My brother has one. It's there, doing nothing. A play of RE4 here and there and something when he wants to play GTA7 but that's all.

Did you get the PC adapter? Worth it?

Feels like a VR thing in general.
I'd imagine there are quite a few Vision Pro's also "there, doing nothing".

It's a tech that can demo well and have some really interesting niche usages .. but mainstream seems like a tough slog.

This is sad. I was thinking about getting a Pro a couple of month in the future but man..

My Ps5 is working fine so, I think no thank you

During the Holiday's Best Buy was giving $300 in trade for a used PS5 towards the Pro on top of $100 off the price. That was $400 total.

A price rise was inevitable. SSD and RAM prices have shot up, and millions will buy a PS5 just to play GTA6.

PS5 is already overpriced and getting old.
The base PS5 and Series X are poor value now. The lack of AI supported upscaling means that many new titles look soft and low res on them - playing at 1080p rather than the marketed 4k/120. I will buy a PS5 Pro for GTA6. It's not a cheap console, but PC components are cheap either. Furthermore as PSSr improves, so will the PS5 pro but not the base.

Welp, with the news of yet another price increase (not that the system was a bargain at its current price) I just laid down the funds and picked up a pro... 😳 Why? Well wanted a little bit more than the standard 1tb of storage and since another TB would have put the price of the non pro (with disc drive) about the cost of the pro with its 2tb, I went that way kind of future proofing in a way maybe? I do have a 4k tv, but pretty basic bare bones 60hz but has sonys pro motion or whatever it's called (disabled it immediately)

So plan on picking up the disc drive after a slight cooling period. Not sure about the PlayStation Network. I'm guessing I'm going to need to make an actual account to actually use this thing? Especially being digital only (for now) 🤮

Will try not to return this system 😇

Kotaku make really good points

I don’t think anyone who wants to play gta6 will overlook and overpriced console and wait 12-18 months for a ps6. During that time gta6 spoilers and references will be everywhere.

Either way the Pro might not be worth it if the game will be capped at 30fps which is likely. This is due to the heavy simulation. It’s unlikely that Sony will allow rockstar to release frame rate data early but instead keep us in thr dark and hope that as many people as possible will buy and upgrade to pro.

I wouldn't go as far as to say the base PS5 is poor value now.

Not everyone wants or needs the latest and greatest hardware. I find the base PS5 more than enough for my gaming needs and I feel there still aren't enough games pushing the hardware.

Prices are also too high right now. Fortunately, I buy games years after release so I get to play my desired games for cheap.

At Argos, currys and other retailers, the PS5 Pro is currently discounted to £639 down from £699. In April it will cost £789, yet it hasn't sold out! Clearly there either no fomo or people can't justify the cost.

I also think that GTA6 will maximum run at 40fps on it. Why not 60fps? Because Sony will reserve that for the PS6. If the PS5 Pro does GTA6 at 60fps even at potato graphics, then there will be little incentive to pay $1000-1200 or whatever it may be for the PS6.

IMO the PS5 Pro has the performance that base console and Series X should have from day one. There marketing was hugely misleading. 4k/120. Usually with consoles the graphics peak as it get closer to the end of its life span. It’s been the opposite for base PS5 and Series X.

Crimson Desert and AC Mirage looks soft. Large open world games don’t run at 4k on the consoles and if users are lucky to have a 60fps mode, it’s with potato graphics at 1080p. Only highly linear single player titles with minimal physics run at 4k.

You can’t miss what you’ve never head but I didn’t know just how low “next gen” current consoles are until I bought a PC to play on my TV and could instantly tell a world a of difference when even menus and loading screens for some games look super crisp and detailed. It was like I have bought a new TV.

Therefore it’s a bit tragic that Seriex X and base PS5 dno’t fullfill their original promise but yet are getting a price hike.

Sony removed the 8K text on the box. However 4k/120 should have a HUGE asterisk.

I am honestly very disappointed in consoles. I was in the mood to play Final Fantasy X HD Remaster the other day. Even on a PS5 pro, that game is still locked to 1080p. Sure you can tell me it's an old game. But I can fire up that same game on my Windows laptop that has worse general performance than a PS5 pro and can play it in 4k. Same "old" game but can play it at 4k on my PC.

I could only play Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth for about 2 hours on the base PS5 when the game released. The two options were horrible graphics to get 60fps, or good graphics but 30fps. I could not play that game for long. I closed it down and waited for the PC release. It was one of my favorite games in the last few years on PC so I could play it at 120fps with good quality.

Many games are reported to not even run at native 1080p 60fps on consoles. This should have been the bare MINIMUM standard when these consoles first came out.

It is a frustrating time to be a gamer right now. I do like running games on high quality and frame rates, but I also need stable frame pacing. Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth looked HORRIBLE on the console, but it had stable frame pacing. This was the opposite on my PC. I had the top of the line gaming PC and it stutters like crazy.

