Have we confirmed yet whether unactivated iPad Micro Sims work for existing contracts using the sim swap?

Not so, I called Apple the other day, as have many others and they are offering contracts on all networks who are released on the day. New and Upgrading.

If you plan to wait outside O2, I hope you aren't a new customer, as you won't get a phone that way

Indeed. That's what I said. But it would make sense that they're not offering a subsidy on this contract, as this is offered direct from the carrier. I think everyone's going to be paying full price for the handset, who buy it from Apple.

There is no way that Apple will charge unlocked or PAYG prices for 24 month contracts. There would be chaos in the stores as thousands of people turn up to be very disappointed.

Apple sell the iphones to the carriers at a selling price, however many apple sell in store the carriers will be charged for, and the revenue from the sales go directly to the carriers when you do your order in store, it's not difficult for them to set up such a system.

I hope you're right. But after reserving a phone at £4/599, it suggests that how you use it beyond that is supplementary.

Especially in light of O2's 'loyalty' announcement.

Can we phone up and purchase the new iPhone? on O2? I'm confused with the exsisting customers thing.

Can anyone help?

when i reserved my iphone it did not state a price, just the specification, and my confirmation email does not included any pricing details. Also Apple has also included a link to 'what to bring' and ask for all the regular documentation to start a new contract, it states on that page 'To agree to pay your monthly o2, Orange or Vodafone bill via direct debit' etc. So they must be accepting new contacts for all three networks

Isn't that what happened with the original iPhone launch? £270 on a contract at a time the pound was strong, i'd be surprised if there was any real subsidy there.

had this email from o2 this morning, I'd asked them (before the existing customer announcement) if they knew when id be able to upgrade, if it was online or instore and if they were doing a pre-orders.

Hello Richard

Thanks for writing to us about upgrading to iPhone 4.

Richard, I understand that you want to know how and when you could
upgrade to the new fabulous iPhone 4. I'll surely provide you the
details.

You'll be glad to know that you can upgrade from launch (24 June 2010)
by contacting your nearest O2 store or Online.

I would suggest that you upgrade by going to one of our stores on 24
June 2010. The handsets will be available on a first come/first served
basis.

You will be unable to pre-order as we only have a limited amount of
stock from Apple.

You can register online at http://shop.o2.co.uk/new-iphone/ to be the
first to know and receive regular email updates. We've had thousands of
customers sign up already.

I hope you find the information useful.

Last year, the 3gs the launch, I queued up at the Apple Store, asked the guys there if I could upgrade my o2 contract and they said yes.

I went in, it took a while as they were using some sort of o2 portal but I upgraded my phone and only paid the subsidised price.

Its been reported on these forums they'll be doing the same this year and I don't see why that isn't the case.

The in store reservation system doesnt state a price and does show the option for pay monthly.

There's no reason why that pay monthly can't be to new and upgrading customers.

I'll be getting a sim free one and when my contract runs out in December I'll see how the other networks are holding up with the iPhone.

Hope this helps

I agree that there is no way Apple will charge full price for the phone when taking out a contract. Just like with the 3G, I walked into the Apple store, took out the £45 a month contract and got the phone free.
The apple rep set up my contract on the iMac in store.

But that price was advertised beforehand, and it was the only way to get the original iPhone, even direct from O2. Since the 3G it has always been heavily subsidised on contracts.

So you just went in and asked for a Micro SIM?

Did you need any other I.D ... iPhone 4 pre-order print out or anything?

If you can just walk in and ask for a Micro SIM that would be ideal ahead of when I get my own iPhone 4.

Picked mine up last night. They didn't ask me for ID or proof that I'd preordered. Asked for phone number and the standard postcode/house number/name and then sent the number swap request. That sent the SMS to my phone and they entered it there and then. Within five minutes my phone dropped 3G and then all network connectivity and I popped the new SIM in (thank goodness I keep a SIM ejection tool on my keyring).

That said, I've heard some stores are happy to give them out, some won't give them out until Monday.

I'd phone your local branch(es) and ask if they can do the swap now. For safety I'd take at least your current phone, ID and proof you've preordered.

In my case, O2 have done a lot of things wrong this last fortnight, mostly due to their poor communication, but they got the SIM transfer right for me. Happy to be grandfathered in on Simplicity 20. 600 minutes, 1200 texts and unlimited Internet.

Agree. The reservation 'what to bring' page clearly says about signing up to a minimum length contract with whatever carrier you choose. As the only iPhone plans with a minimum term include the subsidised cost of the handset, if Apple charged full price on top of this they would essentially be charging you twice for the handset. Now I usually wouldn't complain about a lot of things, but that would be insane if that was sprung on reservers!

For potential UK buyers of the 32 Gig iPhone, I have calculated total cost of ownership and actual cost per month (total cost of ownership / contract length) for each of the 3 UK networks that have released pricing. Where possible, I have also included Quidco cashback although ordering through Carphonewarehouse and Quidco gets the best cashback of £70.

If there is enough interest, I'll do the 16Gig version.

Phil

Useful table mate, cheers. But when comparing 18mth against 24mth one has to consider the time value of money - ie, £1 today is worth more than £1 in the future (providing an economy is in an inflationary, rather than deflationary, position).

that's cos it's listed as GMT... mine was placed at 9:21 BST, but order status says 8:21 GMT..

also, my order status says "NOT YET SHIPPED" :(

Mine was ordered at exactly 1 minute before yours and is still not shipped.

08:20 GMT OR 01:20 PDT

It seems like you're new to the iphone way of doing things? If you take out a contract which includes subsidies, whereever that is, you will only pay for the subsidised handset. This has been true for the previous phones, where you can buy from Apple, who will arrange a contract for you at the same time.

Whether you buy from Apple or Orange (haha) the same handset price goes directly to Apple, and the contract is always direct with the carrier :)

I was one of the people desperate for the 3G on launch day - I ended up getting messed around by O2 despite putting my pre-order in as soon as their site went live, so I went to my local city centre at 0430ish and got one from CPW. I thought there was a lot of hype then, but it seems this revision is dwarfing that judging by this thread! However, this is exactly what Apple & the carriers want (create perception of supply constraints and stimulate more demand as a result) and I reckon there may be enough on launch day. I'm going to give it a go on the Friday as I only work until 1200. If there aren't any, I'll just wait until there are. Part of me wishes I had pre-ordered a load of sim-free handsets from Apple and flogged them on eBay at a bumper profit! Knowing my luck though, I'd end up losing on them!
