I can't imagine very many people buying a Microsoft Xbox, who don't already own a Windows PC.
And if your PC is still modern enough to run those same games, why even buy an Xbox?

This is the same argument I constantly hear with PlayStation fanboys whenever one of their precious exclusives gets a PC port. They always go "then what's the point of buying a console then?" Some prefer playing from a box. If they want the convenience and simple form factor of a console that their preference, just like it's some preferences to be on a desktop instead. An Xbox can be used for the living room for media consumption as well as a convenient Game Pass machine.

The majority of Sony's exclusives are on PC now and they made the commitment each new PS5 game would come to PC after at minimum a year or two after the console launch, and despite that the PS5 is still outselling the competition and is on track to outpace the PS4's lifetime sales.

Do you want a PC? If the answer is no, then there you go.
But it's a console from a PC maker! If you prefer Mac over Windows, you don't buy a Microsoft Xbox and if you don't like desktop computing at all, why not choose a Sony PlayStation? The only Xbox customers I can imagine have a somewhat positive or neutral sentiment towards Microsoft and Windows, but nonetheless wouldn't buy and maintain a modern Gaming PC, be it only for the costs. It's reasonable to own both a PC and an Xbox, if one of them is not meant for gaming.

Microsoft makes the Windows operating system, not PCs themselves (unless you count the Surfaces which are not really gaming machines.)

Also worth noting Sony also makes PC components too despite the PlayStation being a core product.

PlayStation doesn't have Game Pass, and it's not gonna have future Bethesda titles, and when the ActiBlizz merger is completed it won't have future ActiBlizz games minus Call of Duty.

So we just gonna ignore preferences then? If people want to play on Xbox, that's their choice.

And that's important why? Microsoft is trying the biggest takeover the gaming industry has ever seen for the same reason they bought Nokia. As a last attempt to monopolize an industry, which they've already lost to the competition fair and square on the merits of their platform. People just like the PlayStation better.

And that's important why?

Because it's not as black and white as you think it is. There's things Xbox has that PlayStation doesn't, just like there's things PlayStation has that Xbox doesn't. And once Microsoft starts releasing games people want that will become more and more evident.

if you think Microsoft would be a monopoly just from ActiBlizz alone you do not know anything about the game industry lmao.

I don't think there are games like Sonic or Mario anymore, which could sell consoles for that one title.

I don't think Xbox will become a monopoly. I think the business will go bankrupt over this mega deal, just like the Nokia takeover, which was Microsoft's biggest and last attempt to create a smartphone OS. Far fewer people than expected/hoped will switch to Xbox, only because they want to keep playing one particular game. Instead the billions spend will drag on the financial results and call into question, if that money can ever be recouped? A future Microsoft manager will decide "it's not worth it" and halt all investments into Xbox.

This is a PS5 thread - let’s not turn it into a PS5 vs Xbox thread?
Get whichever console you like and enjoy it.
Now, back to PS5………

Spider-Man? Insomniac's Spider-Man game was the best selling PS Studios game on the PS4 selling over 30 million units. Many people bought PS4s just for Spider-Man, and Sony sold special Spider-Man edition PS4 Slims and Pros. Hell a lot of people bought PS5s for Miles Morales too since the game came with a raytracing remaster of Spider-Man PS4.

So for Xbox since Halo Infinite's live service has been kinda mid, Starfield is set as their big flagship system seller. It's been 8 years since Bethesda's last single player RPG Fallout 4, so to have a new one set in a brand new IP, with legacy mechanics returning along with brand new ones, a lot of people are excited to see what world Bethesda weaves with a blank slate. Bethesda RPGs do stupid numbers and still have large active playerbases because of how large they are and how they let the player do whatever they want. Case in point, look at the New Vegas and Skyrim modding scenes.

To put in perspective, Fallout 4 on launch day sold over 12 million. That's 12 million in ONE DAY. So you better believe people will buy Xboxes just for Starfield.

Uh huh. You do know Microsoft is way more than just Xbox right? They are one of the richest companies in the world. They ain't gonna go bankrupt buying ActiBlizz, as Windows alone makes enough money from OEM licensing to buy ActiBlizz five times over.

