I'm just after a ballpark figure but

How much of a saving is there in getting payg + Simplicity compared to getting on 2 year contract (I'm thinking £35 contract)??

Thanks

I hope to get it on PAYG from orange and finally leave O2 and their crappy connection. I also hope it comes with the 12 months free 3G and wifi again.

I've just done a calculation so as to give you an answer and the results are quite interesting.

It looks as if O2 have got wise to the savings that could be made by buying a PAYG iPhone and then using an iPhone Simplicity tariff and have recently adjusted their tariffs to even things up. These costings are obviously done with a 3GS iPhone as we don't know the cost of the new iPhone yet.

Assuming that you wanted a 32GB iPhone with 600 minutes per month, unlimited texts, and unlimited internet, and that the comparison is with a 2 year contract, the figures show that the contract option actually costs you £10 less, but two years is a hell of a long contract IMHO.

2 Year Contract:
Cost of iPhone - £179
'Line Rental' - £849
Total: £1,019

Buying iPhone:
Cost of iPhone - £549
'Line Rental' - £480
(N.B. This option assumes that you are happy to have a 12 month Simplicity Contract [which gives you 600 mins per month rather than 300 mins per month for £20] rather than the normal 30 day 'rolling contract').
Total: £1,029

I'm praying for a payg release straight away, or I can't get one.....

Nice to see guys from the iPad pages are here now as well. I hope they do them on pre order as well but if the 3GS is anything to go by they will only do pre orders on contract and then pre pay will be released the same time but in stores

CD3660 has given a good breakdown and I agree in his case it's probably best to opt for the contract. My situation is a bit different so for me a contract is much more expensive and prohibitive. We have three iPhones in the house. My son and I have a 3GS each and my wife has my old original iPhone and all are on O2 PAYG. My son and I got the original iPhone the day they came out on contract. Both of us hardly make calls. So we paid £35 a month for the privilege of owning an iPhone. The 3G was released part way into the contract and O2 didn't want to loose contracts, so they allowed to you get the new iPhone, renew your contract and restart it from there. Great, O2 were lovely. Then 12 months later along came the 3GS, eyes lit up, we wanted that as well. O2 got a tad greedy at this point and wouldnt offer the same new phone restart contact deal. You had to still pay your contract but they would let you have another phone for another contract along side it at no discount. So a lot of people said sod you O2. I bought a 3GS outright on PAYG and put my existing contract sim in it as did my son. We still had nearly 6 month of contract left. I stuck the PAYG sim in a drawer which had a years free internet ticking away. Soon as the contract finished I told O2 to shove their contract they are not having anymore £35 a month off me. And back in went the PAYG sim. That brings us to now. We have free internet and I top up my phone £10 a month. £7.50 of that goes to a sort of family and friends thing. I nominate a number of other O2 numbers (My son and wife) and we all get free calls to each other. I make very very little other calls so the £10 a month easily cover it. My son cant remember when he last topped up. Same with my wife. So as you see for us its a lot cheaper. The free O2 internet runs out next month. We have decided to put a Three PAYG SIM in then. O2 has always been crap here. They promised all sorts of network improvements and they never came.
But one thing to considered. Apple bring out a new better and greater iPhone every year. What happens next year when your stuck with your 18 month or 2 year contract. Bit of a long story, sorry about that.

Wasn't PAYG available on Pre-Order as well on release day? I bought a PAYG on the day of release but I never thought to pre-order, I just enjoyed the queue and the atmosphere.

if you buy a 12 month sim only contract through quidco you get £100 cashback which will bring your total to £929.
Then assuming you do the same next year you could get another £100 cashback which would bring the total down to just £829.

I did this in in febuary and got my cashback without a problem.

Thanks, that's very useful information and also demonstrates how useful the internet is, forums in particular.

It's amazing how many money saving tips there are around here. Personally I've saved a bundle over the last few years by browsing the net.

I should also say thanks to Boblister for showing me the benefits of the cut-down pre-loaded data sim card from 3 (and others) for the iPad, available on eBay! :)

Hey CD,

Thanks so much for taking the time to calculate this. I have to admit I'm one of the lazy types out there so I don't know if I can really be bothered setting up Quidco (as subsequently mentioned). But all V useful info! ;)

I came to the end of my 18month non iphone contract, although I was using a PAYG o2 iphone with it.

I called up O2 retentions and was put on a tariff called O2 Simplicity 20 for iPhone.

Get 1200 texts, 600 mins, Unlimited web and wifi and visual voicemail for £20 a month on a one month rolling contract.

Also the benefit of buying a PAYG phone is that you can change your phone every year if you want and arent tied into a 24 month contract. Easily worth paying the extra £10 for me.

This is how mine would break down (I assume this will translate to the 4th iphone)

iphone 3GS 16GB £449
comes with 12 months free data
and I would only top it up by about £20 in a whole year
then after the 12 months get it unlocked for £15
and place a 3 simcard in for 2GB of data for £5 a month for 12 months = £60
grand total of £544 for 24 months.

the reason I only top it up by a measly £20 is because of the free data as I now use email as a replacement for texts and like most people dont use voice calls very often and if I do then I can use skype

plus with payandgo you get the advantage of always upgrading and therefore selling your old phone right now a good condition 16GB 3GS sells for between £270 - £375 you can minus from a new phone, the reason I go for the 16GB iphone is because in the resale compared to the 32GB you dont loose about £80

I think thats pretty savy with money :D

ps I seriously recommend you all use email esp if the people you text have or uses an email enabled phones even if you dont have a data plan assuming data is 30p per MB an average email only costs 0.5p and a full res 5MP picture (not the tiny MMS) plus text will only cost ~30p the same as a MMS message

If Orange have the new iPhone then I'm definitely switching to Orange! Better 3G coverage and it will be less busy :)

Also pay and go for sure. Selling my old 3GS to pay for it.

who you with now? I was lookin to switch from orange for coverage reasons to O2 more so cause they seem to atleast offer what I'm on now on 18 month contract for no extra cost unlike voda and orange

How much will it cost?

What do you people reckon the iPhone HD will sell for?

I'm on orange SIM only now, but I payed £99 for my 8Gb 3G with O2 back when it was launched in July 2008. This was on a £35 p/m 18 month contract.

Any predictions of how much it will cost on a similar tarriff, and do you think Orange as well as the other networks will get the new iPhone straight away?

I guess we might have to wait and see. If it's too expensive and/or not enough new features, I won't bother.

My current phone is falling to pieces, and has been for months. I've put off getting a new one to buy the new iPhone, hope it is out soon!

And as for PAYG, I'm getting one, then putting my current O2 PAYG sim in, its £15 top-up and you get free internet and texts. :D

Looking to get my first iphone, hoping that the 64gb payg 4g model is £550 or less like the current top end 32gb 3gs!!!!

I'm on contract with Vodafone, hope Apple release the iPhone all over the world at the same time. Fed-up with new tech to be released in the US first then several months later, here in the U.K.
Don't they care about us Brits:(

One thing though, do you guys think it will be better going to the store or ordering one online?

Well ordering online youll likely get the phone around 2pm delivered with no hassle, going to store youll likey get the phone earlier in the morning after queuing for a couple of hours, delivery for me.
