no worries, checked the firmware it came with and its up to date anyway.

hey, i'v installed soem stuff since and played around with new speeds, im very very pleased. boot time wasnt a huge improvement for me as i was using a hybrid ssd drive before (seagate momentus xt) about 9 second increase in speed (was around 23, now about 15 seconds)

no problems so far.

heres however, a comparison, before, after:

no trim enabled, yet?)

Enable TRIM and you'll see faster boot times!

My Samsung 830 is coming tomorrow and I was wondering how to get a clean copy of ML on it.

I am downloading ML so I can put it on an USB, but when I get my SSD, should I install ML with the transfer kit first, or should I install the SSD and then install ML on it?

If I do the second option, in what step would I be formatting the drive? Can this be done from the installer?

Thanks

I just did this. Make your ML usb drive. Make sure your computer boots with it. Now turn it off and install your ssd. Now boot the usb installer. The installer will let you run disk utility and you then format the drive. Then close disk utility and install ML.

Good luck!

I got my 830 512 GB installed in my 2010 MB Pro and with Blackmagic on my fresh new ML install and with TRIM enabled I'm getting 240 write and 256 read! Not bad for Sata II :)
The negotiated link speed is 3 gigabit, can anyone tell me if I need to worry about the sudden motion sensor as it's enabled?

Liking the speed boost :)

That's exactly what I ended up doing! Works beautifully :)

A few days ago, I bought the Samsung 830 256GB SSD for my early 2011 base 13" MBP. For some reason the SSD does not perform good in Windows 7 due to the disabled AHCI driver, but it it performs very good in Mountain Lion. I really do not want to do the hack to enable AHCI in Windows, because I might ruin my system, I will loose very important things in Windows such as sleep mode, unable to use the bootcamp drivers, etc.

I have a few questions:
1. Will the Samsung SSD have a lower lifespan in non-ahci mode?
2. Do you think that Apple will enable AHCI in the next bootcamp drivers update?

I'm not sure if this will help anyone: My primary OS is Mountain Lion and I use Windows 7 about twice a week.

Nice!

On Amazon DE prices are roughly the same compared to two weeks ago for the 512MB

Desktop Ed: €475 (up from €468 I bought at)
Notebook: €523,99
Basic: €525,98

No idea why the desktop ed is soo much cheaper than Basic when it comes with more bits.

How do I enable TRIM on my Samsung 830??
Is Trim Enabler compatible with Mountain Lion????

830 256GB drive not appearing in finder

Hi
just purchase a Samsung 830 256 GB drive and installed it in one of the bays in my 2008 Mac Pro running 10.6.8 snow leopard.

It's not appearing on the desktop, i've put in a different bay, changed the icy dock but the mac is not recognising it.

Just wondering if anyone has any suggestions

thanks

That's worrying. I've got a 2008 Mac Pro (same OS version) and was just about to buy the same drive.

Can anyone give me advice about whether I need Bootcamp? It seems from the posts that it's required for firmware updates and garbage collection. I don't have bootcamp and refuse to have windows running on my production machine. I really want a solid state boot drive, but not if I need to cock about with dual OSs and weird terminal commands. I need full compatability and a rock-solid system (under warranty)
Cheers

The crucial m4 does both in osx.

1. It depends on the price you paid, but the Samsung 830 is a good choice for an SSD.
2. At the moment you need Windows to update a Samsung 830's firmware. You can either install Windows on your MacBook Pro or you can use a friend's computer to do it. The firmware for this particular drive hasn't been updated for a long time, so it's likely that your SSD will come with the latest version already on it...
3. See this guide for instructions on how to perform a fresh install of Mountain Lion.

Perfect, thanks Clyde. M4 it is

Let me clarify my earlier statement, sorry. Samsung has downloadable firmware that you can burn to a bootable CD and use in a Mac. Technically it's not OSX per se (since osx doesn't boot up), but you don't have to do it on a windows machine.

And there's not weird terminal commands, after it boots of the CD you're asked to update the software.

Hope that helps.

I'm checking back in with hopes that someone can help me figure out my problem with random kernel panics and beachballs on my 13" 2009 MBP and the Samsung 830.

Last week, I bit the bullet and decided to do a fresh install of snow leopard on the SSD. However, the install failed multiple times at various points. Needing a working system, I put the old hard drive back in the laptop and moved the SSD to the external (OWC Mercury Pro). For kicks, I tried to install OSX on the SSD again and it worked perfectly. I Transferred my user data to the SSD, played around with it for a few days with no issues, so I moved it over to the laptop. A couple of days later I had another kernel panic.

Next, I thought I would try upgrading to mountain lion and see if that helps. Same issue. Mountain lion failed to install multiple times on the SSD. Moved the SSD to the external, booted from my mountain lion install USB, and mountain lion installed perfectly. SSD is back in my laptop and I'm getting a few beachballs here and there, but so far no kernel panics although it is still early.

Does this help narrow down my problem at all? I'm thinking it could be the SATA cable but I guess I would expect my problems to be more severe if the cable was bad but I'm far from an expert on these things. I suppose it could still be a RAM issue, although I would expect the RAM to cause problems with the SSD in the enclosure as well. Anything else I might be missing? Is my logic board failing?

Also, if it helps, before I installed the SSD and since then I noticed that my computer is not entering "safe sleep" properly. When I use to calibrate the battery, I would run the computer down to zero and let the computer sleep for a few hours. When I hit the power button my system would be restored back to where it was. Now it does a full reboot and when it starts up I get a bunch of errors (clock set to wrong date, approval for mdnsresponder etc.).

Sorry for the long post, but school starts in a couple of weeks and I really don't have the money to buy a new computer, so I'm really hoping to keep this thing going for a while. Of course, apple care ran out last month so I'm a bit stuck there. Any help you can offer is greatly appreciated!
