It's not crazy, it's just inconvenient. Why are people so quick to lash out when they don't get what they want, when they want it, NOW NOW NOW?

The iPhone arrives next week. Order one from Apple today and pay full whack, or if you want one on contract wait and see what the networks offer.

CHILL, WINSTON.

AMEN

*But I do think the networks should have been a bit more forthcoming with their details to avoid overload on Apple's site.

the fact that the US store is down as well would suggest is more to do with lack of supply than apple releasing carrier pricing details

Lack of supply has nothing to do with it. Apple don't pull their entire website just because they sold out of one single product. They just quietly change the shipping dates.

They're either making big changes to the site so it doesn't collapse like a limp souffle every time someone whispers the word 'iPhone' anywhere near it, or they're adding stuff to the pages, such as network details.

Or both.

Isn't it annoying having to keep explaining this. In future, I think I'll just refer people to Expansys.co.uk so they can see how expensive the "Free" phones their networks give them really are.

I agree, however the desire is £400 on there which will be the next gripe. If it's such an issue, go and get a desire 🙂

lol, that wasn't a lash out, just a simple observation. I have order simfree so I have what I want. Just feel sorry for those who want a contract similar who still have no info.

OOOOOOOOOH. I get it now.
By reading a few posts I see that the Pay&Go prices on Apples site are Sim free. Thank god!
I still don't know what Subsidizing is though.

Anyhow, what sort of price can we expect to see from the carriers for the Pay&Go handsets then? 🙂

Just got my Confirmation/Processing email. Good cos i don't wanna deal with the online store again...wow.

Time for brunch then.

i ordered 16gb sim-free to collect from apple store. i wanted to check out black but figure that although not on sale they may have some white display units so if i don't like them i will buy the black there and then. if i like the white, i may just walk-out quietly and let someone else buy my reserve...and wait for white.

I managed to place an order about 20 mins ago. No idea how.

I believe what happened was that about an hour ago the apple store loaded to the next page after choosing the phone but then went down!

So I clicked on my history in an attempt to bypass the site being down notices and it loaded and pre charged my card and gave me a confirmation!!!

At the time I thought apples site was back up but that doesn't appear to be the case!

I had a simple plan 1) order iPhone 4 2) order dock 3) order bumper
Doing all separate to avoid delays.

Although honestly if O2 release prices I will upgrade and either return or cancel my pre order as £600 is a lot and I'd rather not pay up front!

Guys
I am on Apple Chat
According to them, the site is being updated with more iPhone details, and they are not out of stock, just updating details...

Hi, I'm back.

What's happened? I can see ya'll talking about iPhone 4 prices but the Apple store is down for me. What gives?

So presumably that's likely to be... oh let's take a punt and say O2 pay as you go prices? Maybe contract as well considering they've been letting you reserve a phone for collection on SIM Free, PAYG and Contract?

edit Just thinking about this, I wonder if part of Apple's problems with the store have been caused by a higher-than-expected level of traffic because none of the networks outside the US got their pre-order pages up and running when they were supposed to (uh, supposed to being the time they'd penciled in with Apple rather than a statement implying they have an obligation to us to get pre-orders available at 9am today)? So everyone just mobbed the Apple site instead, even if only looking for cost information. Idle speculation I know but it passes the time.

I use "fell over" to describe technical failures all the time... No idea where it come from, but I guess it is kinda funny... I like it though 😱)

Are you an engineer by chance? We use "fell over" all the time here for when an engine stops randomly during testing, or for any other unexplained failure of something technical. Can't say I'd heard it before I started, but everyone here uses it and so I just sort of picked it up!

I ordered i have an order number but no email as yet what are my chances i have managed to reserve a collect at trafford centre just in case. I did order a dock but i think that's why i got a delivery date of july 2nd will i be able to cancel the dock and just have phone

subsidize |ˈsəbsəˌdīz|
verb [ trans. ]
support (an organization or activity) financially : it was beyond the power of a state to subsidize a business.
• pay part of the cost of producing (something) to reduce prices for the buyer : the government subsidizes basic goods including sugar, petroleum, and wheat.

Subsidising is when O2 (for example) say to you "We'll sell you the 32GB iPhone 4 for (say) £300 instead of £600, but you'll need to commit to an 18 month contract, minimum, and at least £25 per month bills but more likely £35 if you want any decent allowances."

So, you spend £300 up front and then £35 a month for 18 months, say, before you can change tariff or get a new subsidised phone. Alternatively, spend £600 up front and stick whatever SIM you're currently using in there (for example, my £15 Simplicity sim, 12 month contract).

So O2 (or whoever) 'subsidise' the cost of the phone, in return for gouging you over 18 months with an inflated tariff, which covers the cost of the phone that you appear to be saving.

Do we know if this an “Apple” hour or a real hour?

Haha good point.

I still don't know what Subsidizing is though.

If you buy a phone and take out a contract with the carrier (e.g. 18 months.), you commit to pay them £x each month for 18 months. Because of this, they sell you the phone at a subsidized price.

For example, I took out an 18month contract on a 16Gb iPhone 3G. I paid £169 for the phone (the subsidized price), then had to pay £35 a month for 18 months.

The difference between the price to just buy the phone (£500/£600 for iPhone4) and the price you pay the carrier for the phone when you take out a contract is the amount it is subsidized by.

The issue here, is that no one knows what the subsidized prices will be like....so lots of people are on the fence about what to do at this moment - not that you can do a lot since the store is down.
