What's the difference between the Reserve + Collect option, which is currently working... and 'pre-ordering' through the Apple Store, which is currently down?

Also, it's interesting that the Reserve + Collect option gives you the option of Pay As You Go AND Sim-Free, indicating that they may be priced differently...

Despite that, there's no guarantee the Apple rep was correct. They could just be sorting out why the hell their website fell over in about 10 minutes flat... 😉

Fell over.lol. Such a funny way to describe a website crashing. Made me laugh.

PAYG will be subsidised by whichever network you sign up with, so yes they will be priced differently.

I don't think they will be, somehow. They just need to know how many people coming in are going to need help setting it up with the SIM etc, and how many will be taking the iPhone and walking out immediately.

The difference between Reserve and Collect, and Pre-Ordering, is when you pre-order you hand over your payment details, tell them where to send it, then sit back and wait. With Reservations, you say you want one, they hold one, then you have to go down there and pay for it before the end of the day.

I think they add that to cover their back in case they end up selling it by mistake.

I agree. In particular the first sentence of the offending paragraph, namely "Pre-authorization does not guarantee iPhone availability at an Apple Retail Store." covers them for everything from an issue with deliveries to a particular store right up to a worldwide glitch that pushes back launch day.

Wow, there's a rather decent Cardiff presence on here. All from Cardiff or surrounding areas? I'm from the town of Gavin and Stacey myself.

Here is a screenshot of the email. Very basic with not much info in it. You won't be able to print this off and use it though, just re-apply for instore pickup when the site comes back up.

Thanks for doing that. It's the same email I got.

I'm just across the bridge from you in Bristol. Imagine that 🙂

How come you need to re-apply for your In-Store pickup??

crazy that no uk operators have realeased anything other than a register interest so far.

It's not crazy, it's just inconvenient. Why are people so quick to lash out when they don't get what they want, when they want it, NOW NOW NOW?

The iPhone arrives next week. Order one from Apple today and pay full whack, or if you want one on contract wait and see what the networks offer.

CHILL, WINSTON.

the fact that the US store is down as well would suggest is more to do with lack of supply than apple releasing carrier pricing details

I have reserved a sim free phone at my local apple shop just in case I don't get one through one of the networks but I hope I do because I don't want to wait in line for hours.

Well I'd rather go and collect from the store on the 24th, since I'll be in work but can pop in for an hour or two. If I have it delivered to home, no doubt it won't turn up til about 3pm, I'll be in work and then have to have it redelivered.

So Reserve + Collect is my best option?
