So it wasn't best for Apple's best interest to release two brand new…
  • iPads at the same time?
  • Macbook Airs?
  • Macbooks?
  • iMacs?
…or does this logic only apply to iPhones?

And why not?
  • Customer wants to buy a 4.7" iPhone. Apple has one and collects the money.
  • Customer wants to buy a 5.5" iPhone. Apple has one and collects the money.
Alternatively, the second customer wants something bigger than 4.7". Apple doesn't have one (because, apparently, it's not in their best interest). So customer goes elsewhere and gives that revenue to Samsung or one of the other players. How does "best interest" reconcile with needlessly giving business away to key competitors?

This is logic

The iPad mini says hello.

Again. People fail to under the iPad mini.

iPad mini was released along size with iPad 4 in Oct/November 2012. iPad 4 was a minor refresh. iPad mini new product.

If apple were to do the same thing.

The would release an iPhone 5S S (2014) model with same 4 inch display but faster processor along with a new iPhone (different display size).

Apple did not release a redesigned iPad (body style like iPad Air) with the iPad mini (non retina).

And for 2013. They just updated the iPad mini retina (retina screen/same size) with new redesign iPad Air.

I think the point here is, that, every time someone thinks Apple wouldn't do something, they did. Verizon wouldn't get the iPhone....they did. Apple wouldn't release a phone larger than 3.5'......they did. Apple wouldn't release a smaller size iPad.....They did. Then Apple did something else that many people didn't expect, they released 2 iPhone models in the same year. They released both the iPad 3 and iPad 4 in the same year.

Agreed. I get so tired of the "Apple wouldn't do that" or the "Steve Jobs would never do that" mantras. Companies adapt or die, and Steve is still no longer with us.

i'm less concerned whether the 5.5 exists as i am whether it would get better internals. I'd be perfectly happy staying with my 4S if the hardware wasn't slowly falling out of step, performance wise. If they reserved substantially better hardware for the 5.5, it'd suck because i'd be stuck between a phone size i don't want, and a phone that would be obsoleted sooner.

All of the products you mentioned had actual leaked parts.

You forget even Samsung isn't stupid not to cannibalize sales of their own Galaxy phones. They don't release Galaxy Note and Galaxy S series at the same time either.

What? That is not cannibalizing. It's not like people will buy a Galaxy S in the spring and then a Note in the fall. And if they do, well, that's just a bonus.

Just like Apple releasing a 4.7" and a 5.5" phone at the same time will not cannibalize anything.

Production of the 5.5" iPhone hasn't started yet.

Besides, who really cares? It makes me laugh that people get all bent out of shape over this rumor.

Personally, I hope Apple DOES release a 5.5" iPhone. AND that they give the 5S a little refresh. I want to see:

iPhone Mini
iPhone Air
iPhone Pro

And do away with the idiotic numbering in the name.

I think this is the most likely reason as to why we haven't seem component leaks yet. I'm also inclined to agree that the 5.5 is coming just given the sheer weight of all the rumors. From a business perspective, it just seems asinine for Apple to continue ignoring such a popular segment.

What is professional about a bigger screen? I'd be cool with losing the numbers, but "iPhone Pro" is pretty nonsensical.

Chinese rumor blog Apple Daily has acquired photos of what it claims are the next-generation iPhone, including the 5.5-inch model we’ve seen much less of in recent weeks. The two photos above show the larger device (with the purple interior) paired with a 4.7-inch version.

The larger model, which Apple Daily claims will be called ‘iPhone 6L’ also sports a larger 2915mAh battery (seen below), compared to the 1810mAh in the 4.7-inch device and 1560 mAh in the iPhone 5s.

Part of the “iPhone 6L” display panel, which features a similar design to the 4.7-inch variant with more rounded corners, is shown off in one of the photos. Other internal components, including the logic board for both handsets, are on display in the photos below:

Seems pretty convincing to me. I'd say we have part leaks.

Battery part leaks! We can all close this thread. It was open because there were no part leaks for the 5.5" yet. :)

Just heard from my friend who has a friend that is friends with an apple tech in Cupertino and heard the 5.5" model will have expandable memory. You heard it from me first.

My best friend's sister's boyfriend's brother's girlfriend heard from this guy who knows this kid who's going with the girl who saw Tim Cook with a 5.5" iPhone 6 that glows in the dark. I guess it's pretty serious.
