"Dear xxxx,

We are pleased to send you this dispatch regarding your Apple Store order xxxxx

Your Delivery Reference Number is xxxx.
We expect your order to be delivered to your shipping address on or before 07.09.2010."

My estimated delivery date was 22nd September and I got the email about 15 minutes ago. :)

Oh crap! I was so happy to have unexpectantly picked up an iPhone 4 from an Apple Store last week that I forgot to cancel my online order, and I just got a dispatch notification from Apple. two iPhones :D  lol

Tescos getting any better?

So, now that the prox sensor thingy seems to be down to tolerable limits, I'm ready to upgrade my 3G.

I'm planning on going down the Tesco route mainly for the 12 month contract (iP5?)

Initially Tesco seemed way off the pace for stock. I can't seem to find out whether it's getting any better - in stock/out of stock doesn't give any clues as to a trend ;-)

Anyone got any experience of whether the lines are getting longer or shorter, what the delays are/will be?

I'm a looong way from a Tesco phone shop so can't pop-in to try my luck on a morning!

Cheers

Hah have fun waiting, I gave up and went sim only vodafone 12m contract. Tesco took too long and I got soo annoyed with ringing them every day, both the online store and closest physical store never had stock or if they do only like 5 phones at a time!

I got my iPhone today! Tired of Central London queues and Tesco having no stock. I decided enough was enough and so I found the 4 closest Tesco phone shops to where I live (Tooting/Earlsfield) and phone each of them on Friday. All had no stock, however 2 - New Malden (South West London) told me they would be getting in 5 phones Monday 9:30am and Purley (South East London) told me they would be getting 32 phones in Sunday morning. After a few hours I called all the stores again to see what they said regarding stock (if it would be the same story!). Same situation except someone at Purley said they would be getting in 30 Sunday morning. They also seemed the most confident in actually knowing/feeling they were getting stock by their tone.

I decided to take the risk and go to Purley this morning (I could always go to New Malden as a backup on Monday), and so I was at the store by 8:45am even though it didn't open until 10am. When I got there, there were about 7 other people - and you could tell they were all waiting for iphones. A few minutes before the store opened up - a few other people arrived and jumped to the front of the orderly queue that had been made and then an argument broke out with the people at the front telling them to join the back. They claimed that since Tesco made them wait 5hrs the day before - they were justified getting first dibbs! How rude!!!

Anyhows 9:30 the doors open and for some reason there is a mad rush to the phone shop on the second level. You know how they have the 2 gradually sloping travelators to go up - well people were running up the down one - thats how crazy it was! So much for everyone walking in a nice calm manner! Luckily I found myself fifth in the queue once at the phone shop - yay! The guy working the counter informed everyone that they had 16 16GB and 16 32GB. I had initially taken the wrong card to make the payment (yeah i know!) so they kept it for me until I went and brought the correct card. When I returned early afternoon - the queue had gone and they still had 4 32GBs in stock. I walked out of the store 30mins later with my new 32GB.

To be honest I never expected to find a queue for the phones at Tescos! I thought I had put Regent Street behind me! But given that Tesco do the cheapest contract, I guess it will be hard to find any unless you just happen to turn up by luck - like the dude behind me when I returned. He was just in the store doing the sunday food shopping and came up and managed to get 1 of 5 32Gbs still available without ever having to queue up or go through what I had to, earlier in the day.

The guy at the counter told me that if you have a fault - you cannot take it to Apple as they wont help us. I found this rather conflicting. He told me that if I have any problems with the phone - to bring it to the shop. If they ever get new stock in and a customer has phoned in requesting an exchange, they first take those phones aside before offering whatever remains, for sale to new customers. This is a good thing but is he seriously saying that Apple/Genius bar only deal with official unlocked phones bought from Apple retail and nobody on PAYG or contract has ever gotten served? I find that strange.

TL;DR: Phoned Tescos, told me Sunday they have stock in - went and promptly got my phone.

Oh and tonight a friend is standing outside Apple store Regent Street. He went there at midnight so i'll do a follow up report on the status of that when I hear from him Monday afternoon.

