I wanted to give it a fair chance. I really did.

The production values were high, the basic structure of the show and the "challenges" were alright, but the show had a more artificial feel than TGUK (which is saying something). Less was explained about the trucks or what they were doing with them, more time was focused on what seemed like a somewhat forced rapport between the presenters.

But for me the nail in the coffin had to do with the premise of the episode. The point of the Alaska challenge was to determine "America's toughest truck". They spent much of the program bashing the Toyota that was brought along as the punishment for failure. They worried that if their truckes failed, they'd be forced to admit that an "import" was better. They failed to mention that the Toyota Tacoma is made in Mexico and Canada these days - just like the big "American" trucks!!! It was pure patriotic sillyness, since I live in Alaska and can tell you that their are tens of thousands of outdoorsy types that swear by the Hilux/Tacoma - a vehicle that TGUK has also been at great pains to explain is the toughest in the world. I have owned two myself, and I can vouch for the fact that they are very sturdy beasts.

Sorry if I'm months behind on this rant, but I had to let it out. I liked Tanner Foust though, he seemed alright. I've watched TG Russia and it's not much to write homa about either. Haven't seen TG Australia. If TGUS gets a few seasons under its belt it may mature into something worth watching, but that's a big "if".

My thoughts on TGUS were that it would've been a good show had I never seen TGUK. But in my mind, I kept comparing it to TGUK and of course, it was not as good. I'd find fault with it, or find them doing things that TGUK already did. I'll still watch TGUS because I have nothing better to do on Sunday nights, but I'll always prefer TGUK.

I ********** love Top Gear UK with a burning passion!!!
I torrent new episodes every ********** week!!!!
I am really happy for some reason I found this forum post!!!

TGUS feels too much like a repackaged product to me. Perhaps, as you say, I'd like it more if I wasn't comapring it to TGUK.

Even when they do talk about cars on TopGear, it's just about the endless iterations of the Gallardo or 911. It gets boring after a while, which is a shame because the news segment is my favourite part of the show.

Is Top Gear US any good then?

I suggest you give it a try and decide for yourself, but as a comparison to the UK version, I would say no. But I have only seen one episode, so perhaps once they get a few seasons under their belt they will improve. My early impressions were negative, but I haven't quite written them off yet.

...and that's it for another season. The Prescott segment was hilarious, the Moon Buggy; enlightening. The rest...meh...50/50. Just told us stuff we already knew.

Like many other have already mentioned, I think TG has passed its prime in the current format. A combine harvester as a snowplow... seriously?

The last episode was a little bit better, but even the "epic race" was a bit of a disappointment. I can't quite determine whether we're just spoiled by some of the great segments in the past or whether the quality of the presenting is actually diminishing... either way the format needs a breath of fresh air.
Only having 6 episodes in a series also just adds insult to injury...

I've been a TG fan and avid watcher since the dark ages when Clarkson, Tiff and Quentin Wilson we're still presenting the 30 min format. It was a great show about cars. It then died a painful death when Clarkson left and was replaced by an odd bloke called James May. He really didn't fill the shoes. The new format was great as it became an entertainment show focussed on those crazy cars most of us will never own... and combining them with great adventures.
Maybe its time for the next evolution of the show??? Back to its roots maybe??

Edit: Just remembered... didn't the season preview have some enormous Truck/SUV thing driving through a wall? Did I miss something??
Edit2: Yes it did! Pretty sure I didn't miss an episode... http://www.topgear.com/uk/videos/series-16-montage?VideoBrowserMode=this-week

No, I don't remember that either. There is a Hummer being blown up in that montage that I don't remember either.

I have to say, I quite enjoyed last nights episode. I think the key thing for me was that each section was about cars for a change! Not the best episode ever, but I was glad to watch this one (unlike last week!).

Top Gear often will kick a segment forward a series or two, so I expect the South African Marauder MPV review will happen in Series 17 or 18.

Yup... that for all the piss taking out of flappy paddles, they (Hammond anyway) can't drive manuals for ****. :p :p

Well, I don't recall Hammond going on about them but I don't begrudge Clarkson's opinion on flappy paddles. It's evident to me that he's got some skill behind the wheel.

