The U.K. iPhone 4 Thread

Hang on, so if I pay the £340 (17 months of £20) then I don't get the new handset for free? I don't mind being tied into the contract still (parents pay it, always had same price contract), but will I have to cough up another £90 pushing the upgrade price to £430?!?

Yes, £90 or whatever O2 state the actual phone cost is, on top of the monthly contract price.

Just like previous O2 iPhone contracts, the actual phone price will vary depending on the length of contract you sign up for and also the monthly cost of your contract.

If I remember correctly, if you take out a £45/month 24 month (or £50/month 18 month) iPhone 3GS contract, you get a 16Gb 3GS for free. Or £65/month/18 month or £60/month/24 month for 32Gb 3GS.

So, assuming O2 keep the contract prices the same (as is being reported), there probably will be ways to get a free iPhone 4, but at the expense of a very pricy monthly payment.

Hmmm...

Buy out contract = 180
O2 Recycle = 240

this leaves me with 60 quid to spend. it is tempting.....

worth me doing it this way though?

What the hell, that is a complete joke. Is there any way I can end my contract early and get the new iPhone on PAYG?

It's not a joke. Apple has released an iPhone every year in June since 2007, so if you wanted the new iPhone, you should have waited.

Yes, pay the rest of your contract. Work it out by this: £20 multiplied by the number of months left to go on your contraact.

Then buy a Pay and Go iPhone.

Then if you want, buy a Simplicity for iPhone tariff.

Do you guys think that O2 will be doing preorders? Did they do it last year?

It doesn't look like it at the moment. They are saying you can purchase on the 24th, If they were doing pre-order I would have expected to mention it as well.

They didn't do pre-orders last year, not even Apple did in the UK. The only company was Carphone Warehouse.

Assuming that pricing for the iPhone 4 remains the same as it has been for the iPhone 3GS then I would say yes.

I wouldn't bother with O2 recycle though - you'll probably get a few more quid on eBay.

Argh all these "strategies" for getting a better deal are confusing me.

I don't understand why people are buying PAYG and then getting simplicity... surely the PAYG will cost £550 ish... and paying £15 instead of £35 for 18 months only saves half that amount....

It's simple really. Of course, we'll have to wait until the real prices are revealed before we can decide on the best way forward.

I'm looking to buy the 32GB phone. Let's use current prices as an example.

18 month contract = 18 x £35 = £630 + £279 for the phone = £909 total

Using a simplicity contract for the same period:
18 x £15 = £270 + £550 for the phone = £820

Yes, I will have to pay a larger amount upfront, but in the long run I'll save £89 (It's better than nothing).

Not to mention that I'm not tied to a contract which means I can upgrade again next year or switch to a different network if they were to offer better deals (and who knows what next year brings if they decide to bring Facetime to 3G).

I think that's his point. You can't take advantage of the early termination offer and then buy a PAYG phone. You have to take out a new iPhone 4 CONTRACT

Right then, looks like the possibility of me getting an iP4 is much smaller now. Seriously, is the £230 I will have to pay if I can sell my 3GS for £200 worth it? I am tempted just to wait now until next years release, the iPhone 5. This sucks so bad, I really wanted that phone.

I pre-ordered my 3G for delivery on launch day through the O2 website. I remember it well, the website kept on crashing.

I'm quite surprised they haven't mentioned if they're gonna do it this year.

You could buy the phone on Pay and Go and stick your SIM into it.

I might actually do that, then I wouldn't be tied into a contract for anywhere near as long. The thing is, I will still be quite a bit out of pocket. However, that deal does look really really tempting. How would I go about putting my SIM into it? Cut it down?

Just ask O2 for a micro-sim, PAYG comes with the micro-sim.

I'm just hoping that PAYG iPhone 4's will still have the 12 month unlimited data bundle that the 3G and 3GS had - which will effectively knock £120 off the price already

I've decided:

I'm going to keep current 3G S until Dec 2010 which is end of contract. Then buy a simplicity Sim for it. By June 2011 there will be a new iPhone*, from that point I will buy a new contract. Unless I upgrade before December, theres no point in upgrading really... I may as well pay 6 monts pay as you go to save money then sell my 3G S and buy iPhone 5

*assuming history repeats itself.

Sorted. Now I can look for my next purchase, a External monitor and MBP stand :D and dreared car insurance :p

You could just buy a PAYG and continue to use your current contract sim until it ends and then switch to simplicity.

No different really, let's say you have 6 months left. For an early upgrade you'd have to pay £120 extra and then you'll be stuck for another 18 months.

OR if you continue your contract with a PAYG, assuming you're on the £35/month contract, that would be the same £20 extra for that period. But after that you can downgrade to simplicity.

It depends if you don't mind being stuck with a contract or if you want the freedom of a simplicity tariff.

Edit: It seems other people have the same idea, lol. You can ask O2 to change your current sim to a micro-sim. I even think they will be sending those out to people with a contract that expressed their interest anyway.

It will cost me £100 to pay off the rest of my contract.

I will take up a new contract for the 32GB iPhone 4.

How much will the handset cost?

If prices will be similar to that of the 3GS, I assume it will cost me £270ish.

So, where are people getting the £80/£90 price for the handset?

I thought you had to pay the same one off price no matter if you're upgrading or starting a new contract. Does o2 charge cheaper prices when you upgrade iPhone to newer iPhone?

I hope that made sense...

That was 3G, they didn't do it for the 3GS last year. Could well have been because they don't think the website will cope.
