Will the 2.5 - 3.5 adapter work with my iMac if I were to install this?

What other parts will I require? I have read a few tutorials and have built comps in the past so know what Im doing, just would like a hand on selection.

Many thanks

Today I received more port in the mail that replaces the Optical Drive for a second hard drive. I recently bought a Samsung 830 SSD that is in my main drive port. My 750gb Momentus XT hard drive is in the optical port.

All of my applications are installed on my SSD and on my HDD.

First question: am I able to delete my applications off the HDD if I'm just running them on my SSD?

Second: If I'm accessing anything in Finder that's in the HDD, finder rainbow wheels for a good 20-30 seconds. If I stay in the HDD folder it will continue doing so. I tried setting my "Home" setup as my user on that drive but that caused Finder (and other apps running) to rainbow wheel. How do I fix this?

EDIT
Third: I can't actually log into my main account (the one with the "Home" from my HDD linked) because it says an error is occurring.

You want to have a boot & apps drive (ssd) and then a home folder deive, right? You need to move your home folder to your Seagate and then point in os x to the location of your home folder. Follow the instructionsin the link below (it isn't written for Mountain Lion but I'm sure the steps are still similar.)

128 gb Samsung 830 for $90; Macbook Pro 6,2 8gb RAM running Mountain Lion; CCC for the install; set the SSD to be the start up disk and TRIM Enabler; no problems so far.

220 MB/s Blackmagic writes; 250 MB/s read. 20 seconds for a cold boot; 40 seconds to reboot from the login screen.

Great upgrade; also, since I've bought an SSD, the prices should REALLY start to plummet now. You're welcome.

- That's 20 seconds to shut down from the login screen? That doesn't seem right...

That's right. I tested it a few times. I assume there's no programs open at that point, just the background services.

Cold boot was 20 secs which is line with what other folks with the 2.4 I5 MBP 6,2 are reporting, give or take a second.

That's right. I tested it a few times.

- That's strange. Mine (see signature) takes just a second or two. From within the operating system with apps open it takes perhaps 4 or 5 seconds to full shutdown. 20 seconds from the login screen seems way to much...
I have a boot time of about 16 seconds to login, which is not that different from yours, so I don't get why yours takes so long to shut down.

Same exact setup here. MBP6,2; 830 from the $89 sale; ML; 6gb RAM; TRIM Enabler

~20 second cold boots. ~23 seconds to reboot from login screen.

Pretty happy with the upgrade! Apps load almost instantly as well.

You intrigued me, so I ran few more tests.

Closed all programs from an active session and clicked on shut down - *poof* - a couple of seconds and it was down; faster than I could reach over and hit the Start button on the iPhone stopwatch.

I rebooted from the logon screen and got times of 20, 25, 30, 35 and 38 seconds. My first round of testing was three attempts that took between 38 to 40 seconds.

I logged in and hit shut down again and that took 20 seconds.

I don't think I'm going to pursue this much further as these shutdown times seem rather arbitrary. Besides, the programs, from XCode to iTunes snap open and that's what I want to see. I don't really reboot or shutdown the machine much.

However, I am a little curious as to why the temps are running about 10c hotter than usual. 60 vs 50 for some light surfing and iTunes.

- If it doesn't bother you, then you might as well leave it be. But when you're getting a deviation of 100 % (20 to 40 seconds reboot), something must be wrong. My boot times vary a little as well, but no more than 4 or 5 seconds...

In any case, I'm glad you're happy with the SSD. I am as well! :)

Where is this $89 sale happening?!

It was a Newegg deal last weekend. Back up to $120 now but, hang tight, it will surely drop again.

Normally, I would have tracked the slow reboot times down, but ever since I bought a Russian watch, my OCD has been in remission.

Im happy with my Samsung 830 512gb but i feel like my battery is discharging a bit faster then before, is there anyway to check up whats eating the battery faster?

Nice and simple

Just put one of the 256gb units into a mid-2010 mbp to replace a filed own ssd. I love the fact that everything just works including TRIM using TRIM Enabler. Sounds like I won't have to worry about firmware updates either.

Hey all,

I've had this drive for about two weeks now and am running into a couple issues, I've read through the thread and it seems like some similar stuff has popped up so want to make sure my plan of attack is solid.

-2012 15" MBP. Stock RAM. SSD is in the optical drive.
-Installed the drive, CCC'd the OS over to the SSD, set SSD to boot, rebooted, wiped HDD, rebooted.
-Repaired my permissions

-Boot/Rebooting is super fast. Drive is fast. No issues there

-Every so often (once or twice per usage session) I get the beachball where everything is locked up for 10 to 20 seconds and then goes back to normal.

Having read through the thread, this is what I'm thinking:

EDIT: I'm going to do a fresh recovery install (CMD+R) of ML tonight.

1. Enable TRIM. I don't know if this will help, but it seems to work for some people so why not.
2. Check firmware. I should be at the most recent (considering I JUST got the drive, but still)
3. Open up the laptop again and double check to make sure everything is properly connected. It should be, but maybe the SATA cable isn't seated all the way

If none of this resolves the issue, any ideas on where I should go with this? I've seen mentions of swapping out/upgrading RAM, but considering the laptop is 2 weeks old is this really a viable problem?

Thanks for any help!

Just installed a 256GB 830 SSD yesterday and am very impressed with the performance.

I'm a bit confused though. After removing GB's files on my disk to free up space, the amount that is reported as free in about mac/ more infor /storage and via the terminal prompt does not seem to be changing. Is this the way SSD's work or something? Will it catch up later?

Most of my files were removed through Steam (right click on game and choose delete local content) could this be affecting it?

I do have TRIM enabled...

Cheers :)

Actually it looks as if it might be down to an ongoing Timemachine backup which is locking the files. Anyone else seen this?

Disable your *local* TimeMachine backups.

I bought the 2012 MBP 13" and looking to install the Samsung 830.

I noticed on the rMBP I returned that it had a Samsung drive installed but whether it was the 830 or not is another matter. What Samsung drive is used in the SSDs that Apple supply?

Yeah, I think I might. Otherwise trying to manage my data within the 256GB of my SSD is going to be a bit of a challenge!

Thanks for the info.

You may want to just leave the local backups enabled. I know it is troubling to see the space disappear, but OS X manages that space for you. If the space is required by the user for storage, OS X will shrink the local backups space used. You can just ignore the local backups space used and it won't matter.

It can be a useful feature by providing a backup version of data files when you are away from your Time Machine disk.

I just installed a 830 256gb SSD in my Early 2011 MBP. I used the free trial of CCC, used an external enclosure for another HD I had. It was all a super breeze! My comp is crazy fast now and eerily silent! It also runs cooler than it did with the stock 5400rpm HD.