Consoles have the fluidity, but lack quality and frame rates
PCs have frame rates and quality, but lack fluidity.

There is NOTHING to prevent stutter struggle on PC. In 20 years from now, more than likely Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth on PC will STILL stutter like crazy due to the engine and shader compilations.

Yeah, I think UE5 (nanite + lumen) and RT are features that while they talked about when the consoles first came out, they didn't realize how demanding they would be. What is wild is there are games that probably could be ran at 8k (pretty much every 2d game) but I suspect that 8k was more of a marketing ploy for their TV's (which no one bought). The performance of the PS5 Pro couldn't be done at the time, as evidenced by the gap between the Series X and itself with only 8CU's difference (and ~400Mhz) between them.

Yeah, as hard as the PS3/XB360 was to program for I feel like we really got customized games for the consoles during that generation. Now all the games feel/look the same and it makes it hard to see the point in upgrading to newer hardware. I assume the PS6 is going to have the same problem.

If the PS5 and Series X were powered by Nvidia, their performance would have been different today. DLSS 4.5 has breathed new life into RTX 2080 and 3060. They are now capable of visuals and frame rates that wouldn’t be remotely possible rasterised. PS5 PRO has PSSR which have given the original CPU a huge uplift.

I was planning to buy a PS5 Pro but will hold off until GTA6 comes out. That way I can make an informed decision on whether to buy a brand new new Pro or save a board load of money by picking up a used base console.

Yeah I think AMD gave a (very) good bargain for their tech, vs what Nvidia was willing/able to provide. Plus at that point Nvidia was making all the money on crypto (and now AI). Nintendo was/is willing to use old off the shelf parts, but I would be curious to see if DLSS 4.5 Lite could be a thing on the Switch 2. I also am not sure if console could ever go back to separate CPU/GPU chips.

I have a base PS5, and will probably wait for GTA6 on PC where I have vastly more powerful hardware.

Actually broke the seal and got it out of the box and found a space by the TV for the system. My sister did grab the drive for me, haven't gotten it attached yet and I'm actually wondering if I should just go digital (I do have 2 physical games for it already and I suppose the drive doubles as a blu ray player since those are being phased out). But since games are installed anyway, most require Internet connection, many need updates and patches I'm not sure.

Hopefully I can get the system set up in another day or so when I'm feeling better and work is not as hectic.

My sister also picked up a vertical stand. Wondering if it's better to use the stand or lay the system flat.

Also realizing I picked a horrible time to start becoming interested in computing and gaming and most consumerist stuff 😵

PS5 launched at an unfortunate “in between” era where we were transitioning from rasterised to AI enhanced performance. Sadly for MS and Sony, AMD hasn’t been able to keep up with Nvidia and future proof devices that launched several years ago.

Nintendo lucked out with Nvidia agreeing to work with them given the opportunity cost. DLSS makes the Switch 2 what it is. Likewise my 4070ti Super is a completely inferior device with without DLSS. Even just with DLSS and without frame generation my PC can run games at 90-120fps high settings and way tracing. Rasterised I would be looking at 20-30fps.

PSSR could be worth buying the PS5 Pro for. The tech will continue to the extent that the PS5 Pro will remain a viable consoles 2-3 years into the life span of PS6. This makes the PS5 Pro, probably the first console to continuously receive software updates that improve quality. Some of the algorithms currently in development between AMD and Sony will likely work on PS5 Pro which I think is basically a public dev kit for PS6.

Then consoles aren't for you. It's that simple. The target market for this stuff is people who want to get into games on big screens as painlessly as possible. If you want the best visuals, go run it on a gaming PC. If you want it to just work without hassle, use a console. You're talking about tech that is half a decade old and acting surprised that it can't handle this stuff.

That's......literally the point of my post? And the way console prices are going it won't provide any benefit to getting them over a PC in the future. It's also interesting you did not include my full post, or did not read. I also find PC overly frustrating with the micro-stutters and shader compilations and how nearly every UE game runs horribly on the 9800X3D and 5090 setup. And no computer will EVER make this better, not even in 20 years due to the engine and architecture level. SO you could say PCs are not for me either then.

I just want to play games at the best quality at the best fluidity. NOTHING gives me what I want.

So you are telling me a console cannot handle Final Fantasy X HD Remaster but a worse performing Windows laptop can? Okay. Not sure you thought your last sentence out too well.

Point it, the PS5 has more than enough power to do it. But it is locked down when it should not be.

First, I read your post. All of it. I only quoted the part that I found most egregious. I said what I said, and I meant it.

Consoles by their very nature are locked down. This not new. It is literally what they do. All of them. Sony is literally the company that had a class action lawsuit against them (of which I was part) because they retroactively removed the ability for the PS3 to run linux. They are walled gardens locked in underground fallout bunkers, and again, always have been. It has nothing to do with the power of the console. Your expectations are wholly unreasonable.
