Apple today unveiled the Pro Display XDR, a 32-inch 6K monitor with a P3 wide color gamut and true 10-bit color support, 1,600 nits of peak brightness, a 1,000,000:1 contrast ratio, and a super-wide, off-axis viewing angle.

    Apple's press release:
The display will be available in the fall, starting at $4,999, but that price doesn't include the stand. If you want the display to come on Apple's stand, as it is shown in official product images, that'll cost an extra $999. Unsurprisingly, the reaction to this news has been quite strong across social media.

The display will accompany Apple's all-new modular Mac Pro, which will also be available in the fall starting at $5,999.

I loved how the audience collectively gasped when it was revealed not only that the stand was sold separately — but that it cost $999.

Well, for the cheap price of the display that abides to the netflix specs for mastering, compared to other reference monitors, they somehow need to milk the customers to cover the enormous R&D required.

I literally LOLed when they announced this, and so did the audience, so much so the presenter wasn't able to continue. This is something that Apple wouldn't normally announce in a Keynote.

Got to say the first time in memory that the folks in attendance were speechless out of shock; the audacity to charge an additional grand for a stand to prop up the thing! Innovation my ass to find more revenue $

It do take a lot of NERVE.

I am gooped. I am gagged. And apparently too poor to afford it.

So that's where the Apple Tax went to. Everything else about the MP was pretty humble (for Apple).

I thought I was the only one that noticed that. The presenter just kept talking over the crowd and rushed threw that part of the presentation.

I think they knew what folks reaction would be.

Kind of cheap, since I'd predicted $1299 during the keynote. :)

    $30 for material
    $40 for machining
    $15 for assembly
    +30-50% for profitability

And the rest? Paying Johnny Ive to make a video about how "incredible" the stand is...

I’m sure you can skip the stand and prop it up on a few cheap Apple Pippins.

$42,000 for the 6 display setup (just for the displays and stands). That's seriously PRO.

This is a great display. 1600 cd/m2 is fantastic. That contrast ratio is baloney. The real ratio must be somewhere around 3000-4000:1. But the price is steep. Minimum 11 grand with the Mac Pro. But people can’t complain that Apple doesn’t care about pros now.

Edit: Sorry that’s a 12 grand minimum. I forgot about the $1000 stand.

You think it would have a simple stand in the box. Then offer a pro stand with better cable management, tilt rotate features, perhaps some additional ports. They could have shown that the pro stand was well worth the price compared to the included stand.

This was the only rediculous thing from Apple today. Is be surprised if they keep the high price but Apple might and might have a few people buy it.

Hey Apple, if you wanted $6k for the monitor then you should've just priced it at $6k rather than charging $5k and insulting our intelligence by charging an additional $1k for the stand nearly everyone will need anyway.

My question is, why is Apple doing this? You'd think they know this would result in bad press for basically no good reason. They're not going to sell many of these displays, so they're likely not going to make much profit selling these stands.

What's their angle here? Are they really this tone deaf?
