I have Applecare so I'm going to see if they'll replace the SATA cable. Thats the cable used to connect the HD to the motherboard.

I am going to bring my external enclosure in and show them my laptop working with it and then not working in the internal so that they will believe me that it's the cable and not my SSD, which I know they will say is the problem. (I got a new one sent and same problem, so I know it's not the ssd)

If that work for u let me know like that I can change it too.

now I can see the ssd but I can't install Yosemite get an error every time I try... any help??

Did you format the drive first with Disk Utility? Go to the erase tab and select the drive then pick Mac OS Extended (Journaled) as the format in the dropdown its and apply the change.

Yes I did format first and nothing. The installation start and after a mins stop. I tried from my old system and a clean instalation from usb. Nothing :( any idea. I used the ssd in an external usb enclosure and I can install yosemite the i install the sdd to my internal and not working.

I can see internal and copy files but not install yosimite.

Yup something very weird going on here.

Still working totally fine on my external enclosure. Yosemite installs fine and I can run normally.

As soon as I put it into the internal the Yosemite install just never finishes, time keeps restarting.

100% not my SSD at this point.

I installed a samsung 840 EVO PRO SSD. Everything works fine and I have installed Yosemite. However, when I look to save a document in Word, Excel, or Powerpoint (I always had Microsoft Office Suite 2011 fro Mac), I get a very bad stuttering and blinking pop up page for the "save page" and it takes me forever to save the document. It seems like it is an incompatibility issue. I have checked compatibility on the page and says all is fine.

I tried to fresh install of Office Suite and still does not work properly. Any ideas before I go to the Genius Bar today?

Hi, did u fix the problem..I still looking any fix.

I doubt that.
Release date of OS X 10.9.2: 25th February 2014
Current date: 7th May 2014

That you downloaded the app means nothing. It is also important, that you tell us which app you used, and how stable your system is.

I used this for TRIM: http://www.cindori.org/software/trimenabler/

Also, I know you got nit-picky on the release dates of 10.9.2, but it was more than 2 months old when I wrote, so yes 3 months was just fine to say. And now we're up to 10.9.5 and 2008 15" MBP is still running like a champ and feels so fast!

Hello, I've replaced the superdrive in my iMac with an 840 Evo SSD. Now I have to update the firmware but using an external superdrive does not work. I couldn't find out a way to create a bootable usb with the update. Can someone please help me?

Informative Thread!

I also have the Late-2011 13inch Macbook Pro with stock storage, Still and amazing machine! (use this machine everyday for work and for watching movies :))

I want to ask you guys something, How is your macbook after a year or 2 with the SSD and Upgraded Ram on it?

Cheers!

In a word, AWESOME!

WOW! THANKS! :)

No problem when updating say from mavericks to yosemite? also how about TRIM? Lastly, when you got the SSD did you uncheck the "Put hard disk to sleep when possible Under settings-energy saver"? to prolong the life and speed of the SSD without using TRIM?

My apologies for a sort-of cross-post from another thread (I was trying to find this thread after I unsubscribed to it), but has anyone here actually had an 840 Evo die? A friend of mine who got my old Mac all of a sudden started getting 15MBps reads and writes and erasing the drive/repartitioning/etc. did nothing. I'm actually shipping him the original drive (750GB Toshiba hard drive) so he can rule out that it's not the computer (2012 13" MacBook Pro), but I thought I'd pick the brains of the collective group, since that firmware bug seems to only affect slow reads, right?

No please no worries.
Anyway, Most of the people i work with has a macbook and upgraded the SSD from samsung. No one ever had a problem with the SSD, the only problem I knew that they had is the speed of the actual SSD over time (maybe 6 months and so). They are the ones that don't use TRIM.

So I think when you use TRIM with the third party SSD, will just be fine and only a little slow to those who are not using TRIM.

Thanks - I know of quite a few people using 840 Evos (some I've installed in older machines at work) and some use TRIM and some don't - I understand that lack of TRIM could hurt performance a bit, especially if there's a high turnover of data, but that's mostly related to writes, correct? The drive in question has dropped to incredibly slow reads and writes in about a week or so...

Did your friend try returning the SSD and getting a new one from samsung? I think samsung has amazing warranty with their SSD's.
I think your friend got a not so good SSD because the low speeds he encounter in a week is a real sign of problem.

Yeah - he's going through their warranty process next - I used the drive for over a year - probably about 90% of the time with TRIM enabled and maybe about 70% capacity used and ended up giving the computer to him with the drive. A couple of weeks later (he's had the computer for about three), this started happening, so I'm guessing it was bad luck. I certainly felt bad and was trying to troubleshoot from half a day away (and have since dug up the original hard drive and sent it his way in the meantime). He's tech savvy enough that he did the usual tests and is in the process of getting a swap with Samsung, but I thought I'd check with the smart people on here if they've seen anything like it.

Samsung SSD 840 Pro Performance Degradation?

I have a 256GB Samsung SSD 840 Pro I installed some time ago. This drive primarily holds the OS X operating system and applications. I'm down to about 50GBs of space remaining.

It seems like my system has slowed a bit, especially with the Adobe apps. Although I have 16GBs of memory installed, I know that my MacBook will use drive space when I have a lot of apps open or a larger file.

At what point should I consider getting a bigger SSD?

Being down to 50GB of free space should not cause the system to slow. Do you think you are getting slow disk access speeds lately? Are you running TRIM?

Actually, I stand corrected. I just ran Blackmagic and my speeds appear to be fine. How full should I allow my drive to get before I upgrade?
