I've had my rMBP a couple weeks and never noticed any ghosting. Have an LG display. Today I noticed some image retention on this background color:

http://www.historum.com/

I've never noticed it anywhere else before. Do they all do this?

I'm beginning to think all the LG panels do [or will eventually]. This is my 3rd (1st had image retention; 2nd had giant dent in the screen), and I inspected it VERY closely at the Apple store and for the first week afterward. It has now developed image retention over time. It's an LG panel. But, it's not too bad at the moment (I really have to look for it), and it seems like getting another panel would have a higher probability of not pleasing me than keeping this one, so I'm going to stick with what I have.

Besides, it's got a 1 year warranty, so if it develops into something really bad I'll swap it out then.

But I will say -- as soon as they come out with a retina OLED screen -- I'm snatching that sucker up.

Received my first replacement today, backlight bleeding galore AGAIN. There is also very small chips in the aluminum casing. I'm gonna get another replacement once one of the apple guys call me back and if the 2nd replacement is just as bad I'm probably gonna have to look at tother options. =/

Hello,

I found a pretty reliable way to reproduce this issue.

Set your desktop background to the darkest of the 3 solid gray backgrounds that come with OS X.

Then, using Preview, open up a picture of a black and white checkerboard (LIKE THIS ONE --> https://discussions.apple.com/servlet/JiveServlet/showImage/2-19260095-146247/CB_1.jpg).

Then, cover your screen with something opaque so that you can see the minimize button for Preview, but not the checkboard pattern itself. This will prevent your retinal-retention from confusing the issue.

After about 15 minutes, minimize the checkerboard image and uncover your screen. If your display has the problem, you will likely see the ghosted image pretty clearly. It stayed on my rMBP for a while (i.e. one reboot to rule out software + 10 to 15 minutes until it faded completely from view).

Here's the thing though...

I never saw this problem until I read this thread or performed this test. My display has been great so far. So, I really don't plan on returning it, because I don't think it's going to be an issue for me. I do have the 3-year Apple Care though, so if it get's worse, I'll just get them to fix it.

Cheers,

Peter

Pretty good for a laptop actually. What are you expecting? Velvety blacks with no trace of light? You'll need to get a MVA panel from Eizo and no brighter than 120nits for that. Or maybe I am missing something?

i loved it for the first day, and then there was severe image retention on the second day i had it. i sent it back to apple. should be back on wednesday

My first rMBP has color uniformity issues (red on one side of the screen, yellow on the other). Apple sent me an advance replacement, and the color uniformity is great on that one, but it has very, very slight image retention issues that are only noticeable with the checkerboard test. I could live with the image retention if it doesn't get worse since the screen is otherwise fantastic...but that's the rub -- will the image retention get worse over time? I'll have to think about which to keep...

disappointed

I've been traveling to the apple store back and forth since I got my first rmbp last Saturday. This is my 5th unit. It has a yellow gradient from the top to the bottom. But I am exhausted now. I will keep this one if there is no other issues.

I am wondering where did you guys get the samsung screens from. All the five units I've got so far are LGs. I have the standard middle configuration, 2.6+512+8.

1st unit: the best screen so far. Problem was there is a cracking sound coming from the bottom shell. I visited the genius bar and they told me I could either replace the bottom shell, or the machine. Since I did not want to pay a visit the apple store again, I took the replacement, which turned out to be a huge mistake: the first one has the best display among all five...

2nd unit: misalignment of the top lid and the body. Yellowish screen.

3rd unit: Yellowish screen & fan noise. I took the 2nd and 3rd units back right after I spotted the issue. Each time Apple sales gave me replacement, but I was told if I want another exchange, I would have to go through the genius bar.

4th unit: it's a 33rd week production (serial number *J6*), others are 32nd week ones. I was happy when I saw the serial number on the box. However, it has serious IR...

5th unit: the one I am using now. Still yellowish screen. Calibrated the screen, but still there's a yellow gradient on it from the top to the bottom. There's no dead pixel, no IR, no noise. I think I should be happy... I am really tired of making an appointment, driving back and forth, waiting inline, explaining issues, and then get the same thing...

While I was waiting in line today, I checked some of their display models. As Nathan mentioned, most of them are Samsung models. I agree Samsung screens are better than LG ones in general. But still, if you open gridded webpages like here in safari, you'll find the bottom row is more yellowish than the first row on the top, especially on the lower left corner, even on all the samsung screens. I think it is the status quo of the quality of retina display.

I own an ipad 2 and an iphone 4. I heard of some similar screen issues on the new ipad and iphone 4s, but I did not really follow the scene. Did apple make efforts to improve the quality of the retina display on those devices? Are the overall quality of the retina displays on iphone 4s and the new ipad getting any better as time goes by?

