But I understand that this will not work for everyone, especially with varying quality of internet connections.
Might be true for older ps4 games. However many recent titles including on xbox, have discs ther don't contain the full game.

Basically the disc is just a licence that allows your console to download the full game.

I might still buy a used optical drive for my ps5 pro to play ps4 titles that are not available on PC or that I might only okay once.

So... Ram prices skyrocketing flash memory (and even HDD) prices skyrocketing how to combat that? Oh how's about getting rid of a medium that cost pennies and force people to purchase more expensive storage up front. Sounds like a nice plan. 🤬

Probably going to drive more people to PC instead of the locked ecosystem that's getting less and less appealing.

Got about 17 months before Sony drops the hammer on disc but it's already starting in a big way.

Was not totally all in on GTA VI but was one of those games where if I was shopping and happened to have the hundo on hand and seen an actual copy at the store, I'd probably grab it. But not for a piece of paper...

Really not sure if I'm going to invest much more into my PS5. Been at odds with it since I got it. Really can't get into it all all. I don't know why. Maybe because I find controls and player camera very clunky and need a lot of attention which breaks immersion.

No more physical edition.. I'm not into physical games but this news and the other one of 551 movies just removed from customers accounts..

I just cant trust sony

Definitely a bummer but not surprised at all. I keep all of my physical games but I've found myself tempted by the convenience of a digital download more and more. I was planning on buying a drive for my Pro but never got around to it.

Earlier this week Sony announced that it will be taking some "purchased" movies away from people who paid for them. There's no reason to believe that they won't do the same with games. Once this change occurs, you won't be able to buy games, only lease them for an indeterminate period of time. I certainly won't be buying a PS6 when it comes out.

I see that they're shutting down the PS3 online store next year too. If you're a "game shuffler" where you find yourself deleting game X to free up enough space to redownload game Y, then you're going to be stuck with the game collection that you had at the time of the shutdown.

What a mess.

Yeah PS3/Vita people should get larger storage units and download everything they bought. Though I don' even know if magicgate sticks (vita) are still being sold these days.

That wasn't the first time they did that. Basically the gaming and entertainment industry has largely forced us to accept that we don't own our games or movies.

Amazon has made similar moves with their kindle, in that they've deleted books from people's kindles

This is why I started buying bluray movies again last eeek. Used ones form charity shops for $1-3. Cheaper than on iTunes or streaming and with far superior sound quality.

When you buy a digital movie. The publisher can throttle bitrate up and down as they wish in order to cost optimise. As a result, a movie that you buy today could sound or look worse in 1 year without you having been informed.

Wonder how the EU is going to react. Sony stopping with physical media, means they'll have a digital monopoly since you can only buy games on their store. That's not going to fly here. Apple also had to allow other app stores here like the Epic Game Store we have here.

If you use CFW (custom firmware) on the Vita, you can use microSD Card adapters that cost around 5 bucks. Although SD cards themselves are more expensive (we all know why)

I have mixed feelings on the death of the discs, in part because it was already such a hobbled setup anyway for long-term play. The add-on drive for the Slim models (and even the included one on disc models) requires an internet connection to key it to your console, so if they ever shut the validation server down and your console crashes or gets reset, it's over and you can't do it. I don't know 100% but I believe all models require an initial internet update/validation to even work as well.

On top of that of course many of the games on disc were not complete or playable just via the disc, or are in a weakened state compared to fully patched up/updated copies. It's not the same as if this were PS2 era where everything is just good to go no matter what the case may be. Some of these things might not be problems for another 20 years, but eventually they will be. Softened the impact for me, anyway.

Nonetheless it is a sad step in that the used game/game trading market will cease to exist, driving up prices especially in Asia and parts of the Americas that rely on physical to a much greater extent than US/CA does. Gaming in general seems to be getting increasingly unaffordable.

I will be much more upset if Blu-Ray dies because there is a clear advantage there; streaming movies is not exactly the same quality or consistency as a disc, and I doubt it will be any time soon. It will take much stronger internet connections to 1:1 constantly match the bitrate and audio quality of a large disc. 4K UHD is a good format and hopefully still has some life left in it.

I have a 500 mbps internet connection (because I'm to cheap to pay for more since the extra bandwidth is rarely needed) but I wonder that Sony realises that not the whole world has stable and fast internet. I've seen figures of 300 to 600 GB for GTA 6. There are countries where the average internet connection is 25 mbps. For 600 GB that's a 53 hr download. For me it would take 2 hrs and 40 minutes, which also feels like aaaaaaaaaaaaaaages.

And yes, pre-orders can pre-load, but not every purchase is a pre-order.

The 2nd order effect of disc support ending is thet don't will likely keep prices or games hugh and not discount them over time.

There will no longer be competition from second hand sales.

Enjoying paying $40-60 for a 7 year old game whilst it cost $4.99 in the Steam sale on PC. 🤑

All of this just drives me more to "I'll just play emulated games".

I'm not participating in their revenue merry go round.

And it seems that Sony is pushing through, even with all the online backlash. The only factory in the world were they still made games, in Austria (for those in doubt: country in Europe, not the same as Australia ;-) ), people already got briefed that the manufacturing lines for games will be closing and that they'll be educated to work on other assembly lines.

Playstation and Xbox are under cost pressures.

If removing support for disc reduces cost of R&D, manufacturing, after sales service and packaging by $30-50 then over tens of millions of consoles that adds up. Disc drives are moving parts which introduces risk.

Sony pays for dts and dolby sound licences per console with a disc drive. Xbox require the user to pay for it in the Xbox app store.

Plus they can just decide to make movies not available. 28 Days Later wasn't on streaming services for the longest time.

You know what.. I really wasn't as outraged as others.. because I look at my PS5 disk collection and I have 5, FIVE games and that is it. All the rest are digital either bought or from the PSN sub. So I guess I'm not overly bothered by it, some were claiming but PSN will be the only place to buy games, no that is wrong because in it's statement Sony said you will be able t buy games from stores still, it'll just be codes in a box, but the competition of the pricing will still exist.
It will be a same too lose the second hand market though. For me the trouble is I fire up the PS5 and it is such a powerful slick capable system, PS6 will just be even more so and even at say a grand, it is cheaper then the now 1400 PC handhelds one the market, and the PS6 will easily out perform those, an equivalent PC? I bet it will be more than a grand too. I am still testing if my RSI comes with using my PS5. And if not may just stick with PS. Just sold my PC handheld as that was causing me some pain so I have no portable games machine now. I need to think of my hands and being able to play games in the first place rather then having a handheld. I like the new MSI Claw 8 EX Ai Plus but in the UK that's 1400, so again at a grand PS6 would still offer netter value.

The RAM cartel and Ai have REALLY totally screwed up the market, and many think it will remain so for the next 3 years or so. I await to see what the court case against the cartels leads to?

Anyway I am really excited to play the new Star Wars pod racing game coming out, tempted to pre-order it.. Also been playing The Adventures Of Elliot demo and that's awesome! But it feels soooo much like a Switch game. But it really is cool, Darwins Paradox demo was really good too so another one I want. For me I have no interest in GTA 6, maybe on a sale in the far future lol.. yeah maybe I need to get into it?

It is a contractor, Sony doesn't own them, and they were told ages ago, as in a cookie of years or more I think, they would be stopping disk production, because they are investing over 30 million into are machinery to make some sort of optical thins used by servers, something like that, and all the staff will be kept on and retrained.
