Its got nothing to do with race/age/gender. Its about exploiting an individual to have them camp out for a few nights, to make some money, while you get to sell the product and huge markup. These people are not buying for themselves.

Your from the UK, so your must be aware of the organised gangs that operate. As below, you can say its not illegal... though if you scratch under the surface, there is a dark underbelly. Though seeing a child ask you for money seems quite innocent and legal right??

http://news.bbc.co.uk/panorama/hi/front_page/newsid_9618000/9618038.stm

You really have to ask why these people are prepared to camp days in the cold. I assure you that noone on these forums would like to be exploited like this, you have to ask why they do it......

It happens everywhere. My place of work is just aside of Manchester Arena. I see this everytime there a big show tickets on the box office. People camp for days outside and you can even see on the day of the sale, people (usually very old, or young kids) getting their tickets and handing them after to other guys in a McDonalds place inside the Arena complex where they get back for them whatever money they have been promised. It appears that police turns a blind eye on this.

My question is, how do you tackle or prevent something from happening if it is simply immoral and not against the law? Unfortunately they will always find way to do it, regardless of what you do to stop them.

One way could be Apple excepting only a payment through a credit/debit card registered to a person on the country where the store is based, not sure if that is possible though.

The Reality of the iPhone 6 lines - a documentary

Race was never brought up. This is about exploitation. Unless you choose to ignore the facts presented at the where individuals, who's race was never mentioned, giving thier purchased iphones to a minder/buyer.

----------

It was locked down, cause a rational discussion was completely derailed by muppets who have no idea what racism is, just like what has happened on this thread.

Ah, yes the exploitation of some poor people having to stand in line and purchase a phone. That is the focus entirely. There is no way anyone could point out racist instances at all.

Well, now that we are done bsing around, the real outrage here is simply ******** and entitlement. I find it extremely hard to believe that people are merely concerned about the will being of those standing in line. Because if that was truly the case this issue would have never went viral in the first place.

I find it amusing how you mention "facts" when there are little to had in this thread. Where exactly are you getting your data from? Curious minds do wonder.

I don't think the video is racist. I'm from the UK, and generally the racism-of-choice here is against Asians of the Middle East/Pakistan/India area. Not China.

However, the lines here were similar - it wasn't Asians, it was mostly Chinese, and the same again - it was a well oiled machine of people who did not look well off being sheperded around by so-called 'ring-leaders'. Not racist - just what happened.

Racism aside, the video is sad, and exactly what I saw here in the UK. As far as I can see the following would fix this overnight, and bring back the 'fun' queues...

1) Lock iPhones to a single apple ID for activiation for 30-60 days. Activate in store
2) One per person - sorry guys buying for wives/girlfriends and vice versa. Want an iPhone? Queue.
3) Apple to pay for security overnight. It's not a big ask considering the margins. Police the queue properly. You know about the people pushing in.
4) Apple staff to give out reservation tickets AS PEOPLE ARRIVE. Reservation ticket doesn't guarantee a phone, just your place in the queue.

Job done?

The demographics of the UK scalpers appear to have varied on location i.e areas close to populations whose heritage lies in the Indian sub-continent the scalpers were indeed mainly Pakistani/Bangladeshi & Indian. There was indeed a heavy Chinese presence at some stores & thanks to the EU, the East Europeans are now getting in on the act.

I agree entirely that your proposals would help to solve this. Ultimately, certainly here in the UK, I see the authorities/Apples hand being forced, as it's clear this will eventually end in tears - a serious assault or much worse.

Yes we discussed this both in the queue and here on macrumours... I'd say we're 2 launches away from some of the bullet point list I mentioned.

The assaults I believe we're not far away at all even this time round.

I'm not going to comment on race issues but the problem here is solely Apple's fault. Why? In the past only upgraded and new contracts were allowed to get phones on release day. Those days are obviously over. Now anyone with money can buy a phone. Apple should put restrictions on who can buy release day phones then cater to scalpers and others a week or so afterwards. Apple should take into consideration the people who support them not those who profit from Apple

I think that they should only do pre orders and if you don't pre order than your SOL....This standing in line crap and waiting for days and days and rushing in to get your phone...really? Just pre order it and wait from the comfort of your own home.
I think this whole thing is rediculous as well.. I mean, how are they even able to tell the people which phone and color and size they want?

People are so quick to call something racist nowadays. Even stating a fact or something you witnessed that has a relation to race is automatically labelled racist.

great points...

a little thought, if I may... with your #4, there prob wouldn't be a huge line overnight and hence less of a need for security... I understand there will still be people on the line but when that 8am bell hits, someone with a speakerphone or some flashing LED sign right outside the Apple calling out numbers... they can do it like how passengers are boarded with flights; take in like 20-50 people at a time, depending on the sales staff...