I feel your pain. I went through the same experience 2 weeks ago and received my 8th unit until I was somewhat satisfied and exhausted from wasting my time and effort to playing the exchanging game repeatedly. Through all of the Samsung and LG screens I replaced I found out that LGs are dimmer, possess IR issues, and has minimal backlight bleeding. As for the Samsung displays I noticed significant backlight bleeding on 3/4 rMBPs I tested, however it was brighter.

Currently I am using a LG screen which is practically perfect with a uniformed black background in a dark lighting condition and has no bleeds whatsoever. The only problem I am experiencing is weird pop/cracking noises randomly when the computer is running every once in a while. It almost feels like the unibody is contracting to something inside or either the hinge is loose, otherwise I am perfectly happy with this machine.

Samsung screen here. No backlight bleed. (perfect black background with pure black image without any bleed). No IR. No dead pixels.

Perfect uniform white.

Slightly blueish in appearance. The best screen I've ever seen.

Got my MBPr on 16/8 and the Apple logo is kinda pink-ish and also have ir (LG) :/ and it makes a weird buzz noise like this one (https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/1413174/) next week i will receive a new one, hope it's a samsung. on the other hand i don't have any dead pixel or smth and the white is also good. anyway, i'll see when the next one is here next week

2.6/16/512

Boto, it seems my first rmbp had the same issue. A way to reproduce the 'random' sound was to press the bottom shell a little bit, then press the edges. You can press on those screw positions to see if they are tightened properly as well. In my case there were 2 loose screws on the bottom case.

I went to the apple store again this afternoon and showed the manager the yellow tint on my screen. I exchanged the rmbp for an cmbp with anti-glare hi-res display.

Now I am happy. The color is so much nicer and brighter on this display. The texts are sharper and clearer on the retina display, but the tint and gradient on the retina display really bother me. Moreover, cmbp dissipates heat better, which suits me better as I constantly have to run large matlab programs. I will upgrade the ram to 16g on this one, then I will be all set. I will probably wait for one more year to purchase the rmbp.

Indeed, it was a wise decision. rMBP needs some time to get on rails...

What are your model's specs?

Congratulations :)

I have absolutely NO complaints with my rMBP!! Sure, the screen doesn't compare to the Kuro, but it's the best damn computer screen I've ever owned!!

You've never owned an IPS desktop display? They are better still. Faster response and better color space. Isn't too miraculous when you deal with NEC, Eizo and LaCie every day. Nice in a laptop though, yes.

I should've clarified... Best laptop screen!

Thank you : ) Mine is 2.7 GHz i7 + 1TB + 8GB version. They only have this specs with anti-glare high resolution display in stock. I don't want to waste my time and energy any more so I take it. They gave me the price difference back. I actually wanted the 2.6 GHz + 750G model to save some money for upgrades on rams and SSD. But anyway, I have no complains about apple's customer services. They are very nice and reasonable. Hope they will improve the overall quality of their retina displays.

I just had my yellow-gradient Samsung panel (LSN) replaced at the Genius Bar with a LG screen (LP).

I explained to the Genius that the whole reason why I wanted the rMBP was because of the best screen, and it was upsetting that mine had a colour issue when I'd seen others that don't. He gave me no trouble and ordered a new screen in which took 7 days to arrive.

I can immediately tell that this screen is better with even uniformity, the last one had a slight yellow hue to the bottom half of the panel. So if you have a screen with weird colour uniformity that you're unhappy with I'd highly recommend taking it to the Genius bar.

I had owned 3 rMBPs with LG panel before due to the IR issue.

The 1st one comes with IR out of box and the screen is yellower than early 2011 Hi-Res 15" MBP. Both of them have similar brightness but dimmer than mid 2011 MBA.

The 2nd and 3rd ones start developing IR after one month and one week normal usage.

Fortunately, I got them all returned to Apple. I've learned the lesson that is never be the early adopter from now on.

My first Retina MacBook Pro was fine. It had an LG panel and no ghosting and image retention issues. After calibration colors were good.

Yesterday my computer stopped booting, so the Apple Store gave me a replacement computer instead.

This one has a Samsung panel. No ghosting or retention issues. Colors at default looked pretty close to calibrated values. Still did a color calibration and everything look swell.

Other that the IR issue, overall is the Samsung panel brighter and cooler than the LG? What is your specification?

I'm seeking a second replacement and I've asked if there is any way Apple can instruct the factory to use a Samsung Panel!

I was wondering who here has had any experience sending their rMBP in for service from Apple for the IR issue. Any time frame for return or what they did to repair it? I sent mine in 8 days ago and they still have it. They do say they have reproduced the IR and will "fix" the issue. As of right now I do not know what they plan on doing or when the computer will be returned. I was out of the 14 day replacement time so they would not give me a new one. They are also diagnosing it and other issues have arisen like going to sleep randomly when working on it.
