rumours are it's to unveil the signing of Wigan's Caleb Folan. A quick bit of research reveals that the forward has a very poor goal-to-games ratio and a recurring knee injury, so he does seem like the sort of player we'd go for.

Bloody hell. :(