Its pathetic how people turn so many topics on MR into racist threads.

And its the people calling others racist. Please go troll somewhere else.

Agreed.

If Apple simply did like they have in years past (contract only phones sold early on, no non-contract phones sold for the first month or so) then this black market problem wouldn't exist.

Not that Apple is going to do that though (heaven forbid you cost your company a sale!) until the publicity of this nonsense gets too the point where they can no longer ignore it.

Why?

I came from a 4S, MacBook Pro, and iPad retina.

Why should I not be permitted to get my unlocked iPhone 6, to get a cheaper rate on ATT that saves me $150 over 2 years?

It's not racism! These are people buying multiple iPhones with a sole intent of selling them for higher margins. They're not going to people who are actually buying The phone to enjoy them. This video is showing that gone are the days of passionate Apple users.

The only thing racist about this video are the people claiming it is simply because they are Asian. If anyone is racist, it's you. You're making racism a higher priority over what's actually happening. Please.

A PHONE is higher priority than racism!?!?!? :roll eyes:
eff your phone. liberate my people:p

The oppressor doesn't see the same injustices that the oppressed can see. Willing to bet that middle class white apple customers standing in line were not spoken to by police like that. The disrespect was insane.

The majority of U.S. customers that Apple needs to take care of when a phone debuts is people on contract.

By allowing non-contract cash sales on day 1, Apple allowed a black market scalpers to take over which ruins the experience and frustrates its most valued U.S. customer base.

So really, while it might not be fair... you having to wait 30-60 days to buy a non-contract phone so that the main customer can get theirs without being shut out by scalpers is whats best for business & the customer.

You've added nothing to the discussion of this topic. All you did was cry about Racism. True there may be comments on YouTube that are racist but I'm pretty sure this video was embedded. I didn't see any comments. Wait I did see a comment.

Bunch of disgusting racist comments on that video aimed towards law abiding citizens no less. But they aren't white so it's perfectly fine I guess.

You're Racist! You were the first one to comment on this specific post about it being racist. Also you're comment is directed at a specific race/color. What's wrong with you? Why do you need to cry as soon as you see this video posted?

Also, I'm sure they were all "law abiding citizens".....

That's racist. Your singling out of a particular group is insanely disrespectful.

You people just have racist thoughts when you watched this video - be objective when viewing this video, not looking at a line of ethnically diverse bunch who is doing nothing illegal. Morally wrong but it's capitalism.

This is not a white man's world where other race can't wait in line. Just cause there are more of them don't mean it's a racist issue either.

But I can see how racially sensitive folk can say this is a racist video

lol

Save your white tears for someone who gives a damn. The video is what it is. There's no need to argue against it

Observations can be racist? If it walks like a duck, and quacks like a duck... Must be Asian.

Exactly. The video doesn't lie, nor do my eyes. I went to the Garden State Plaza Apple Store yesterday because they had some Verizon 6 128GB models in stock. There was a line of maybe 100 people, and easily 2/3 of that line was Chinese people.

Not trying to be rude but how does that make it better for the customer? Not every customer wants to be locked into a contract and should not be forced to enter a contract just so they can have the phone on launch day.

Who's racist now? Thanks for proving my original reply to everyone here.

Nothing substantial to your reply. So you attack me and also assume I'm white. Good Job.

I've seen the video. The topic is interesting but it comes from an angle that's both racist and nostalgic and that pretty much ruins the "documentary." There have always been iPhone scalpers, ticket scalpers, etc. Picking out areas with high concentrations of people from certain races and trying to turn it into a racial issue is ridiculous. The unstated thesis of the video is "In the good old days, the lines were just full of a big happy family of young, white Apple fans - today, they're filled with Asians who don't care at all about fellowship or our interests!"

I ordered a 6 online Sunday night for store pick-up.
Monday- Apple store grand central station nyc- 7:30am.

There was a short line for online order pick-up.
There were a bunch of people waiting in another line.
That line did not seem to be moving. Those waiting were sitting, laying down, half asleep, etc.
I asked the Apple employee, "What is that line for?"
She told me those are the walk ins.
She then yelled over to another employee, "Hey! Is anyone waiting on the walk ins?"
She was ignored. The walk in line was ignored. No one wanted to deal with them.
The first guy in the walk in line was still waiting to be helped when I left 15 minutes later.

I got the sense the Apple employees were disgusted by the so- called scalpers.

I wonder - How much do they pay these people to sit and wait there all day?

Like I said I ordered online Sunday and went down Monday AM and picked it up. They are not that hard to get.
