Maybe it's just me, but I find it strange that "Band Only" orders have earlier dates, and have already started shipping. It just seems odd that Apple would ship bands, instead of putting those bands on watches to fulfill orders... It's really backwards.
Actually, I think there's probably a logical reason for this order. And it all has to do with the fact that there's a lot of steps the standalone bands get to skip.
Here's how I'm guessing things went down:
1. Apple planned to have production split into three groups:
- Band Production: various facilities making the different bands
- Watch Facility 1: Assembles MB, LL, Metal Link watches, among maybe others?
- Watch Facility 2: Assembles the rest
2. The Band Production facilities ship some bands to the Watch Facilities and then packages some for retail.
3. Oops! They find out a couple weeks before pre-orders that Watch Facility 1 is producing faulty taptic engines. Therefore, they back off the delivery of these watches at preorder to give the facility enough time to get back up and running.
4. At launch, they prioritize watch shipments to get the watches out there, rather than using up shipping bandwidth for the extra bands.
5. Then as the first wave of watches finishes, they start shipping some standalone bands, that are already ready to go, as wave 2 of watches are finished being prepped.
6. Hopefully, Watch Facility 2 is up and running by now and we'll have our watches here shortly.
Anyways, this is just my speculation. It's my brains way of trying to make sense of all this mess.