I found that most of Scotland were out but the NE of England had stock.
BTW I gave up phoning their number from a land line, they just ignore it. I was on hold for 60+ minutes. When I called back from the free mobile number (4455) they answered instantly.

I got my iPhone today! </snip>

what a great adventure :)

how comes there was no staff to actually ensure that the order your queued up outside was the order you got served inside? instead of all this running up travelators (gladiators tv show style!)?

anyway, regarding the warranty - it's an APPLE product, so of course, it's covered for 12 months by the manufacturer (ie, apple :))

enjoy your phone :)

What's the PAYG situation like at the moment?

Do any of the network stores in the high street actually have them in stock? The Orange/Voda/O2 sites say 'out of stock' or they just estimate a delivery date so I'm assuming they're still scarce?

Thanks in advance.

Well apparently mine is out for delivery today been up waiting since the crack of dawn but to no avail as of yet. Don't you just love courier companies sometimes! :)

Couple of questions for Three users (apologies if these are answered further back in this thread);

- What's the trick to getting the ridiculous adult internet filter lifted without being charged £5?

- Does anyone have the impression emails aren't always pushed to the the phone as they should be? I have mobile me and exchange email accounts which both pushed instantly to my iphone when I was with O2 but on Three I quite often seem to get messages that appear when i manually check my email that haven't been pushed through.

Cheers

yes that is 100% right and is technically the law, as the warranty is only valid from the place where you bought the item, that goes for all phones (if your nokia breaks from o2 you take it back to o2 not nokia), all electronics, all clothes (you dont send a Ben Sherman jacket back to Ben Sherman when you bought it from Debenhams do you?), even all food, so exactly the same for iphones regardless if it has an from apple logo on it or not

Basically apple has zero resposability for anything that wasn't bought direct from them, and is only from the kindness of their unibody heart that they have ever replaced or fixed anything not bought from them.

Wicker, thanks for the info. :)

I am currently on T-Mobile and they have free tethering but may be moving to Three if the coverage where I live/work is better!

3 mobile share t mobiles 3G masts so if you get a t-mobile 3G signal you should definately get a 3 mobile 3G signal even if there isnt a 3 mobile mast there.

if you are on contract you can ring them up and ask them to switch you from the internet max add on to x series silver internet add on. both cost £5 and both come with 1GB internet so you don't pay any extra.

if you are on contract OR PAYG you can just call them up and use a credit card to prove you are over 18 and they will remove the restrictions (this may only remove their own adult content and not the whole internet adult content), they take a charge of either 1p or £1 and it gets refunded back to you anyway (so if you are already paying your contract with a credit card then it should be an easy call)

also paying for an internet add on my stop it which if you are on PAYG you would be saving money doing that rather than paying 30p per MB

or you can always just use opera browser as that doesnt get filtered.

EDIT or just create a new APN. Make sure all the settings on it are the same as the 3 one, except change the APN from three.co.uk to 3internet (this is if you can create an new APN on the iphone) but this method definately works

Do both internet use on the phone, and tethering use come out of the same 1GB? And if so can you pay for a larger limit?
(I'm currently on contract with Orange, but am looking at the 3 sim only plans for when my contract finishes).

Also on a related note, does anyone have any idea how the T mobile / Orange merger will affect 3 coverage?

yes they both come from the same limit (3 has the view of you've paid for 1GB of internet you can use it for anything you want)

i'm not sure about contract sims or sim only but on PAYG you just pay another £5 and that gives you another 1GB, I think it is exactly the same if your simonly plan doesnt come with an internet add on, but I'm not 100% sure, It would be better if you ask 3 mobile (I'd do it in a store rather on the phone)

as for the orange t mobile merger there has been agreements set up to protect 3 mobile (because they are smaller than the other networks) so you will be able to roam on tmobiles 3G and on oranges 2G exactly the same as ever. so the coverage will stay the same but it also might get better (because the agreement might alow 3 mobile onto oranges 3G masts in the future).

Am sure the APN settings were in Settings/General/Network/Cellular Data
BUT I haven't got the "Cellular Data" option ... the 3 carrier settings update (from iTunes) must have hidden them!! bah....
