These shows are pathetic. Gruber always praises Apple and never asks the though questions people want answers to. Even slightly though questions are never asked. Elephants in rooms are ignored, etc. This is just a big ad for gruber and a small one for Apple.

More like the ass kissing show. Gruber will ask the most simplistic softball questions and then answer them mostly on his own with a bunch of awkward pauses.

At his point, Craig and Joz probably just do it as an inside joke of some sort.
I'm happy to read other people are thinking this too. His shows are applebutlicking events.

He even refers to Apple products mike they're people, just like Apple does. "When I pick up iPad,..." and not "when I pick up MY or THE or AN iPad"
Basically Apple products are living people for Gruber.

Softball questions, incoherent ramblings, constant forced jokes, awkward pauses, non-questions, non-answers.

This guy’s a joke. He’s not a journalist, he’s not any more “expert” than anyone who follows tech: he’s an elitist prick with a vested interest in constant spinning for Apple to help raise the share price (which he never divulges how many stocks of it he owns) and get preferential treatment.

How he’s still around is beyond me. There are far, FAR better analysts / journalists out there who actually contribute to the tech dialogue and fair criticism.
I can understand why some people who casually follow him feel that way, but he’s actually been very critical of some of Apple’s software UI choices in recent years (as just one example), where he mentions marketing choices of what looks cool is triumphing over what works well. He‘s undoubtedly an Apple fan, but both his defense and criticism of Apple are thought provoking at times and a worthwhile addition to the conversation in my opinion.

If the only exposure is to his softball-question WWDC videos, you aren’t getting the whole picture. If he brought up some of his biting criticisms of Apple, I doubt the executive team would show up for the next one, so it’s a balancing act.

I'm prepared to cut John some slack here as I know him best from his years of blog posts and podcast efforts. In that context he is in his element and is predominantly insightful, direct and considered. But these shows are an environment way outside his usual comfort zone. There is a big difference between having the time alone to craft a honed post, prerecord a one-on-one "private" conversation and stepping on to a stage in front of a live audience, lights, amplification and oh yeah, one or more high-level Apple executives. From what I have seen so far, the risk of taking that huge step has been a bit perilous to say the least. So, I feel for him as I know he has it in him to deliver the goods when he's relaxed but thus far, he clearly hasn't found his footing in that environment.

Ironically, I've noticed he's been a bit too much the other way in his podcasts lately where he can talk over his guests. What he is saying is usually on point and worth listening to, but I feel his guests can sometimes find it hard to get a word in beyond the odd word or sound of agreement.

To his credit he keeps stepping up, but I sure hope he does better in this one as I'd hate for it to end prematurely due to underestimating the task, going for it too early and being unprepared.

What went wrong that highly paid executives cannot handle critical questions anymore?
It's less about them not being able to handle it, and more about not wanting an entire show where each answer is "no comment."

By asking the right questions, even the notoriously tight lipped Apple executives can reveal interesting information. Hit them with a hammer and they will just clam up. And Gruber is right to think that that wouldn't be entertaining for anyone.

Update: While the video was briefly available, it has now been set to private due to a minor issue. The Talk Show Live host John Gruber said the video should return in a matter of hours, so bookmark this page and check back later!

The Talk Show Live From WWDC 2024 is now available to watch on YouTube. Daring Fireball's John Gruber discussed Apple Intelligence and other WWDC announcements with Apple's software engineering chief Craig Federighi, marketing chief Greg Joswiak, and AI/machine learning head John Giannandrea in front of a live audience.

We will embed the video here when it becomes available again.

The on-stage interview took place on Tuesday evening at the California Theatre in San Jose, California, and it ran for nearly two hours.

Haha, Apple didn’t like something that was said and wants more editing to be done. ‘Journalism’ in the 2020’s

What’s going on with this guy? Was excited to watch this but some of his choices are…questionable.
I know a person who likes to use that word but never to describe the mentally handicapped.

Once a sibling took issue and made a big deal about it justifying this latest outrage by claiming their neighbor had a handicapped child who had been called that.

Person explained they never use that to describe handicapped or even non handicapped people but mostly only inanimate things.

This person asked, what would be a better word? Sibling replied, “moron, cretin, imbecile, idiot, would be better than retard!”

Person asked sibling if they were aware that those terms are associated with different states of mental retardation. Sibling was not pleased.

Context matters. Calling a person this is bad, but an inanimate item? That’s less clear cut.

Wow, very very wrong. Gruber, among people in his field, is the least afraid to speak truth to power. When you write like this I think you haven't followed him at all.
Oh please. Of all the Apple centric podcasts I listen to John Gruber is the least likely to be critical of Apple. A perfect example is the new iPad Pro and iPad OS. Of course in that case it’s easy for him to defend Apple because he’s a Mac user.

Hopefully he asks them about the photo bug a few weeks ago that was making deleted photos reappear. Kind of a big deal when you preach privacy.

For anyone complaining that John didn’t push Apple with more challenging questions is forgetting that his show is happening at an Apple sponsored event filled with Apple fans and people making money off of what Apple has created - as is John. He’s not there to poke holes in everything Apple is doing wrong, nor should he if he wants to continue getting opportunities to spend hours with Apple executives.

If anyone wants hard hitting questions and challenges to why Apple makes the decisions they do - start your own investigative reporting company and have at it.

His show and "interviews" are not useful or entertaining as they are

It's just running Apple PR

The show was broadcast live on Apple Vision Pro so I would think if someone said something they should not have about an Apple hardware or software product we would have heard about it (since if anyone is going to watch this on an AVP, it would be someone in tech media).

Yeah, Joanna Stern tried and it was cringe to watch. So i guess if you already know they won’t answer anything, there’s no point.

Plus it’s Apples event technically, so i don’t think they want to be roasted at their own developers conference haha
