Assuming that you wanted a 32GB iPhone with 600 minutes per month, unlimited texts, and unlimited internet, and that the comparison is with a 2 year contract, the figures show that the contract option actually costs you £10 less, but two years is a hell of a long contract IMHO.

2 Year Contract:
Cost of iPhone - £179
'Line Rental' - £849
Total: £1,019

I've been looking at Orange contracts and the prices are similar:

24 month contract (600 min, unlimited texts, 'unlimited' data):
Cost of phone - £179
'Line rental' - £840
Total £1019.

18 month contract (600 min, 500 texts, 'unlimited' data):
Cost of phone - £280
'Line rental' - £630
Total £910

Of course with the 18-month option you only get 18 months of calls, texts and data so adding in another 6 months of £25 a month (this is what I currently pay for the month-to-month 600 min, unlimited texts, 500 MB contract I'm on) gives a total of £1060.

Rather surprisingly then I think I might be going with a 24 month contract. I'll buy the 2011 iPhone in the middle of this PAYG, plonk that on the contract and give the 2010 iPhone plus the PAYG data to the good lady. This is similar to what we did when I went from 3G to 3GS (except I had an 18-month contract then) and it seems to work - I get to feed my addiction and the CFO gets a phone and data :)

It is great ..............it is really true or are they just rumors .........i have a 3g version right now
i want to have 4g version now so iam pretty excited about this..........i hope it is coming....
It's rumours but they are very convincing. I hope you will forgive the implication in the suggestion, but to read about this there are worse places to start than here:

No you could not pre order the pay as you go but was available on day one but you had to buy 10 pounds credit

Thats how I got mine. I didn't even try to pre-order so I had no idea. There was two queues though. One for the pre-order and the usual queue. I paid my £10 credit and they activated it there and then. That annoyed me as I had several months of contract left. I put my contract sim in the new 3GS and stuck the PAYG sim in a drawer till the contract ran out. When I finally did start using the PAYG sim several months of free internet had ticked away. Thats O2 for you. Next month I will pay £15, get it unlocked and put it on Three.

Yeah I might get a pre pay and then get the iPhone simplicity contract at £15 pounds a month that way if I keep is for 2 years I should save cash because I will skip the 4gs as i didn't really need the 3GS in retrospect

im just going to get it on pay as you go and *hope* its on O2, then just transfer my sim over from my 3GS.

I'm just hoping the next iPhone is worth the wait. I could have got the 3gS but decided to see what was coming next.

Same here. The 3gs wasn't enough of an improvement to justify me upgrading at the time. This is the longest I've ever had a phone and while I'm not bored with it per se, I'm ready for a change now.

Can anybody explain what happens when you are on a 18 month contract with o2 but in 12 months the new updated iphone comes out. Do o2 give you any discount or do have to wait for your existing contract to end??

I really want the next iPhone and currently weighing up whether it is better to get it on a £30/35 18 month contact or buy it PAYG and put in iPhone simplicity 12 month contract in it. Thanks for any help! :)

i dont think O2 offer such a deal, i think you have 2 options:

1) buy out the rest of your contract and start a new contract when iphone 4 comes out

2) get it on pay as you go.

im thinking of pre ordering the new iphone if the option is available as i wont have time to go down and pick it up because of exams, if i pre order will i get the iphone on release date if i pre order on time or will i get it a couple of days after. thanks

who you with now? I was lookin to switch from orange for coverage reasons to O2 more so cause they seem to atleast offer what I'm on now on 18 month contract for no extra cost unlike voda and orange

According to the Ofcom 3G coverage report last year. Orange is one of the best. You can download the report from here http://www.ofcom.org.uk/consumer/2010/01/3g-or-not-3g-2/

I always have internet access with O2 but it's not 3G where I live.

I'm wondering that instead of you actually using that top up you could have given it away (or sold it at face) you could have just put in your contract sim and it would have activated fine, then when your contract ran out then topped up the payandgo and had 12 months of free data,
I cant see any reason that shouldnt have worked. beacause the payandgo sim only knows its been bought when it is first used and activated with a topup so if it was the next day or seven months down the line it shouldnt matter.

but yeah thoroughly recommend 3 mobile, 2GB of data for £5 valid for 30 days, and best of all it's not limited at all, if you want to voip or watch iplayer they dont mind it's your data you paid for

Because I didn't get a choice at the time. The condition they sold you the PAYG iPhone in the Apple show was that you bought a £10 sim and they activated it there and then for you...the bomb starts ticking so to speak. So it sat in a drawer ticking away much to my annoyance. You can imagine the mayhem when the 3gs launched, similar to the iPad. I believe some payg purchasers got away with the sim inactivated. I didn't.

I have used Three voice in the past so I am quite used to them. One thing that annoyed me with them is the habit the phone has of swapping between 3G and 2G and dropping the damned call in the process. Plus you cannot do like I do on O2 and turn 3G off when I am not using the Internet to saven battery life. Try that connected to Three and they will ban your phone from the sim. They insist you use 3G where it's available.

As you have to top up £10 when buying PAYG does anyone know if i transfer my current sims contract number onto this sim, saying as how its a microsim, will o2 just take £10 from my bill.

They will probably do like they offered to me last year. You can pay off your contract and start a new one, no discount etc. Or run two contracts at the same time. Alternatively do what I did and buy PAYG and runt on the contract sim till the contract ends. If you get a sim with a years free Internet like I did try and prevent them from activating it at that point. They were a lot more understanding going from the original iPhone to the 3G. The just let you restart a new contract without having to pay the old one off.

Which network?

I'm on O2 at the moment and their coverage/speed is extremely poor - they don't even cover my house. I'm looking for a network that is reliable, extensive and fast, with fair data allowances. I'd love visual voicemail, but I guess I can live without it as it's exclusive to O2. Can anyone recommend a good one? :)

I have packaged up my beloved iphone to send to envirophone. Hope I don't have to wait for too long after the 7th June for the new iphone to be released as I'll be using a crappy toy-like samsung phone in the meantime..... :(

Yea i got my 3GS in August from the apple store, they did open it there and set it up.

when i got my 3G in September from an O2 shop they didn't open it.
