had this email from o2 this morning, I'd asked them (before the existing customer announcement) if they knew when id be able to upgrade, if it was online or instore and if they were doing a pre-orders.

Hello Richard

Thanks for writing to us about upgrading to iPhone 4.

Richard, I understand that you want to know how and when you could
upgrade to the new fabulous iPhone 4. I'll surely provide you the
details.

You'll be glad to know that you can upgrade from launch (24 June 2010)
by contacting your nearest O2 store or Online.

I would suggest that you upgrade by going to one of our stores on 24
June 2010. The handsets will be available on a first come/first served
basis.

You will be unable to pre-order as we only have a limited amount of
stock from Apple.

You can register online at http://shop.o2.co.uk/new-iphone/ to be the
first to know and receive regular email updates. We've had thousands of
customers sign up already.

I hope you find the information useful.

That goes against what they officially released yesterday, according to the link, iPhone 4s will only be available in store from the 24th, and not online until the end of July:

**edit** you probably new this already judging by your "before the existing customer announcement" comment!

Just spoke to my local O2 store. They have received a batch of micro sims but will only give them to customers who have had an email from o2 saying they are allowed one

Since apple is selling unlocked version of iPhone 4 in UK, may I know if I get the phone with a contract from 1 of the telecoms, will the set still be unlocked?

I can't answer you for sure, but, I too have one reserved. It is my understanding that each reservation will be held until close of play on the launch day. There would be precious little point in having a pre-order system if, when you arrived on the day, the order wasn't there for you.

I have a 70 mile round trip to my local Apple store, if it ain't there, I'll be looking for answers!

Thanks for your reply! That's how I understand it too, and hopefully the way it'll work out! I have to get on a train to Exeter on Thursday to get to the nearest Apple store so like you - will be asking for answers! :p

I was one of the people desperate for the 3G on launch day - I ended up getting messed around by O2 despite putting my pre-order in as soon as their site went live, so I went to my local city centre at 0430ish and got one from CPW. I thought there was a lot of hype then, but it seems this revision is dwarfing that judging by this thread! However, this is exactly what Apple & the carriers want (create perception of supply constraints and stimulate more demand as a result) and I reckon there may be enough on launch day. I'm going to give it a go on the Friday as I only work until 1200. If there aren't any, I'll just wait until there are. Part of me wishes I had pre-ordered a load of sim-free handsets from Apple and flogged them on eBay at a bumper profit! Knowing my luck though, I'd end up losing on them!

Your theory may be right to a point, but nobody knows of course apart from Apple for sure.

However, something to bear in mind: shipping both in the States and here in the UK is now from 14th July. But of course it may be different on the day for people who just turn up.

From my experience of the original 3G launch, supplies were constrained then, this one is likely to be a massive launch. To say there is going to be a huge demand, is simply putting it mildly.

Good luck though, and not to boast for the god knows how many times, I ordered mine directly from Apple UK, delivers on my birthday 24th June - only 5 days to go!

If you are looking to line up for a contract iPhone, prepare for looooong queues. It takes a good 10-15 minutes per customer to sort out a contract.

To those that wish to know it has been communicated that most if not all O2 Retail stores will be opening @ 08:02am Thursday 24th June.

Look forward to seeing you all there!

*Crosses fingers for a White :apple: iPhone4 stock delivery in the next couple of days* :p

Yeah, "mega" demand may have been more apt a description!

Great that your birthday is on launch day, I hope the courier gets there early for you!

I start work at 0700, but might ride my bike through Portsmouth City centre to see all the campers!

I can't believe how patient I am about getting one this time! I suppose it is after having to accept I was still in contract with the 3G when the 3GS come out. Also, it gives me time to wait for my Sena ultraslim case to arrive!

Best of luck to all those hoping to get one on launch day - I remember the feeling I had when I got my from CPW and walked past the people still waiting outside O2!

I did think it was a bit strange, but going to try and give it ago upgrading online as I won't be able to get into a shop before the monday after launch day...i'm hoping you can just upgrade online rather than buy as a new customer online...time will tell!

Sounds like you'll be enjoying your new toy nice & early on your birthday then!

Wrong, all iPhone 4's being sold by apple at the apple store are unlocked. I don't know about direct from a network, but from apple, they are all unlocked.

If you read the original posters' question, the answer is correct.

They are unlocked if buying from Apple direct for full price, but then locked the moment a contract or payg plan is attached.

So yes, locked.

nope, subsidised iphones are also unlocked, if you buy from the apple store. I checked with apple :)
again, I don't know about direct from say, a vodafone store.

How can you know that? They aren't even out yet, I doubt even the people who work at shops know.

So everything needs to be out to know the answer?

They are locked as already been stated, the moment a contract or a payg plan is attached, I can't find the specific apple article to quote to you, but trust me, the networks are going to be locking down the phones.

Looking forward to see the mayhem unfold as thousands of UK customers slug it out at carrier outlets and Apple Stores all over the country.

Sadly, I'll have to wait until August at the very earliest!

Anyone know what is a safe time to get to O2 on Thursday morning?

All depends on how large the city the store is located in, Judging from interest iv'e taken from customers the launch is going to be busier than the iPhone3Gs

Your saying if we bought an iPhone direct from apple. Then went to a network to put a contract or PAYG sim in. It would automatically lock the phone. The phones sold direct from apple are always unlocked. We do not know about the phones sold through the networks, but I'd assume they are locked.