The best of Top Gear has always been 3 cars, 3 guys, 1 road trip.

I don't blame the presenters/writers for the format having become stale - there's really not much more that they can do without it becoming way over the top, which in a way it has. I mean come on, James May died at the end of the Albania trip. Remember the Isle of Man with the M6, Vantage and the 997? That was awesome. The chemistry and opinions were such that if that were completely scripted, (which I don't think it was) it felt genuine. Somewhere between the fat dead guy squeezing himself into the trunk and the 14th time the Albanian police rounded the corner... Meh. Not interesting and not interested.

Yeah, I wanted to see their take on that. I've done a couple jobs where the org I was with used civilianized South African MPVs. Man, those things are not comfortable, they are a pain to get in and out of and if you're ever in the position of having to long distance transport patients who end getting even more sick and vomiting everywhere or losing bowel control for some reason, you end up either wanting to shoot the driver, the patient and yourself to get away from the misery because ventilation through a couple of slots on top of the vehicle at low speed SUCKS.

I have been watching reruns of the old, "boring" version of Top Gear and from my perspective I wish the show were a mix of 80% "old" TG and 20% "new" TG. Or maybe 70/30. But either way I wish it was more of a show about cars and less of an expensive lark for three men that just happens to involve cars.

Tesla sues Top Gear over 'faked' electric car race

http://bit.ly/hk45kr

They've may have a good case but this probably a bad idea...

I think it's a pretty good idea. It doesn't do Tesla any good to have this episode continually repeated and the lawsuit gives them the opportunity to get their side out there.

With Carter Ruck representing them, and the British libel laws being what they are, I don't think the BBC/Top Gear stands a chance.

Hope Tesla fails massively, if only positive things can be mentioned in reviews then things will get really stupid quickly.

Yes, but the question is more whether TG is really "reviewing" cars any more or just providing entertainment.

TG themselves admitted that they "simulated" the part about the Tesla running out of juice. In essence they faked the whole "test". I'm not surprised that Tesla are angry, but the Tesla roadster is too expensive and too much of a niche vehicle for me to really care. And we all know how much TG hate electrics anyway.

TG has won awards for being the "Most Popular Factual Programme", but every time they are accused of faking/staging something they admit it and then go on to say the show is "entertainment". So far this defense has worked...

That pretty much describes about 80% of the cars that featured on Top Gear these days.

It's not that its a negative review that's the problem but faking running out of power was a pathetic thing to do.

and to quote my own post at the time

JC couldn't stop him self being a cock about the Tesla could he.

Trouble is even if Tesla win the case they'll probably end up as the butt of endless unfunny jokes about being golf buggies or milk floats for years to come.

But it running out of power is one of the major problems with such an electric vechile.

I hate the idea that just because a car has an electric engine it should be instantly thought of as the best thing ever. Petrol cars are have had many years of refinements, elecrtric cars need to go through the same process.

I remember that epsisode, it was positive about renewable energy, the car James May reviewd was deemed excellent, JC thought the Tesla was fast and powerful.

Nobody's saying that power isn't an issue or that electric cars should be given good reviews just because they're electric cars. If you read a review of a iPad which said "The battery ran out after one hour" and then you found out that the battery hadn't run out but the reviewer had said it "to show what could happen if the battery ran out" would you trust that reviewer again? and were not talking about a review on some obscure blog, it's the worlds most popular car show.

As for the hydrogen vehicle that James May tested in the same program it looked great but there are huge problems producing and distributing hydrogen, those cars were a limited leases only test scheme and may never be commercially available.

Robert Llewellyn's blog has got a interesting take on this business it's worth a read http://llewblog.squarespace.com/electric-cars

Running out of petrol is a problem for my petrol car too, I just make sure I fill it up before it happens.

I live 8 miles from my work. Generally I don't drive any more than 50 miles from my house, maybe once per month I do. An electric car would be ideal for my situation, and if you really sat down and looked at it, most other people too.

TG may be an entertainment programs but it's presented by journalists who have a duty to present the facts.

A certain duty to the facts.

While i love Top Gear, i hope Tesla win.

The Trio are stuck in fantasy land and are unable/unwilling to contemplate the future.
