Vodafone or O2?

Apparently Vodafone has a much faster 3G service than any other network in the UK right? If so how much faster and is it worth going with Vodafone over any other network?

I am currently with Vodafone with a Nokia phone and my contract ends next month. I am thinking of going with O2 because my broadband at home is with O2 and they give a £5 discount per month on that if I have a mobile with them too.

But Vodafone just called me up and said I can get the iphone 4 available for pre-order on June 15th with their much faster 3G service...

They might be fast, but there is not much of it. Have a look at the link to Ofcom maps posted above. They are the worst of the lot.

Not everyone can take the upfront hit of the PAYG handset cost so it's horses for courses.

Yes, getting a new smartphone upfront is expensive - if you can't afford it, look for a second hand one from last year. I got my current iphone second hand from another MR member, and it will sell for exactly the same price as the iphones that people brought new.

Really, you only have to pay the full upfront price once, then after that, you can sell your phone every time to fund the next one. (providing you haven't lost or broken it .. )

Getting a contract locks you into their prices for 18/24 months. PAYG / Sim-only prices have been dropping like a stone over the last few years, (probably near bottom now) allowing you to pick and choose which network will give you the best prices. With PAC codes now mandatory, it's easy to have your number follow you.

I've been texting DATE to 21302 and got nothing back. i've tried four times now.
Is it just me or has everyone else got there info back?
I know I'm out of contract as it were since Jan or Feb.

i just texted the number and ive yet to have anything back

DATE -> 21302 is working. It might be slow for PM customers; but as a PAYG customer, it's acknowledging my status.

All these new providers... what difference will it make?

Okay, so we've now got a large range of networks available:

  • O2
  • Orange
  • Vodaphone
  • T-Mobile
  • Three
  • Tesco Mobile

The question is will this make any difference for us as consumers?

I was hoping for more aggressive pricing when Orange, Vodaphone and Tesco joined the band wagon and was disappointed; I'm not getting my hopes this time either. What does everyone else think?

For one thing, in my experience Three and T-Mobile are generally the cheapest networks out there - will they make the first move?

For what it's worth, I was with Three for a couple of years and found their service atrocious. It seems every other person who is or has been with Three has vowed to never go back. For me, I experienced a complete failure to deal with a few service issues I experienced, and then it took me literally several hours over several days to get my PAC code and leave them. They would have to undercut O2 and Orange by at least 50% for me to even consider them again.

Hey guys just wondered if im getting the iphone 4 as a contract upgrade i cant order from apple right? as they only do PAYG so id need to wait for o2 to announce pre order. Also if im going into a new contract (24 month) do i need to pre order and pick it up in store to start the contract or can contracts be started online ? thanks !

55 pages, wow.

I am sure readers will excuse me if my point has already been made and is buried somewhere in the previous pages. But I have just read all the UK carriers have announced that they will be carrying the iPhone 4, I am pretty confident that at least one of them will be selling the thing unlocked, or at least offering very a simple unlocking procedure. If this is the case, wouldn't it be much simpler for Apple to just sell the thing unlocked from the UK store and for buyers to just get whatever package they want from whichever carrier they want?

This is what I want anyway!!

Three do have the best 3g coverage but the worst customer service. I tried to get the iPad 3g 15gig plan and was on the phone for 2 hrs. Could not be done, had to go with o2

It never ceases to amaze me the reasons why people call customer services, when can I preorder?, can I preorder now before the 15th?, how much is it going to cost?, when all the available info is on their website, why on earth were you calling 3 for your microsim when they have the easiest form on their website to fill in and then send you the sim for free?

but wooohooo for 3 mobile getting it never been dissatisfied with their service, never had problems with their network and I have been across the country with them, and cannot even think of a reason why I would even need to call their customer service other to request a PAC

I hadn't heard of Simplicity until I saw this thread. Looking at the upgrade links, I decided to see what kind of deal it was. As a test on the upgrade page, I chose an iPhone 3GS and "Simplicity For iPhone" tariff. I wanted to see how much O2 then expect on top of that for the phone, as I'm hoping the new iPhone will be similar. But when I tried this, it said that the tariff I had chosen was not compatible with the phone I had chosen. So, if the "Simplicity For iPhone" tariff isn't for the iPhone, what the hell is it for?

My other question: What's the catch? The Simplicity tariffs seem to get you the same thing as the normal iPhone tariffs. Same calls, texts and data. Same price for the handset. But it's cheaper each month. What's the catch?

No catch. I pay £20pm for the same deal as my original £35. (i think its £25 now, but I got in before it was officially announced)

Aaaha, but you can't order the phone as a pay monthly phone with Simplicity for iPhone. You buy a PAYG iPhone and a Simplicity SIM (or move from an iPhone contract onto Simplicity once you are out of your minimum term).

So its PAYG cost + (18*Simplicity tariff monthly cost) for a price comparison.

nothing, it's cheaper because you dont get a phone with it. you have to buy a payandgo iphone and then buy the simonly plan, you cannot get a paymonthly phone on a simonly plan without getting it on the paymonthly plan aswell

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 3_1_3 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/528.18 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0 Mobile/7E18 Safari/528.16)

Peter - there's no catch. It's a sim only deal - you need the iPhone. On contract you get a subsidised iPhone

The catch is that its only the sim. the idea is you get ur own phone and then get a great tarrif deal to go with it Sim-plicity i.e sim only

The other tarrifs come with an iphone which is why they cost more and have less mins. tho if u watch on quidco and topcashcask then usually offer a good deal to take simplicity on a 12month contact. I got £200 cash from it. just sign up and 8 weeks later its in your account. using that to buy the iPhone 4 along with the money i get selling my 3GS

You still have to phone them to register the sim after you get it.

They do have the worst customer service of any company I have dealt with. I shouldn't have to phone customer service but the have so many issues, which included giving me a SIM card which was registered to to another customers account and losing my number when I tried to Port it over to them.

Why would it mean that. They have reduced the prices to clear the 3GS models. There is only an 8GB 3GS which is going to exist when the iPhone 4 comes out so they need to get rid of the 16GB and 32GB phones. The 16GB has stayed the same price, they probably have less of them to clear.

There was never an 8GB 3GS.... They always keep the largest size in stock.

Add me to the list who would not use 3, however cheap they appear to be.

Customer Service is simply unacceptable to me. I'd rather pay more for better service.

My own sources are hinting at 600 :/

600 pounds!! I hope not, a simfree nokia N8 is slated for only £320, but I would only by the 16GB iphone as past research says that they loose less money respectivly compared to the 32GB version.

I hope that you are right but they seem to have left it a bit late to start clearing stock. Everyone (especially Apple) knew that iPhone 4 was imminent.

No-one in their right mind will buy a 32GB 3GS for £499 if the iPhone 4 is just £50 more.
