No one is saying the obvious: he’s very bad at interviewing. Above and beyond being a shill, he’s just very bad at interviewing.

Threads. Yes. Sad to see ‘thumbs down’ on my reply — guess all those users think that’s acceptable.Wow. What social network did he say this on? Is it still up?
So if it’s a mistake, it’s perfectly fine for anyone, including the dozen of replies he got about it, to call him out. There’s nothing brave about it — it’s called accountability.Certainly a mistake to have used that word. But aren’t we lucky to have brave souls here who will happily repost other people’s missteps, so that all of eternity can cast stones.
People watch this propaganda? What kind of softball questions are these?
lol. Yeah it was either last year or the year before. At the end he always thanks the people behind the scenes. Then usually always gets emotional talking about his wife and son. But I think it was last year he gets to talking about his family. There is a long silence of him trying to compose himself. Then Joz jumps in to make it less uncomfortable IMO and says “I think that says it all”. Gruber could have just let it end there but it was followed by more silence and he eventually gets the words out. Is it cool he loves his family? Yes of course. But dude get ahold of yourself. He cried one year?

What’s going on with this guy? Was excited to watch this but some of his choices are…questionable.
I'd say 'shiny blank wall in the Apple echo chamber' but that's what the job is. I don't really watch this stuff for hard-hitting anything because we've known for years that goes nowhere. Really the only reason to watch or listen to the ATP guys or whatever else you do when you're not surfing this site is what these things were originally made for: to let Apple fans revel in the fact that they're Apple fans. It's a community. Folks like Gruber are a sort of town-hall, and we pay his salary as a kind of rent. It's another version of this forum without the debate part. If you're looking for more than a place to revel in Apple geekdom or debate irrelevant Apple minutia, you're in the wrong place. There's nothing inherently wrong with any of it; but I think people expect too much of it.I stopped reading daringfireball years ago when it became obvious to me Gruber is just PR for Apple, wrapped in a “critical analysis” shtick. I hated when he started posting politics. I didn’t go to his site to read about how much he hates ****-Midas. What exactly is Gruber’s job?

I never really thought too much about it. It's his blog, he can write what he wants, and I'll choose to read what I want. I mean FWIW, few of these guys who do podcasts are particularly good at podcasting or interviewing. Podcasting kinda came along as an afterthought or add-in and then boomed into the thing. I don't think that's what they went to school for. A good example is Merlin, who is horrendous at it, and yet that's what he does for a living because people keep listening. It's like anything else. If you don't like it, don't read or listen, and if enough people do that, then there's no cash and that's the end of it. But this is straight up supply and demand, like most things. If enough people are interested in it, it really doesn't matter how bad, nonsensical, or poorly executed it is.Also become insufferable and prone to tedious political rantings in recent years.
i can't stand greg joswiak and john gruber. what an unpleasant advertisment show every year!

If you start to watch these through the prism of "It's entertainment," they become a little more tolerable. Like, Craig's reaction to "Why 18 years to get custom home screens?" was amusing. I don't expect much but the occasional chuckle. As someone said above: Interviewing is not among Gruber's talents. You'd think after so many years he might partake of Toastmasters or some such, but I guess he just doesn't care enough.
I think this says it really well. Lots of people make "objective" judgements about his work, but he remains popular. Maybe listen/watch someone else?I never really thought too much about it. For real. Professionally, he has zero complaints about his gig, so why rock the boat? I mean, I find it somewhat ironic that someone who cares about the leading of a font on his website and worships a company that purports to sweat every conceivable detail seems not to care that he stammers and giggles his way through his big annual showcase, but hey -- he's a millionaire and I'm not.I agree. But - from Gruber's perspective, when you're interviewing some of the top brass at one of the world's top 5 companies, why would you change anything?
