The Stand for Apple's New $4,999 Pro Display Costs an Extra $999

My question is, why is Apple doing this? You'd think they know this would result in bad press for basically no good reason. They're not going to sell many of these displays, so they're likely not going to make much profit selling these stands.

What's their angle here? Are they really this tone deaf?
Bait-and-switch marketing tactics where they announce a $99 price point later down the line instead, and make potentially more sales because customers are less upset?

Well, I can at least hope it was just a prank

think of that metal stand with the support sticking up as a symbolic sculpture of a hand giving you the middle finger from apple to all the people who bitched about the 2013 mac pro. They have to get their laughs in since almost no one would buy that ****

CAN’T WAIT TO BUY THE STAND AND THEN ONE DAY THE MONITOR. O N E D A Y!!!!

I think Apple thought they were being clever with the stand. They didn’t want to sell a $6200 monitor so make the stand and VESA separate. For those that buy the stand and VESA(most Apple faithful will), Apple gets its full $6200. Those that wait for a third party stand with VESA option for $80 will be quite happy I think.

Still, it was priceless seeing him cutoff in the keynote with laughter at the stands price.

Whoever made the decision to announce a separate and optional $999 stand should be fired... Seriously... how hard would it have been to just announce a monitor price of 5999 including the stand and call it a day... NO ONE WOULD BE BALKING.... stupidity on display there at Apple...

This will go viral as fodder for every iSheep comment and criticism for years to come. They’re literally writing their own memes for the competition and presenting them at their own keynote.

At first sight I thought it must’ve been fake. It has Onion written all over it.

It comes with a basic stand -- so say all the other websites covering the hands-on session in person.
Chill out. $999 is for the fancy one.

The people who were in the market for the $40000 Sony reference monitor they showed during the keynote are unlikely to be crying about the $999 stand. If it's not a good investment for whatever you do, don't buy it. Simple. If all I need for gardening is a $20 shovel, I won't be complaining that an industrial digger is $200k.

Marketing strategy. They want to be the company that sells a 999-dollar stand. Luxury.

I don’t get the negative comments. If you don’t need that level of fit, finish, and functionality — don’t buy it. And how does Apple know if a user would want a stand or wall mount? Are they supposed to include both, and just charge more for the whole package? Logistically it makes sense to sell these pieces separately. Outrage over something that maybe you can’t afford or refuse to purchase just reveals your own covetousness and insecurity. There are more and less expensive monitors out there. Just pick one, do your work, and shut up about it.

The customers buying these will be buying from their B2B sales team and buying dozens, if not hundreds at a time. Separating the parts out like that will allow them to order what the customer needs and negotiate more flexibly.

Apple also operates a leasing program for business customers. Here again, separating things out allows for a more cost-accurate contract.

Some production companies and studios will want stands, many will have custom install options for the VESA mounts. Most will likely desire a mix of both.

This is not a consumer/prosumer product. Very few will be sold one a time. It’s not a product for someone who just wants to own the “best” of everything. It’s for businesses that buy/lease based on the potential return on their investment. More power/capability means faster production time, means more cash flow. They aren’t going to be used or sold like iMacs, so it’s naive to view the pricing or packaging that way.

There's a limit to how much you can increase the price of an item before it moves from "luxury item" to "ridiculous cash grab" and the stand is WELL into "ridiculous cash grab" at $999.

It's just unnecessary, and Apple would have saved a lot of criticism just including the stand with the screen or charging $100 for it. (that would be the "luxury item" price for a monitor stand.)