You know they almost pulled the plug on Xbox with the Xbox One. But they decided against it and spent that doomed generation prepping for the future. During the Xbox One generation they bought Mojang, you know, the makers of Minecraft, the biggest game on the planet, and under Microsoft Minecraft has expanded beyond imagination and is bigger than it was back when Mojang were independent.

If Microsoft were gonna pull the plug on Xbox, they would not be buying ActiBlizz right now.

Of course they did. But how many people would not have bought a PlayStation, if only all the other games without this one would exist? And how many people would sell their console and switch over to the other one, if Spider-man became an Xbox exclusive? A game can be a lot of fun and wildly successful without being a game changer in the console wars.
Bethesda RPGs do stupid numbers and still have large active playerbases because of how large they are and how they let the player do whatever they want.
And who stops other game studios from making equally great games for PlayStation? It’s like with the streaming services. Most people won’t longterm subscribe to multiple services. They decide for one service they like the most and even if there is a great series on another platform, they may watch it for a month and then unsubscribe again. It's not a firm commitment, I will follow Activision wherever they go! Very few people will actually do that.
To put in perspective, Fallout 4 on launch day sold over 12 million. That's 12 million in ONE DAY. So you better believe people will buy Xboxes just for Starfield.
According to Microsoft 70% of all console buyers choose PlayStation versus 30% Xbox. They say they must be allowed to buy Activision, because they are the underdog.
You do know Microsoft is way more than just Xbox right? They are one of the richest companies in the world.
Which will make the tale of their downfall into an epic explain video on Youtube. Up there with the "Fall of GE".
If Microsoft were gonna pull the plug on Xbox, they would not be buying ActiBlizz right now.
That's exactly what they said about Windows Phone. Microsoft wouldn't have spend $7B on Nokia, if they didn't believe in the success of their own OS. In fact they only wished Nokia would strengthen their week hand. That Microsoft even feels the need to acquire Activision is proof that they themselves don't trust in the strength of Xbox's business model on its own. This is a(nother) desperate grasp at straws for survival.

I didn’t knew the Xbox included a couch accessory. 🛋️

MS Couch: the seat cushions are swapped out every 6 months, like it or not.

Meta Couch: any papers, coins, or bank notes dropped between the seat cushions are gone forever because they’re transferred to an archive somewhere in the MarkMetaVerse™.

:apple:Couch: seat cushions are 2” narrow and 0.5” thin. Screw-in feet for the couch’s corners are only $999 extra, with rolling casters available for $5,999 (set of four). There are rumors of a :apple:Couch Pro and :apple:Couch Ultra launching sometime next year.

Okay I have had a PS5 shortly after launch and its just been collecting dust. But Metal Gear Solid and Spider-Man 2 have me pretty pumped. MGS is my all time favorite series. One thing though is I cannot stand the PS5 controller. I wish I could use the Xbox Elite 2 controller with PS5.

Instant buys for me:

- Spider-Man 2
- Assassins Creed Mirage

Haven't played the first, but Dragons Dogma 2 looks interesting too!

Did you guys see the 2023 showcase? It was pretty impressive.

To be honest the show had WAAAAAAAAAY too many multiplayer games that will most likely be cancerous live service titles.

At least Metal Gear is back from the dead and they're porting the entire series to modern hardware and PC so that makes me happy. MGS4 is FINALLY getting out of PS3 jail.

But the real highlight was Foamstars, AKA Adult Splatoon. The entire Splatoon community is ripping on this game hard.

Oh I didn’t catch MGS4. I thought it was just 1-3 and Delta that was shown. Any news on 4?

That’s a useless picture. It should be weighted towards actual revenue. The number of studios is meaningless.

No really, it conveys that there's a lot other fish in the sea besides Microsoft, some are as bigger or maybe even bigger - depends on which metric you use.

The point in the picture is to show that Microsoft is not close to becoming a monopoly in the gaming sector and that image easily communicates that imo

Precisely. You want a real monopoly, Tencent is right there. Tencent is the literal definition of a monopoly, as because of China's totalitarian economic laws literally all game software has to go through them. You wanna publish in China, gotta go through Tencent. It's made even worse when you consider how much of the industry Tencent has majority stakes in. https://www.ign.com/articles/tencen...ty-stakes-mainly-in-overseas-gaming-companies
